It is 4am over here now.

I have a wellness exam for both boys at the vet next week. I noticed yesterday that Gizmo has a bruise on his left front hand. He does not overgroom this area and does not seem to be uncomfortable. It is not red or swollen. And it is not an open wound. I also noticed last night that he did not want to eat his food, veg or fruit. He will however eat mealies, and yoghurt. He does not seem to poo a lot, and his poo is litlle tiny pieces that comes out. Usually he eats very well, and does not have problems with his size or texture of poo.

why could his poo be like this, and why wouldn't he eat? He has been on this diet for a long time now.

From your description of his feces, it sounds like he may be running a bit constipated. Has anything about his food changed at all in the past few days? Are the temperatures much warmer all of a sudden? Try to think of any and all changes that may have occurred in his environment within the past few days to determine if that may be having an effect on his appetite. Also, check the water bottle to make sure it is dispensing the water properly.

It is a bit warmer here now, the water bottle is fine, I did give him some prunes to help with his tummy and also acasia gum. He does not hiss while going to the loo, and is active as well. I took out the wheel for his hand, but I don't think this is the problem. He is not dehydrated I did the tent test. Can this be stress related as I am introducing our other boy to him. But their cages has been next to each other for almost 3 months now, the only thing that changed is that we got a new cage set but he plays on and around it. No tail lifting at all. I also received yoghurt drops from the US 2 days ago and he had some of those, that is all that is new to his diet.

My concern is what might be going on with his hand. You mentioned earlier that it was swollen. Does it look ok now?
It sounds like your following everything as Suz suggested. I would continue with the yogurt and make sure that he is getting plenty of fluids.
If things do not change by tomorrow, see if you can get him into see the vet sooner than next week.

The swelling has gone down and there is no redness. He runs and uses his hand as normal.

I think I will be taking him to the vet in the morning. It will be a 3 hour drive. I don't know, maybe I should just take him.

What can I ask the vet to check for? She is a good exotic vet but only sees about 3 gliders in a year. She is the best we have in South Africa.

Behind every symptom there is a problem. If your not certain as to what the cause was for the swelling, and now with his change in eating habits in addition to having constipation I feel that your making the right decision by taking him in for a check up.
Provide your vet with a list of what your feeding.
Weight (if you have previous weights those will help)
Check skin, eyes, ears, nose, mouth.
Urinalysis and fecal float/smear will help with determining if there is an infection going on somewhere.
If I think of anything else I will let you know.
My prayers are with your little fella. hug2

Just a quick update on behalf of Gizmogirl:

She took Gizmo to the vet where they did all sorts of tests (blood, etc). Shame the little baby had to get anesthetics.

The vet is not too concerned about his hand though.

Gizmo does run a fever and hopefully the blood test results will reveal all. Remember that he did not eat for 2 days.

Please keep him with us in your prayers.

Again on behalf of Gizmogirl who is on her way back from the vet right now.

Diagnosis does not look too good. :-(

She will update you all tonight on her return. However, in short, either cancer or infection. Only time will tell. PLEASE keep Gizmo in your prayers!!!

Thank you for all the prayers for my precious little boy. He is my world. Please keep praying. He needs it.

I just got home, my poor boy had so much stress today. We travelled 600km. When we arrived at the vet I told her that Gizzie does not want to eat and that he hurt his foot. She looked at the foot and told me that it is minor and nothing to worry about. She could not get a stool sample as my little one's tummy was too empty. She decided to give him anaesthetics in order to perform a thorough examination. She told me there is no obstruction, actually his little tummy is so empty, although I managed to give him some youghurt and a grape this morning before leaving for the vet.

His eyes, ears, fur, teeth, gums and nose were all in order. She took his temperature and said that he had fever and that she needed to draw some blood. I witnessed all these things and it was so traumatic to see my baby like that. They told me to wait for the results of the blood tests. She gave Gizzie a fluid injection under the skin. My vet was so great throughout the entire ordeal. Really caring with Gizzie.

Boesman also had his wellness checks at the same time and they said he was doing just fine. His fecal smear was clean.

About an hour later she came to me with the results. I never expected these results as Gizzie was so alert and active, even at the vet. She did a full blood count (haematology). I received a copy of the results. I may be wrong by saying this as my head is spinning after today's events, but the AbNmat is too low (1.36) and the AbLympho is higher than it should be (9.43). If I understand this correctly, it can be an indication of a most-likely Viral infection and the rare possibility of Hepatic enzyme induction or Biliary Cystadenoma or Leukameia or Aflatoxicosis or Lymphosarcoma.

What a shock!!! My poor baby.

She decided to treat him for the Viral infection. She prescribed Ciprobay and an Immune booster. She explained to me that in the US it is possible to conduct multiple tests by using one drop of blood. However in South Africa this is not the case and vast amounts of blood would be needed to perform the same tests. She mentioned that there were several tests that she wanted to do but at this stage it would cause Gizzie just too much stress.

One positive point to mention is that Gizzie gained approximately 10 grams since his last wellness check, 3 months ago.

I must syringe force feed him (water and food) until he gets better. So after little Gizzie's 15 hour ordeal, I still have to bother him with medication and force feeding.

Please pray for my beautiful boy, I am so scared.

If there is anyone that want to take a look at the blood report you are welcome to PM me.

At the moment little Gizzie is in my bra and is content.

Liezl

Liezel, I would like to suggest that you have your vet do a consultation with one of the vets here in the US to get their opinion of the results.
Here is a link to veterinarians that are more than willing to do phone consults.
Vet Consultants
If your vet is unwilling to do a consult, you could send srlb (Peggy) a PM asking if she could pass this information on to Dr. Tristan.

My impression is that your vet gave you all the 'Possibilities' as to what could be wrong, rather than what is wrong. I wouldn't get stressed so early without having a 'conclusive' diagnosis.

Regardless, I understand how emotionally draining this is, but please try to not stress too much, otherwise this will have an emotional impact on Giz.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and Giz.

Thank you for the reply.

I think I should leave the computer now and concentrate on the needs of Gizmo. Tomorrow is another day and will be better. Peggy and Dr Tristan helped a lot during Gizmo's deep sleep occurences. I will forward the mails to her tomorrow. Perhaps the blood test results can provide some insight into Gizmo's deep sleep occurences. Maybe, I don't know...

Update on Giz

At 21:30 he had 2ml food mixed fruit and veg relish and Booster x 1 drop
At 22:50 he had 5ml food mixed fruit and veg relish, 2 wurms, made a wee and a poo
Then he had his antibiotics. He was quiet for about up to one in the morning, he had a go at his wheel, and then ate some(about 20ml) all by himself. I am so proud of him.

This morning he had one yoghurt drop, about 2ml activia yoghurt.
At 8:00 he had 1ml apple juice mixed with water.
At 9:00 turned his head away.
10:00 - one mealworm
11:00 - turned his head away
12:00 2 pieces of apple
14:00 forced 3ml food mixed fruit and veg relish and 1ml apple juice mixed with water

He seems to be doing a bit better, but is shivering all the time.

I'm glad to hear that he's eating and looking better! The shivering should lessen once his body temperature begins to regulate. When gliders are sick they are unable to regulate, so make sure that he is kept warm as much as possible.
Keeping little Giz in my prayers. hug2

Spoke to the vet just now and she is happy with what he is taking in at this stage. She says the shivering is from the fever, and the medication should fix that within the next 2 days.

thumb That's good to hear. I'm happy to hear that your vet is pleased with his progress so far. Your doing a fantastic job! Giz is one lucky little fella to have such a loving and caring mommy! hug2

Thank you LSardou, I needed some words of encouragement! Giz doesn't want to be alone or in his cage, just with mom, then he purrs all the time. His eyes are still half open I can see he is really tired. His fur is also mutted. I can also see that he is teaming up on getting better!
