PLEASE have a back up plan !

PLEASE have a back up plan ! - 04/12/08 02:20 AM

Ok, I am writing this after reading a few different emergency posts recently where the owner was incredibly unprepared for the emergency.

PLEASE HAVE
* An Emergency Vet who is glider knowledgeable
* An extra cage if you have more than one glider in case one needs to be separated
* An E-collar for each glider in your home
* An Emergency cash stash for the vet
* A way to get to the vet

If anyone can think of anything else feel free to add...

It breaks my heart to see gliders suffering because the owners who promised to love and care for them were not prepared in the event of an emergency !

a backup plan for larger than anticipated bills is also a good idea - some vets don't take care credit, some people don't qualify for care credit..

an emergency kit that's kept stocked - you never know when you may need something in it!

may I also suggest making sure your e-collars still fit on a monthly basis - gliders grow, they gain weight, and the collar that used to fit no longer does

Have 2 emergency vets and 2 regular vets. Have a backup plan for your backup plan. lol! Also, if you travel, have the number for a vet in the states you will be traveling through.

Always have numbers to a Glider Knowledable Vet that is willing to do phone consults with other VETS when an emergency arises. Most ER Vets do not deal with gliders, however, any of them would be willing to do a phone consult to help with an emergency situation.

GREAT topic Melissa. thumb

Wouldnt it be great to have a printable, emergency check-list, for everyone to use clap Is there already something like this? It would include all the things that you would need, in case of an emergency, along with different numbers to vets who are willing to do phone consults. We could try to get everyone with websites to include them on their sites. That way, they would definitely be seen.

When I worked at an emergency clinic our vets usually were TOTALLY clueless about most exotics (and we had like 10 vets ) Most reg drs don't know enough to help, so do have a backup. Even if you can find an emergency clinic thats open late in another area you can call in an emergency and who can maybe help you is vital.

This is all really great advice. I got on thegliderinitiative.com today and am planning on getting several e-collars and one of the emergency kits. They have a combo kit that has things for natural disasters and medical emergencies. I wont have my babies for several weeks but I wanna make sure Ive got these before they come home. Are those kits good? Can you think of anything that may need to be added to them? I haven't thought about needing a second cage, though. Thats next on my list, then! smile

OK...I have a vet, I have a credit card that is used solely for my animals, and I have two extra repts. but I need some e-collars and I need to find the list of things I will need for an emergency kit for hand rasing a joey...my little Faye has 2 IP and she is about 6 weeks along so I want to get the stuff ready now.

Can someone give me the site with the list of emergency items needed..I saw it a few weeks ago but can't remember where!

What I just did at our recent get together was made small notebooks, like a memo book. Put in Suz number, Peggy's vet Dr Tristan's number, all the local vets, noted emergency vets, added local glider peeps from here name, address, phone, email and GC name...

Something good to have in case of emergency, in need of a sitter, to leave with a sitter, whatever really.

Jackie Chan's mom is selling a glider handbook. It has everything you need in an emergency. It is like a baby book where you fill in theblanks on some stuff and other stuff is already there. These are a great addition to your emergency kits.

This is a great idea.. a check list. Since my hubby and roommate really don't interact with my suggies and the one time my hubby had to feed Quincy when I worked late..lol..he made a huge mess and cut the fruit too large.

And feeding syringes...in case of dehydration.

Thank you Karen for mentioning my book.

Just wanted to add that my emergency manual includes the following:
a disaster/evacuation checklist

recipe cards for many diets so that your recipe/instructions are available to others in an emergency

a Place to list your normal glider schedule.

Emergency contact numbers for experienced people in the community as well as contact numbers for vets willing to consult with your emergency vet.

ecollar instructions

A place to list numbers of people in your area who can help in an emergency

Medication cards that can be placed on your cage.

Your emergency contact information

Glider Custody agreement forms - in case you are unable to care for your gliders any more, you will have your wishes for them outlined for family/friends.

Weight chart

These are all things that i have found necessary and handy in dealing with all of Jackie Chan's and my other glider's medical issues.
