Non Joey Bonding?

Non Joey Bonding? - 04/12/19 04:24 PM

Hi guys, first post and three days into my suggie journey with a lovely little mosaic girl I've named Roo. I had a choice between her (9 mos oop) or a 10 week old. I love her personality, so I picked her from a private breeder. I'll add another so she doesn't get lonely later (no hating just want to focus on one at a time, but I digress). So far, the pros to getting a non baby I've noticed are: She doesn't crab in her cage at all, or when I picked her pouch out this morning for bonding (currently my hand is attached to her and she actually wakes up and grooms me, then goes back to dreaming... presently licking my thumb). She has also taken an interest in my two cats, and barks at them from her cage (no crabbing, assuming its just to get their attention since they go nose to nose through the cage and she eats fine around them). She readily takes treats from my hands directly, and I know all these are amazing for having known each other 3 days, but there's one thing I want advice on.

((TLDR;)) The only thing we're struggling with (trust is kind of a factor but I also think her age might play into the new environment deal) is not wanting to come out of the pouch/cage, or avoiding my hand/me like the plague if she tries to venture out. What's the best way to work around this, and is it better in practice at night or when shes sleepy?

I recommend tent time if you are not doing it already at night. I use a mosquito net tent so my gliders can crawl all along the inside. If she is focused on your hand she might be nervous. Gliders tend to focus on one thing at a time so if they are distracted they are more likely to get comfortable with your hand. If she is playing she is more likely to jump all over you without noticing. Preferably hang some toys in the tent and hold still until she is comfortable with you. I found after about a week my gliders were eager to play. If they are climbing on the walls and I put my arm out to them they often jump or climb right on.

Until you get another glider I would also make sure she has several small fleece blankets to snuggle with while sleeping.

I would bond more at night. Gliders are much more hesitant in light. Mine almost never come out of the pouch if the light is on. I use red light so they can be active and I can see. The only stuff I do during the day is time in the bonding pouch or putting my hand in with them in the sleeping pouch and nail trimming (which is fortunately rare, the toys I have given them seem to keep them pretty trim.

I would also recommend getting the next glider soon. While I appreciate wanting to bond first in my limited experience introducing gliders pushes back their bonding with you a bit because they are bonding with each other. I had to rewind several weeks when I finally got my boys and girls together and they all got more pouch protective.

Thanks Xeno! I appreciate the tidbits about the lights and the time of day. She actually decided to jump all over us last night, I never expected her to be that comfortable within less than a week.

Hi Feather, I tried registering yesterday but it didn't go through(?) Maybe a browser issue with chrome or because I'm on my phone?

Try registering again. This time send me your information through the Contact System at the bottom of the page in order that I may watch for it in the registration que. Let me know if you got any kind of message when you tried to register yesterday.

I got my my two sisters about three weeks after I got the brothers. I tried a quick intro rather ignorantly and they balled up.

For introductions my story is on this thread: http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/1419395/1

Since then I only had problems one day when Dobby and Arwen had a dominance face off but they resolved it in one night and were sleeping together the next day.
