Hi all I have a question. I know that we are not suppose to give canned fruits or veggies to the gliders but I was wondering if you could use them if you canned them yourself. When canning I use glass jars not cans. I can also regulate the amount of syrup that would go on them. I would like to can some peaches and pears and would love to be able to give these to my gliders as fruits get kinda scarce in the winter here. Anyone know if this would be safe or dangerous?

You should be able to can your own fruit (in jars) by canning in their own juice.

There are several concerns about "canned" foods. Mainly, Salts, Sugars and preservatives. Also, most cans are made out of tin and the metals can leach into the foods.

I know in times gone past (way back when) we canned some peaches and pears using 100% pineapple juice combined with the fruit (peach or pear) juice as a preservative. Not much, just enough so the citric acid would keep them from turning brown. We used no sugar at all and the fruit was delicious!

I suppose you would be perfectly safe doing it this way.

I have considered canning food for my gliders, but I lack the know how Honestly, I think it's one of the best feeding options out there, if you can do it. That way you'll know exactly what your gliders are getting and you don't have to worry about fruits being out of season...

I'm still new, but I wouldn't suggest canning foods. My suggestion would be to buy the frozen fruits and veggies when the fresh produce is slim. Hope this helps
