What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 01:42 AM

...For two male sugar gliders, 1 1/2 years old, plus toys and cage?

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 02:03 AM

I'd say it depends on the location, the temperment, are they neutered, the size of the cage, how many or what kind of toys, and how desperately you want them re-homed...

They're close, neutered, small cage, a good few nice toys, and the people are more worried about a good home.

In that situation, if I was placing the ad, I would ask for offers.

yes, but the people have asked me for a price...

Notice it says males, everyone...My babies are girls, just in case anyone thinks Al and Trix are going anywhere. smile

I knew it wasn't you smile Um, for a small cage that would probably have to be replaced and older gliders, I would say $100 to $150 would be fair, as that would weed out the weirdos as well.

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 02:24 AM

It really depends. If this is from your craigslist ad, expect it! I've gotten several emails from mine. But, I don't pay for them. frown Check out the toys and the cage and make an offer based on those - most cages are the 'starter' cages they came with.

Since they are neutered, you might offer $50? In this area, most people are asking around $50 on Craigslist. dunno If they are wanting a good home, they are probably more concerned about you than your money!

No, it's not from craigslist. Lol you guys are too smart for me. I wanted to keep it a secret, but...I'm rehoming two male sugar gliders. I've gone to see Scout and Dill and I know their story and their mommy and daddy, and I just have to. I love them.

$50 for just the boys or the whole shebang? I'm getting their wodent wheel, all their pouches, a good amount of toys, the cage...And, most important, the little ones grin

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 03:08 AM

I would make it at least $100.

I have seen people in Washington (more Seattle area, but who knows how far away they are adopting gliders) asking to adopt gliders for around $40 or $50. The girl is then keeping them in poor conditions (we're talking a 1x1.5x1.5 cage at best) and a [censored] diet and then rehoming them for more money. She doesn't even have enough money to pay the vet bills.

PM me if you want her name so you can make sure this is not the same girl.

But for two gliders, and a cage, $100 would be extremely reasonable. Anyone who isn't willing to pay $100 for them, or says they can't afford it, also can't afford proper medical care and isn't ready to be a good pet owner.

With $50 you might get some idiots who can't truly afford to care for an animal.

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 03:15 AM

I'm paying, not someone else smile I'm taking in two rehomes.

I told her I would pay $125...Maybe that's too much, but the cage is really nice and the toys are cool and the boys are so loveable...

Ugh...Thank God I never had to deal with that girl, Jen. I've never had to rehome anyone before. If I come across her...oh yeah, sorry, G rated board.

Are you getting these two babies? If so CONGRATULATIONS!

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 03:30 AM

Thanks, Linda! I sure am trying!

She says she and her bf paid way more than what I'm offering and is looking closer to $200. I upped it to $150. Past that...she'll have to find someone else. She said she would work out my previous price, so I think going to $150 might have helped her decide. Here's hoping! Wish I had pics for you guys, but not yet frown

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 03:48 AM

Whenever I've adopted out foster kitties I've always asked for an adoption fee($50), but after finding the "perfect" new home I'd wait for the new owner to come and pick them up and then I'd tell them that they didn't have to pay the fee and that they should use the money to spoil their new "babies". cloud9

I'd suggest you(or whoever it is you're refering to) do something similar. wink

Obviously, you'd want to recoup a bit for the supplies(maybe $50?), but for the fee you should ask about $100-$200. If the new owner is WILLING to pay that then you know that they have that money on them and are ready to give it up. So, once they come to get the gliders, tell them that you really only want such-and-such amount and they can use the rest of the money to start an "emergency fund" or to buy a bigger cage for the gliders. smile

That's just my $0.02 and what *I* would do.

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 03:52 AM

I was hoping that would be the case...Apparently not.

$200...i would be happy with having a good home if it were me...Ugh, I'm getting bitter and worried. She said there were others wanting to look at them, so now I feel like if I don't offer $200, she's going to just give them to someone else, after me being the only one to meet them.

*sigh* I need a facehug.

roflmao Yeah, it was all I could do not to tell her what I REALLY THOUGHT when I picked up that poor little glider from her roflmao

I think $125 is reasonable, if the gliders are somewhat friendly and healthy.

I think I recall paying the same amount for my Zeus, and he was friendly and healthy, but had a small cage and no wheel in the cage frown And that was just one glider. Standard grays go for around $150 in many parts of the country, you're getting two gliders, and cage and toys would have to be probably at least $100, so I don't think you're getting ripped off. dunno

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 04:00 AM

I just consider getting them into a nice home to be enough. If they were joeys, yeah, b/c I paid $175 for Al and Trix, but if I ever had to rehome my girls, I would charge $50 and find a good home and let them ahve the stuff for free. Having them happy is most important to me.

Oh well. This chick ain't thinking along the same lines.

Well...in her defense she is probably making sure that you can afford to provide a good home for her gliders. She doesn't know that you take good care of your gliders hug2

When I thought we were going to have to rehome Zoey, I posted that there would be a $100 rehoming fee, but then after I selected an applicant I was going to give her and her cage to them for free mlove

For two gliders with cage & toys - I would say $200 is a fair price.

... I paid $100 for a re-homed 3 month old female.

... and I paid $150 just for my cage (new).

I think your offer is very reasonable. Maybe you could offer them references? Your vet or people from GC would probably be willing to vouch for you. If they choose someone based on how much they can offer, you know what i$ more important to them.

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 05:21 PM

Yeah, I'm a bit confused by this too - why is this person rehoming the gliders? Surely not just to see how much money she can make from them - that doesn't make sense. Sounds to me like she wants to make sure they go to someone who can afford them, and she probably HAS spent a bunch of money getting them a nice cage, neutered, etc. I would turn the tables on her and ask her for a vet reference, etc., then I would decide truly what the cage and "accessories" are worth to you, and only offer more money based on that. Just my opinion!

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/24/08 10:58 PM

Thanks guys...I'm just really kinda let down because in her ad she said 'money is the very last thing we'll talk about...it's the least important', giving me the idea she wouldn't be after getting money back for all the money she spent. If she *was* looking to get a good chunk of dough for what she and her bf put out, I would understand...but she could have said that instead of 'money doesn't matter' in the ad.

In any case, I just hope I remain the person they are most impressed with. I've fallen in love with the boys, having gone to see them and look into their little faces and handled them.

I told her if she wants to get rich off of the toys and such, I will pay $150 for just the boys and the cage as the rehoming fee. I found that pretty reasonable...

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/28/08 02:42 AM

I just recently rehomed my gliders as I was not able to spend as much time with them as they deserved, and I also found out I am expecting my second child in March, so that would mean even less time. I placed an ad on here that explained I was not asking for money as I wanted the money spent on the care of the gliders. When I placed an ad on craigslist, I asked for $100 to weed out the ones looking for a cheap pet, but the lady I ended up choosing I only asked for $25 of it and told her to spend the rest on spoiling the babies.

Im getting a pair (+ their oop joey) next month toys and cage for 250.
I thought it was a good deal because the cages can be very spendy.
Sounds like your getting a good deal as well.

Re: What is a reasonable rehoming fee? - 07/28/08 04:31 AM

We paid $400.00 for a pair not long ago. The male is neutered and a WFB. They came with NOTHING except a nasty old pouch.

Personally, I don't think 200.00 is much considering they are neutered and come with some things. Our vet charges almost 200.00 PER neuter (by laser). JMO
