??? Are there obvious signs of aging??? - 10/30/04 11:06 AM

[:"green"]I have a pair of gliders that I adopted a couple of years ago from a woman who had adopted them from someone else. I believe they are about 8-10 years old, but I really don't know. I have noticed some differences in their appearance from my other gliders, but don't know if this is due to genetics or to their age .
Here are the things that I have noticed: their ears are almost completely pink with just small splotches of very pale grey. Their tails are very light grey in color at the tips instead of black. There is still a difference between the tip & the rest of the tail, though. Their face markings are not as dark as my other gliders'.
Could these be signs of old age in a glider? Or is it just genetic coloring? I've been wondering for a long time, and the people I have talked to about it (about a dozen) don't have any idea...
If anyone has any idea, I would really like to know...

Also, does anyone know the average age of when a female glider goes through menopause? I haven't been able to find the answer to this question either...

All information about these topics will be greatly appreciated [/]

I'm not really sure about signs of aging but as far as menopause I have been told that about 7-8 years old, the females will stop producing offspring. Now is this menopause as we know it or what??? Not sure.

The 'old' gliders I have seen, I could tell they were older. (One of our members who passed away here a couple years ago, had an old male named Bull. He was around 8-10 years at the time, you could look at him and tell he was an 'old' man. His fur was changing from his beautiful grey/brown, to patches of light grey. You could watch his movements and he moved like he was older. )
My little Mya, we didnt know her exact age when she came to us, but you could tell she wasnt a 'joey' like the breeder led everyone to believe. In the last year of her life, we noticed that her little stripes/around her leg haunches were getting grey/white hairs in them, and her fur was more coarse than silky soft (although she did have a soft nice coat), kinda like how other animals when they get old (and some people), their hair gets kind of coarser. In the last couple years of her life she was a lot more laid back and mellow, at times more grumpy, wasnt as playful as the younger 'kids' or like she once was. You could just look at her and tell she was getting older. (Oh I miss her! )
Im not real sure of the age they stop producing offspring... but I do know there have been some gliders here that were ove 10 that still produce.

Sorry Im not much help...

[:"orange"]Thank you both for your input. It helps to know that I'm not just imagining things...
Hope you had a Happy Halloween! [/]
