They won't play during tent time

They won't play during tent time - 12/14/05 11:09 PM

I think this is a somewhat common problem, but it's a bit frustrating. Whenever we go in the tent (anywhere from 10 or 11 till midnight, usually), the gliders come out of the pouch, then go straight down my shirt. They sit there till we offer them their pouch again.

When we put them back in the cage, they immediately start playing. It's frustrating because I'd love them to play with us, but they just sit there. I can't figure out why!

We have all the lights off, and we wait till later in the evening in hopes they'll wake up.

Any suggestions? Could it be because they're not bonded with us yet? We've had them about 6 weeks, and they're almost 16 weeks OOP. They're really sweet and they never bite and rarely crab any more. They let us reach in their pouch and take them out without a peep.

Thanks in advance!! :

Try a few tent times where they're in there with lots of toys, and you're not. Just watch and talk to them from outside. See if that helps (it did for some of ours). I'd say it's because they're OVER bonded with you, rather than the other way 'round.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jen, I'll try it. I like it when they crawl down my shirt, but I never get to play with them.

My 3 started doing the same thing so now I glider proofed our small guest bedroom and go in there with them for playtime. I have a cardtable and chairs so I take the laptop in and they jump around on the toys, come back to check on me and then go play again. They love climbing the curtains and Stitch is actually learning to glide.

Well, my husband went in with them last night and I didn't, because I have a cold.

They were sooo active! It's kind of a bummer to me...I wanted to be in there, because I love playing with them.

So, Jen, what does this mean?!

Kristy, seems like I did a darned good job with these gliders when they were joeys, eh? LOL

How about if you take some of their toys from their cage into the tent with you? How about getting some mealworms with you into the tent and watch them have a such a special treat? Don't forget about licky treats, they love, love, love them! How about trying a feather-teaser? Gliders love to chase that around! How about getting a small bucket or something and stuff it with pieces of fleece and hide mealworms in there? Gliders are so much fun and it takes a bit of imagination to make it so much more fun.

I am so glad to hear that they are well-bonded to you and your husband. I am sooo glad that you have continued with scooping the gliders out of their pouch without a peep as I have been doing when they were younger. I am very happy knowing my babies have such wonderful parents like you and your husband.

Awww Jen it's great to hear from you!! Yes, you did an EXCELLENT job with these babies...they're just the sweetest things. Amy loves me, and Alistair loves my husband, so it works out well. You must have trained them to be bra babies, eh? They'll crawl down my shirt (especially Amy), and if I take my shirt off to get them to come out and play, they'll try to crawl down my bra!

Yep, we've continued scooping them out of the pouch, and now for the most part they don't even crab when we do it.

I'll try some of your suggestions...I like the bucket with mealies. They LOVE their mealies!

Oh yeah, I definitely trained them to be bra babies! That goes with the territory! I love feeling the soft furry cuties next to my bare skin.

I love hearing about how your gliders are doing. Of course I miss them but they belong with you and they are definitely happy with you.

If you need more ideas, then by all means give me a holler! Heh heh, there have been countless times when I have to take my shirt off just to get the gliders to come out and play.

IM or PM or email me so we can get in touch again. I enjoy our conversations!

I wouldn't say it's because they're not bonded to you, but TOO bonded, lol. Try this. The next few tent times...fill it with toys, put the gliders in (no pouch in tent), and watch from outside-don't get in with them. It worked with ours when they were losing interest. Try giving that a shot.
