[:"green"]Fruits should be limited due to the high sugar content. There needs to be a balance of veggies & protein in addition to the BML or the ratios get out of balance. Some other options for proteins beyond the standard insects are: parboiled chicken (plain), unseasoned scrambled eggs, hardboiled eggs, tuna packed in water, salmon in water, etc.

I thought BML covered their protein, Suz? The egg and the babyfood chicken? Am I wrong?

You are right Paula. I haven't fed insects of any kind in over 6 years now and mine are on BML and always have been.

Thanks Ellen. That's a huge relief. I thought I'd heard that from Bourbon but wanted to double check.

I tried feeding the meal worms but I just truly didn't have it in me.

Paula, I use tweezers for mealies, I know alot of people do. Not because I'm squimish about bugs but got pit bull bit too many times when my guys would try to get mealie n miss and get my fingers instead lol. Its just a thought

I thought it said that along with the BML diet there needs to be fruits, veggies, AND insects for the diet to be well balances... am I wrong on this?

"As for insects, the insects should always be part of their diet. Depending on what you feed, and what size. I feed 3-4 Large (jumbo) mealies per day (not superworms) small 8-10, medium 5-7, Large or jumbo 3-4, superworms 1-2. Some of the most popular insects are . Mealworms, crickets, moths, june bugs. Do NOT feed roaches, or any insects found on the floor or on the ground, which could have come in contact with pesticides, either from your place, or someone elses. My gliders do not like to have their mealies in the BML mix. I offer 4 to 5 mealworms or crickets each morning. I may also offer them a few in the evening or offer them moths, june bugs or Man'o'wars. If it is a bug.. Look out... If it moves, try it. In the summer the fav is man'o wars or skeeter eaters.. whichever people call them they look like giant mesquitos, moths and june bugs."

Heres the link where I got my info from...

this is the BML diet plan that Bourbon came up with

Yes, Cheetah, I thought the same thing at one point, but after bringing it up I found that apparently feeding BML without additional protein sources is actually accepted and a common practice observed by a few here on the boards.

that's such a relief.. cuz i'm really not into insects..but i also give my glider additional hard boil egg with the BML for extra protein.. i hope that will do..

[:"green"]FemaleCheetah, I was under the same impression. Mikey, thanks for clarifying that one. Since I just started using the BML diet recently, it's still new to me, so I was "going by the book", so to speak!

Bourbon did state a couple of years ago that there is sufficient protein in the bml mix and and added protein source was not necessary.

"If it is a bug.. Look out... If it moves, try it."

FemaleCheetah, you quoted this from someone but I would be very careful listening to that advice. Mikey Bustos just put out a list of TOXIC INSECTS and it was a long one.

Please don't take this as I'm telling you that your wrong. I just want you to be aware.

Re: not feeding live insects - 03/26/06 06:33 PM

I quoted this from Bourbon herself from her recipe... its the same one I find everywhere. Anywas, I believe it meant that if its from the ground our outside do not feed them because they could have pesticides on them but I think it meant that if u can buy them or whatever I dunno but I already read the toxic bug list and I already know not to feed outdoor insects or insects that I "find" in my house to my gliders.

I figured that you knew better since you're on here alot. I sure hope that I didn't offend you in any way.

I'm sure that it will be good info for any new glider owners that haven't researched much. I was one of THEMMMMMM.

Feeding tuna was mentioned earlier..wondering how much would be good. maybe 1 tsp? I feed the BML also, but think it would be a nice treat.

Re: not feeding live insects - 03/30/06 05:51 PM

But insects have all long been part of the sugar gliders diet especially those in the wild, tho i believe the BML diet and other recipes and food has adequate protein in it. i like insects too (definately not flies and mosquitoes ) but i just believe its part of nature's way that the insects end up as the gliders diet, just like other predators that rely on their prey for food or suppliment.tuna? gliders eat fish too? but i was wondering, how can i get my gliders to eat boiled chicken or turkey? i left some in their cage, but they wld not touch them, i chopped them up n mixed with honey, but they only suck the juices and left the turkey spits.
