I have come across a Ca:pH ratio list for greens. I also found a limited list that contains some fruits and such (it even contains ratios on bugs). If anyone is interested, let me know.

Why don't you go ahead and post it? I know there are other lists out there, but yours may have something on it that others don't. I would love to see it

I agree with Alicia, go ahead and post it, those things always wind up helpful to us glider owners!!

Something glider owners need to keep in mind when trying to pick from these charts is that they do not tell you how much of the items listed will be utilized by the body. Unless you do extensive research on this you can create a very unsatisfactory diet. The amount of calcium in a food product is not always absorbed because of other minerals in the food. Same goes for the amount of protein. Just because a food item has a certain percent of protein does not necessarily mean that it is useable protein.

I apoligize for straying from your original post but feel this is something that should be pointed out. Food charts can be very deceptive for the amateur dietician.

[:"purple"] To add to what Charlie had to say, oxalic acid(oxalate) inhibits the absorption of calcium and foods with high concentrations should be avoided. You will note in the first chart that some of the high calcium greens are also very high in oxalates. I have never seen(or looked for) any figures showing the net calcium available in high oxalate greens; but am guessing the reduced availability is significant. This is just one more example of why glider nutrition and diets is so complicated. You can't just run into the kitchen, throw together a few components and come up with a healthy and nutritious diet. This post is in no way intended to discourage people from experimenting and trying to improve diets. Just be sure you know a little about what you are doing before you start fooling around. Creating a good diet is more complicated than it looks!!!

BTW, the correct chemical symbol for phosphorus is the letter "P", not "Ph". We are discussing the Ca:P ratio. [/]

Thanks for the science lesson, chemistry is one class I have yet to take. I was not intending to suggest or not to suggest anything from these lists. Just something I found and thought others might be interested in. However,I do appreciate the input about the oxalates. My gliders have been on the same diet for 5 years and are doing exceptionally well. I realize that 5 years still makes me an amature and I am not in anyway a chemist. This is why I hesitated about posting the lists. Sorry if I errored in posting them.:(

You did good by posting the lists! In no way are we critizing you for it. We just want glider owners to look at all of the values on any given item and realize how they interact with one another. There is probably no danger substituting one or two items in a diet from time to time. And the tables can be very useful for this.

Thanks a ton for posting those. I will print them out and put them with the others I have. There were some on your lists not on my own so for that I thank you.

Please dont take what these two said as anything negative, they are just trying to make sure people are away of all areas, it is just that when they start talking all that scientific mumbo jumbo, some of us get confused or think we are being slammed. I really dont believe either of these two meant any harm.

(however, I have always put CA:PH instead of CA:P, and its ok because everyone here knows what Im talking about! Im glad Im not taking a test in abbreviations!! )

[:"magenta"] dancing, in the few months i have been registered here, i have learned many things. one of those things is to try not to be too sensitive. i know sometimes it seems like people are being critical, but try not to let it bother you. i have gotten my feelings hurt on this board quite a few times. but if i quit, i miss out on the opportunity to help people out and to ask for help when i need it. i miss out on the chance to learn from others, to teach others, to ask and answer questions, etc. i am glad you posted the list, and i am sure many members will find it helpful. i just wanted to let ya know you are welcome here, so don't feel bad about posting, ok? [/]
