Play during Day, Sleep @ Night......

Play during Day, Sleep @ Night...... - 11/06/05 11:42 PM

I am desperate to have them switch their routine so i have an "experiment" Im trying. If anyone has done this let me know! since 7am this morning i've had them in my lap handling them and giving them treats to keep them awake. I've been doing this mean while in a room with the curtains closed so it appears like night. I've moved their cage into a large walk in closet (like a small room) where tonight i plan on keeping it very Brite and during the day will be very dark(like night)...In all hope of course that they will be tricked into thinking Day time is Night time. Since they have been up all day today and have eaten, Tonight they should be too tired to play and sleep through the morning. The brite lights I leave on in the closet will also help them sleep and tomorrow moring I hope they will be up and about. Due to my work schedule They only time i can really play with them is during the day. and with there nocturnal life. In the afternoon I Give them run of the room. but They are too sleepy and stay in one spot. So I MUST try this out. If it doesnt work today i will do it all next weekend. any hints will be great!

I have heard people switching schedules, but have never done it myself.

However, the only thing I can advise is not to make too drastic of changes in their sleeping schedule and to be very consistent with the chages that you do make. I think that would be highly stressful for the glider.

It should be fine. Just make sure if you do it, keep it that way. Switching back again could be harmful. I know with my gliders, their sleeping patterns changed when I had no power during Hurricane Wilma. They woke up earlier because there were no house lights on.

same here. but its been a week and they are back to normal.

I'm thinking this idea could be harmfull because them being nocturnal...naturally...i dont supose they're eyes could take light all day long unless you live in a cave (figuratively speaking)

you're joking, right?
an animal's lifestyle and instincts determine whether it is diurnal or nocturnal.

if an Australian man and woman move to america and have a child, does that child sleep all day, and play all night?

sorry. what i meant was it should be doable since if your schedule is awake at morning and sleep at night and you move to the other side of the world, then you technically have to be awake at night and sleep in the morning. instead of your regular schedule. it will take a while but it will work. so if an australian family move then yes technically the child will be away at night, australia time, it will have to adapt its sleeping habits. i was half asleep already and couldnt really explain things! hahaha

I'm curious what others think about this too. I have worked very hard for three months to do the opposite and "make" Mirrhi nocturnal (LOL), and we are actually making slow progress.

What my concern would be is how would they get any natural light source, if you keep it dark during the day, and artificially light at night?

I have always been under the impression that although direct sunlight is not good for them, they do need indirect natural light?

Of course I could be VERY wrong too!

Well I did it! I changed my girls to be active during the day! Their cage is no longer in my closet. And I no longer have to leave the lights on at night. I moved their cage back where is was and the room is kept dark by keeping the windows covered. (I darken whatever room I bring them in)
It was very simple to make the switch. If you don't mind keeping it dark for them during the day then the switch is for you! Its nice and quiet at night and I can actually have a full nights sleep.
Now they get up to play late morning and I feed them at about 12:00 and they stay up run on their wheel play with their toys. and its just so wonderful to see them awake. I used to have to wake up in the middle of the night to see them play but too tired myself to play with them. Now I am able to let them out while there up and let them have fun. I think they like it better this way too. They now take advantage of the play time that I offer in the afternoon instead of sleeping through it. Right now they are awake and playing tag in my Office. I've never seen them have so much fun!
Believe me this is very easy to do It only took me 2 days! The first day its important to tire them out. I didnt however deprive them from sleep. I let them take naps. That night The lights stayed on and they stayed in their hut. (This worked because they hate the light and they were active day so all they wanted to do was sleep!) The next day I made the room dark and fed them in the afternoon -Right away they stayed up and started playing. and the following night was the last time I left the lights on. They were asleep before I even turned them on! Now even with the lights off they still sleep through the night. Sure they may get up to have a snack or a drink but never to play. and of course during the day they still take naps but all and all They now Play during the day and Sleep at night!
