He likes to sleep in.... - 02/17/05 11:55 PM

Well, things have been going pretty good with my glider, which i have had for about 3 weeks. The only problem is that he doesn't wake up until very very late. about 12:30- 1 am. sometimes later. I have school early in the morning so its hard for me to stay up and wait for him to get up to play with him. what should I do? how can I make it so he gets up earlier?

Do you keep the light on in the room they are in? If you do you should try keeping it off when you want them to wake up, my gliders will not wake up until it is very late if I leave the light on.
How late do you feed them. My gliders usually wake up when I feed them.

My babies don't wake up till late, but gladly that means they stay up later. If your day begins early, and you have a glider proofed room, you could attempt to do morning play as I do.
I have read that changing their waking routine can be done, but at a slow pace. Say thirty minutes earlier every couple of days until their schedule matches your own. Could be hard because that means you would have to set alarms for an earlier time each night until their schedule is set. But if you want evening or night play to be earlier that is the only way I have heard to be successful.
Anyone else got a better suggestion?

Staplesmom, I agree with your whole post. I do morning play too. I get ready in the gliders' room, so they're out running around while I'm doing my make-up, hair, etc., getting my daughters ready for school and so forth.

Your explanation of moving wake up time earlier is exactly right from what I've heard, too.

Animalgirl, if your gliders are babies, they may be sleeping in just because of that. When Peepers was a baby, she never got up before midnight either, but as she grew up, she started waking up earlier on her own, without me consciously making an effort to get her up earlier. Just like baby people or baby puppies, little ones just need a lot of rest to do their growing.

My gliders are the same. they wake up at 12 and stay up untill 11 am.....I play with them in the morning, and I wake up at 12 to feed them thier insects by hand. I have found this is the easiest way to speed up the bonding process. Anyways don,t want to get off subject, but I would also try morning time play.

My little Kona was the same way. As she got older she got up a lot earlier. And then, with the seasons changing it was even better. Her and Chenzie would get up at 7-8...and that was with the light off. I have a red light in the fixture...and just a desk lamp at the computer for when doing school work. The red light lets them be more active and doesn't hurt their eyes as much (as I've been told). My 4 little ones now are young...2 get up around 10:30-11, then Jaya stagers out around 11, and then Jasmine usually around 12. Jasmine is the youngest (all between 10-16 weeks oop).

I feed my gliders when I get home from work at 5:00. They wake up around 8:00 pm and play until midnight. Then they take a little glider nap until 1:30 am and play until ????? They're only 12 weeks old and have been on that schedule since we've had them (4 weeks). I guess I'm pretty lucky :o) Jan

That is lucky that yours get up so early to play. I mean, its just that by the time i get home from school and work i start to get tired and want to sleep by the time he gets up, so its kinda difficult to spend lots of time with him. I have been kinda waking him up earlier, i didn't know if waking him up was a bad thing, because he gets a little upset and crabs for a while until finally calming down and climbing on me. the little picture under my name (to the left of the post) is of him

hey guys,
I have questions on letting my gliders run about freely in my room. I get up at 5 everyday and get ready and such and there still awake I would love to let them out in my room while im walkin about getting ready and such. But my gliders are not compleately bonded to me and im afraid they'll never go back to their cage... or maybe they'll get behind something and they wont come out. And if they wont come out before I leave .. would it be ok to just leave them loose in my room when I go to school and close the door with there cage open and hope they go back in there? Basically I just want to know how you guys let them loose in rooms and are your rooms just kinda empty so they dont get into things? please someone inform me on letting your gliders run free in your room :-D I would love to do this but i want them to be safe when i do! :-D
Thanx!

If you do...you may want to buy some of the trim that people secure to the bottom of their doors. Many people buy it who have ferrets. When I first got mine a few years back, Kona would always get out of the room and squeeze under the door. So, we got some extra of the ferret trim from my b/f's parents and installed it on the main door to the room, and the 4 little cloet doors. They never get in or out now. It's great.

Make sure you glider-proof your room if this is something you want to do - secure all your wires, get covers for any electrical outlets, remove anything that might be hazardous for the gliders to play on or chew. Remove anything that could be toppled over, especially if it would create a hazard or fall on top of the gliders.

Really, if you're going to be doing this in your bedroom, I'd rather see you put them back in a cage. There's just too many hazards that those curious little suggies can get into! To catch them again, just offer them their cage pouch - that's what I do. My kids usually crawl right back in.

I agree w/ Playingdecoy a/b really glider proofing your room if you want to let them out into it... I use my bathroom at our play place because it's easiest for me... a towel at the door and close the lid on the toilet... then it's safe for my guys...

I could never glider proof my room, too much stuff everywhere... lol

but if you try and get them to go back into the cage w/ a bribe, their pouch w/ some mealies, or their fave fruit, my guys always fall for the goodies and that's how I collect them when I think playtime's over (they never agree... lol)
