Clipping their nails affecting our relationship..?

Clipping their nails affecting our relationship..? - 05/29/08 09:26 PM

I was clipping my girls' nails today, and Dakota, my little sweetie pie, crabbed at me. It has been the first time in a few months I she's crabbed at me. I clip their nails about every week to every other week, and she's never done that. She even tried to bite me, and that shocked me.

I was wondering if clipping their nails will affect our relationship.

I hold them in a pouch and bring out one of their paws, then clip their nails that way. I support the whole pouch so they're not supporting all of that weight with one of their limbs.
I have never brought the blood on either of them.

Is it just because they don't like feeling restrained like that? If it is affecting our bond, how else can I clip their nails myself?

No, it's not going to ruin your bond. Sometimes they just have off days and don't want to be bothered just like us. I clip my gliders nails once a week with no problems, however every once in awhile one or the other will be moody. In that case I always keep a little extra dish of mealies on hand as a calming agent... grin
You can also just sit and hold them to offer a little comfort after your finished.
I'm sure the next clipping session will go just fine.

I try to offer them mealies and yogies, but they just drop them. I take them and they chill for a while after they're done and I give them a yogie then, and they're fine afterwards.

That is the way my kids are too, not at all interested in treats during/after nail trims. Some of them really hate nail trims, but they still love me later. grin
If Dakota gets really upset you can also stop and try again later!

I probably should have waited a little while longer. Didn't think about that! worried
I'll be sure to do that next time if she starts acting up. thanks

I have one particular glider that's a challenge to trim his nails. I put a mealworm in his pouch to get his mind off the nail trimming. I do the Sugarglider Suz method and it has worked well. I try to divert their attention with treats in the pouch so they won't hate me! They are still bonded with me despite the nail trim sessions.

Nail trimming is such a traumatic experience (mostly for me, I think)! I try to trim a little bit every night before feeding mealies. Sometimes I am lucky and get a good once-over on all nails (usually with Keiko), but sometimes she'll be extra crabby and actually nip at me. It doesn't affect our bond at all. heart

Sometimes I count myself lucky and get one or two nails on my boys. Mealies are a great distraction, but they are so fast at wolfing them down, most of the time Hiroshi especially gets the better end of that deal.

You can definitely try different times of the day, especially while they're the sleepiest. And, unless it's critical and she's getting stuck, tomorrow's another day!

I HATE HATE HATE trimming nails. But one doesn't run on her stealth as much as the other so I had to clip hers the other day and she didn't bite me but she sure didn't like it. I barely (and I mean barely) even cut some and I could see small blood start to form (not trickle down just form) so it's kinda crazy how little you can cut them. It's very unlike dogs where you can see the blood vessel, so it's tough and tough on you because you feel like you're hurting them when they flinch after cutting frown

what is the best thing to trim their nails with? I saw some clippers on one of the stores websites that looked sort of like a pair of sissors but had a indentation to put their nail. Anyone know what I'm talking about? My female doesn't run as much on the wheel with the nail trimmer either, so her's are getting long and I tried regular nail clippers and I got no where with those.

I use baby nail clippers on all my suggies and even start my joeys at about 4 weeks OOP. I only do a few of the babies toes at a time, just to get them used to the feeling and keep them with some nails so they will stick to things when they start exploring. I love nail trim time. I come prepared with treats for everyone and they get 1 yoggie per foot, lol. They have no problems with it and happily sit munching away. I do it during the day when they are sleepy in their pouch and that way I can see them well in the light of day to check them over head to foot as well. Once in a while one will try and tug a foot away but I just hang on gently or if need be let it go and try again after doing someone else. They don't seem to mind at all and I think if anything it helps to make our bond stronger.

I rarely have to clip my gliders' claws, but when I do I just give them a bunch of mealies afterwards and they forgive me. wink

Those are called Lift-N-Snip scissors. I use them and love them. I hold a little hand or foot, slip the nail into the indention and literally, lift and snip. I make sure I gt the very tip of the nail and never have to worry about drawing blood. Here is a link to the scissors. They're less than $10 with shipping. http://www.123stitch.com/cgi-bin/itemdetail.pl?item=123-2081
