OMG Please check your Gliderade!!!

OMG Please check your Gliderade!!! - 09/27/06 04:22 AM

I just finished making my glider`s plates and decided to sprinkle some gliderade on it and as I was sprinkling, I noticed something hanging from my finger. I didn`t think too much of it, though maybe a hair got in there so I washed it off and pinched some more to sprinkle and the same thing happened! So I got right under the light and looked closely and it looked all spider webby-like all on the top layer of powder! I was so disgusted I dumped out their plates and made them new ones, didn`t want to take any chances with it but I did snap some pics of it and that`s when I noticed some tiny brownish colored spots too, not sure if thos are normal in there or not. Hopefully attaching pics is the same now that GC has changed a bit.

Re: OMG Please check your Gliderade!!! - 09/27/06 04:29 AM

I forgot to mention that I keep the jar shut tightly, there`s no way possible anything could get in. I`m completely stumped over this! I wonder if I`ve used it like this and never saw it. I usually will measure some out and mix with water for them to drink, I seldomly ever sprinkle it over their food. Has anyone else had this problem? Did I get a bad batch or what????

Hmmmm...I've never had this happen. It should be stored it the freezer. Is that where you had it??

Re: OMG Please check your Gliderade!!! - 09/27/06 04:55 AM

I don`t think a powder should be stored in the freezer. Everytime you open the jar, a little bit of moisture will get in, the same way moisture condenses on the outside of a cold glass of water. Besides, the gliderade didn`t come with any storage instructions. I keep it tightly closed in the cupboard.

I wouldn't store it in the freezer. That is so weird. I have never seen this happen before. Maybe you got a bad batch. Sometimes you can get bugs in the food you order. I've accidently ate a spider that was in with my grapes before. crazy Everytime I think of it I feel sick. I've had maggots in my ferret litter. I would tell the company you bought it from and I wouldn't feed it to my suggies. Good luck! smile

I keep mine stored in the fridge. I have had my current bottle for a year or so and have not seen ANYTHING like that in mine jar.

THanks for bringing that to people's attention though. If you order another jar I would store in the fridge though. thumb

Sounds like meal worms. Just put it in your fridge, so they don't hatch into moths. They won't hurt your gliders.

I would store it in the fridge from now on if I were you. I feed Pricilla's diet, and I use the complete glider multivitamin that she sells. It says to keep it stored in the fridge after you open it, so I think it would be fine if you do the same with the glideraide.

crazy Ewww.. that doesn't look good at all. I would contact the company you ordered it from to let them know that there was something foreign in it.

I'm sure that it is produced in huge quantities and packaged in a wear house and from time to time things get in that are not supposed to tounge

That is just the strangest thing… ooo and yuck I might add…

Re: OMG Please check your Gliderade!!! - 09/27/06 06:33 PM

Eeewwwww I`m still grossed out by it! I have no intentions on feeding this to my gliders and I`m going to contact the person I bought it from. I haven`t even had this jar very long at all and it`s still almost a full jar upset My gliders are worth the money I spent on it but not when I don`t get to use the stuff.

I agree though, it almost looks like the webbing from moths but how could anything do this in a sealed tight container?

OK, when I get another bottle, it will be stored in the fridge like you all said to do. I`m assuming that it`s been successful and it hasn`t gone bad on all of you who do this. I really thought condensation would ruin it from opening and closing it all the time.

Just make sure you check your jars from now on, now that we know what strange things can grow in there roflmao

Re: OMG Please check your Gliderade!!! - 09/27/06 07:52 PM

That is definitely odd. I buy the 2lb jars from both Brisky and Exotic Nutrition twice a year (I mix it together), and keep it in a cool cupboard with tight lid for about 6 mos...but have never seen anything like that. I go straight thru those websites. I'd definitely return it and get some new...it shouldn't look like that. Perhaps some water or humidity got in before you got it, but I agree you shouldn't take chances..that's just downright strange. Thank you for the heads up. If you wouldn't mind...could I ask you to PM where yours came from...since I'm low and about to buy some more, I don't want to end up with the same thing. If you've fed out of that before, and your gliders are doing okay, then you probably don't need to worry, though..just don't feed more of it at this point. I'm sorry this happened to you. hug2

Jen, I sent you a PM. If you don`t get it, let me know, this is my first PM since GC has changed and it didn`t say that it was sent smile

Like everyone said, store it in the fridge. I work at a pet store and we get those web things in some of our products every once in a while. If you look closer you will probably find a few worms in there. I have seen this a ton of times and it is usually on the sweet things such as the dog biscuits with carob or the all natural tendon and pig ears.

They were in there when it was packaged. It will not hurt them. You can put it in the fridge and they will become dormant. It is the same with flour and such. The place it was packaged apparently had some get in. I don't blame you for being grossed out, but at least you don't have to worry about what you have fed them already being a problem. I would contact the place you got it from and let them know. And keep it in the fridge in the future.

Thanks for this info.

Osmo, you were SO right, I looked real closely and I saw something moving. It`s kind of like a small caterpillar, I`ll attach a pic of that too if you want to see what to look out for. I don`t think I saw it last night because it blended in so well with the powder.

I did contact the vendor about it, so hopefully I`ll hear from them soon. Looks like my suggies have to go without gliderade for a little while upset I don`t believe this is the vendor`s fault at all though, like you said, it was probably packaged that way.

Re: OMG Please check your Gliderade!!! - 09/28/06 01:36 AM

I'm sorry, but MY flour, cornmeal, etc. gets bugs in it and it goes in the trash. I've never had an issue storing gliderade at room temp-and SO glad that wasn't in mine I'd have totally gone ballistic! I don't put it in the fridge, because moisture in it will spoil it. Whether it'll hurt to eat them or not, crickets and mealworms are as far as I go, and they don't come in my gliderade, lol. Thanks for the pic (hope you don't mind if I don't look twice!) but it is informative...*shudder*

I also store mine at room temp. Mine is not in a jar, but a 'bag'. I got it from Exotic Nutrition. (I think it was the smaller one).

If it was meant to store in the fridge- wouldn't it say it on the packaging?

Re: OMG Please check your Gliderade!!! - 09/28/06 02:53 AM

LOL C`mon Jen, LOOK again roflmao Look again!

I contacted the vendor and it will be replaced but they informed me that I should store it in the freezer question No one else is having this problem though lol! Anyways, they said it looked like a pantry moth larvae ( I sent pics lol).

Mobmilli, I did make that statement too, there`s no storage instructions and it seems like everyone stores it differently dunno

How did I get to be the lucky one to get the bad batch LOL

Re: OMG Please check your Gliderade!!! - 09/28/06 04:11 AM

I buy 2 lbs bags of Gliderade from Exotic Nutrion...I've always stored it in the freezer, in it's bag, without any problems. It's always nice and fresh. thumb

I don't even remember who or where I was informed by to freeze it. I did a search, but couldn't even find it online. I know it was on good authority, though. (I don't listen to just anybody! smirk)I assumed it was stated on the package, but it's not. Maybe an older bag I had?

Denise, I'm glad the company is taking responsibility. clap Thank you for bringing this to our attention. thanks

I buy gliderade from Exotic Nutrition and I've yet to find a creepy crawly shock in it! *GAG crazy
I store it in a cool dry place and removed it from the plastic baggy it came in
to store it in a vacumed sealed container idea
I'll be checking one way or the other before mixing from now on that's for sure!
Thanks for the heads up hug2 and pics of what to look for!

Wow, interesting! So, this sounds like a new way to have a mealie farm, eh? Sweet-tasting mealies for your glider babies. tounge

A friend who is a nurse said to put things like Bisquik in the freezer to kill the eggs (apparently this is more common than we'd like to imagine). I don't do that, but I do keep my large bottles of vitamins, and my babies' Rep-Cal vitamins and calcium tightly closed and in the fridge after I open them.
