Skin reactions to WFB gliders

Skin reactions to WFB gliders - 12/30/08 02:16 AM

I have a really strage question and I am really not crazy. My skin seems to react to white face blonde gliders. Not just mine, but anyone's WFB's. My gliders crawl all over me and it is never an issue. For some reason, my skin reacts to any WFB glider that crawls on me. It isn't bad enough for me to not have WFB's (I have two) but enough to make me notice. It doesn't do it when my grays crawl on me. Has anyone else had anything like this happen?

I am allergic to ALL of my gliders...my Dr. prescribed me some good drugs and for the most part it helps but I am always stuffy...my skin gets little red bumps from them crawling on me but no worse with my WFB's than my greys????

My Dr. said it may get better after I have my boys neutered...I am hoping because the drugs are expensive!

You're silly. ^-^

Are your WFB's nails longer than the greys? Hows their living conditions? I remember reading that gliders have a bacteria in their nails that causes some people's skin to "bump" up because it's irritated by it. Longer nails = more bacteria = more chance of bumps. And then dirty cages also lead to more bacteria build-up too. dunno

Oh Donna! Ugh! Just got your email..so sorry, my BIL passed away Christmas eve so I've been out till now. frown

Are they eating anything different at all? Any toys or fabric that is different in their cages? I haven't noticed this myself with my WFB's and haven't seen anyone else with this problem YET. Maybe someone will have a good answer!!

Good question, could they be longer than the others? I know some of my WFBs' nails can get longer than the others cause they are so spazzy so I don't get to them as often. (lol)

As far as her cages, they are CLEAN! No dirty or nasty stuff with her babies! grin

I'm more allergic to certain cats (light haired, short haired are way worse for me than dark haired, long haired cats). So it could be possible. People are generally allergic to something in the saliva of animals (although fur and dander can cause a lot of problems as well. Some animals produce more of these than others, and some of us are more sensitive to these differences. dunno (That is how my allergist explained it, only much more technical, obviously roflmao )

How are you around leus?

The long haired cats have less dander because of the type of coat they have. I wouldn't think that would be it becasue as far as I know suggies have the same type of fur even if its a different color. I'm thinking its the nails.

I am not silly. It is real, as crazy as it sounds. I put the post on here to ask questions because it seemed so strange.

Their nails aren't longer or anything. My two WFB's are baby dolls. We can do anything with them. And no, their cages aren't dirty. SugarBlossoms knows I spoil my babies rotten! I have three children (13, 6, & 4)that handle all of our gliders so I am very careful with their nails.

I am fine with the leu's. I have never had a reaction to any other animal except spiders. I have reactions to common spiders.

Donna, I will call Dr. Williams tomorrow and see if she might have an answer for you on this. Hopefully, she will know something or give us an idea as to what to do abou it. HUGS

No one ever believes me either (but my allergist, luckily). But it isn't just the long/short hair for me and cats. I am actually more (very) allergic to light colored cats than I am dark (which is why I have had 3 black, or mostly black, cats).

But that's why I wondered about the leus (more light colored fur). There could just be something in the genes that make them wf that also affect their dander/fur/protein production (or any number of things we couldn't possibly know) that you are sensitive to. You might talk to an allergist and see if there is anything you can put on your skin after contact that will help. dunno

Thanks for believing me! I know it sounds odd. I am sure one of the doctors or vets around here could tell me something to try. Turtlenecks are always an option if I must. Getting rid of my WFB's is just not an option. I am way too attached!

That's really strange then. 0.0 I never knew something like this existed since it's the same species...strange.

My WF male makes my skin break out in bumps once in a while and my grey...champ..whatever she is! doesn't. I always just thought it was because he has such a strong grip and that was what was irritating my skin but now I'm wondering if I'm allergic to 'em too. I broke out in welts from him once. frown

@Sugarlope I believe you hun, but the dark colored cats could just be a different type of fur too. There are different types of black cats. I have 2 myself. One makes me sneeze like crazy, the other sleeps on my face and I have no problems. When I went to the allergist he told me I was allergic to them and need to get rid of them or if that isn't an option to keep them out of my room. Needless to say I didn't go back to him. But It could be a grooming thing too. Cat's that groom their fur more have more dander. It could also be from a different diet as the dander comes from their saliva.

Perhaps your WFB groom more? I could see how it could be similar to a cat thing where they would create more dander?

Maybe it has to do with nail color? I know my WF has white feet and my BB has darker feet. Maybe the nails are lighter on the WF. I know with horses, white hooves are softer than dark hooves, so maybe it's similiar with the gliders? dunno

This is something along the lines of what I was thinking also. I know that (at least what my allergist told me) with cats, there is a protein (or something) in their saliva that causes the primary problem for most people, some cats produce more of it than others and some cats groom more than others which is why people are more or less allergic to different cats.

I break out with duckie as well... the way i tell the diff. with his nails just being sharp and scratching me to the bumps is that his scratches burn so bad (I have to put neo on after he runs my body frown ) because it is a cut. Well the bumps dont burn they itch like crazy...
