I'm moving

I know that when you bring a new glider home for the first time that you should leave them in the cage for a few days so they can get used to their new area. Well I am moving to a new apartment in about a month or so and I was wondering if you should do the same thing when you move or if it is ok just to play with them right away?

Thanks everyone!

This will depend on your glider. If your bonding is going well, it probably won't be too tough. But...you'll want to gauge that once you've moved. Get your glider settled as quickly as possible so the change is minimal. It's possible that they may need a day or two to acclimate, just pay close attention to how they're acting and if they seem nervous or scared, give them a few days to settle in but continue to talk with them and give them attention.

Thanks for the advice. Bonding is great. I have played with them for at least an hour almost every night for about a year now, but I will make sure to keep a closer eye on them for at least the first week.

Thanks again!

Awwwwww, that's a good thing. They might be a little slow moving for a day or two, just getting used to the new sights, sounds and smells....but if they're well bonded to you, then they should make the move pretty well. Please keep us updated as you go through your move and know that we're here if you have questions!

I had to make a trip to my uncle's house once. brought my baby with me for 2 nights. I slept on the floor, my face facing the cage right next to me. my baby was totally ok. I think they just need to know they are with you smile

I moved 1500 miles last year and the trip itself was stressful for the gliders so I didn't really bother them. But once we were settled in our new place, they were fine; like nothing happened.

i travel between my home town and college alot. I even bring mine to hotels with me when im on small trips.

They're so used to moving about it doesnt fase them at all anymore when we're in a new place, as long as i am there or my boyfriend. Even then they are very social with strangers now smile

I'm moving this weekend, finally lol and what i do whenever i travel or move i clean the cage out the weekend before i move, then that gives them a week to scent stuff, i change papers every weekend, but leave the fleece. Move them to the new place, leave the fleece in there to the next weekend or two, depending on stinky factor and if they seem ok. That way is always smells like home to them laugh

Covering three sides of their cage, especially initially, can help reduce their stress in the new apartment. They can get used to the smells and one part of the space first rather than seeing an entirely new space surrounding them with all the new smells, etc. For a couple of weeks, at night, you can also cover the front (all sides) of their cage so they don't even have to see the new environment and can just get used to the smells.

Whenever I travel with my gliders, covering their whole cage at night helps keep stress levels low.

That's a good idea Gretchen, I always have 3 sides of my cage covered anyway, but covering all sides with a move or on vacation is a great way to minimize stress....
