1 step forward 2 back - 04/28/05 03:12 PM

Okay so yesterday Princess let me pet her in her sleeping pouch for about an hour and I was so happy. Now today she is inside her strawberry and won't let me come anywhere near it. She is like a Guard Glider, lunging, biting and crabbing. It is like she goes in there so I can't bug her like I can when she is in the pouch. Should I take the strawberry out until we make more progress?

My suggestion is no. She crabbing cuz u guys have only done the petting thing once. They're not used to it yet. Its like a kid when u tell them to sit still, they may do it once but the second time they wont listen. say suck it up and get ur hand in there, she has to get used to you handling her =)
Lemme know how it goes.

taking the strawberry out actually might help. It is probably along the same lines of a nesting box, which some gliders can be more protective of, which at this point in your bonding with her, might make the process go backwards.

My little White face girl did the same thing to me. I'll be honest, that little girl had me scared to touch her. I had read that you have to let them bite you, and I tried, but I could not keep from jerking my hand back. I tried Mind over Matter...But I could not convince my hand to stay put. So after a while of wanting to grab her up and let her know I was not going to hurt her, I did what any good boss should do. Yep, that's right I yelled for my husband to come in with those big tough hands of his and let her bite him. Boy was I embarrassed!! She crabbed and lunged and tried to scare him off, but he didn't pay her any attention and reached right in and grabbed her out of her hut. She never even bit him!!!! She was bluffing all along. Now I have her number....I just shut my eyes and stick my hand right in there and she acts like she will make me draw back a numb but she never even nips. So get someone with fingers that are not scared and try it out. You will soon see she is all talk.

Oh no, I am so sorry. Well it sounds like she just needs time. Good Luck.

Yeah, you know that crabbing that says "I'm a billion feet tall and weight more than a milion tons and I'll eat you alive"? That is why Banshe won the name Banshee. She definately has that down and thinks it will work all the time. Enough so that she scared my son and got away from him on the last visit, but we finally caught her. It sounds so cute sometimes when she is just sitting there and nothing has changed and she starts making noise.

I agree that the strawberry might hinder your progress. I had to take the coconut out for a while with CiCi when she first came here. She would still crab like crazy in her pouch but I could take the pouch and gently turn it inside out to get her to come out. Once she was out she was ok but I was NOT going to stick my hand in the pouch just to get bitten. I still don't. Personally I feel they should have a safe place all their own. I still turn the pouch inside out with her (and really all my gliders) if she doesn't want to come out on her own (but mealies usually convinces her she does). I think by not intruding on her inside pouch space, it shows her I respect her feelings but by turning it inside out I am telling her even though I respect her space, I am still the boss. Usually now, all I have to do is push up on the bottom of the pouch and she will come right out.
