Splenda is the trade name for a synthetic compound called sucralose, comprised of two molecules of sucrose (sugar) and three molecules of chlorine. While some industry experts claim the molecule is similar to salt, other independent researchers say it has more in common with pesticides.

The manufacturer’s own short-term studies showed that Splenda, caused shrunken thymus glands and enlarged livers and kidneys in rodents.

Even though gliders are not rodents, they are similar in size so I imagine the effects could be/would be the same.

This all being said, this one time should not cause any harm but I would not feed it to them in the future and try to avoid all artificial sweeteners to be on the safe side.

Wow! The things that pass for "natural" are enough to kill us! UGH

yes- Splenda is very scary- it (sucralose in general) can cause Diahreah in humans... especially in large quantities among other issues, so personally I avoid it for the humans as well as the gliders..

Is it not amazing what is being passed of as better for us? I personally have severe reactions to asperthame (sweet n low) the most common of artificial sweetners in anything diet or "sugar free". The real stuff tastes better anyway!

There are many arguments over sweeteners. I just read a new article that aspartame is ok according to that big food organization in Europe, and that the rats they(those who said its dangerous) used before was sickly to begin with.

Now Im confused, but for me, I use it for moderation to play safe. For animals, due to many arguments, better not.

The thing is that it's great for Diabetics. BUT, can cause other health problems as if they don't have enough already. Catch 22.

[:"green"]Regardless of this new study, aspertame is still known to be a major Migraine trigger and is also known to be detrimental to people with ADHD and/or BiPolar Disorder... I can only imagine, then, that it's really not as "healthy" as they would lead us to believe...

True. I guess its all somewhere in the middle. Others want us to believe its THAT dangerous(just like people bashing BML), while others tend to exagerrate its safety.

With anything unnatural to a glider's diet, when in doubt, leave it out! Why risk it?
