Possibility of shipping a glider to South Africa?

Possibility of shipping a glider to South Africa? - 02/07/10 04:41 PM

There are no White Faced Blonde, Ringtail Mosaic or White Faced Grey gliders in South Africa and we find them just too adorable. cool

We are looking at the possibility to get one or two of these, definitely not for breeding purposes.

What do you guys think? Will it be too stressful to fly a joey or two from America to South Africa? We think that the flight may be too stressful but would like more opinions.

Another question: does anyone know how gliders ended up to come to South Africa?

I'm not a breeder, but that's a long flight and there are so many regulations for shipping animals internationally. Here's a few helpful things I found about shipping but I wouldn't do it frown

I don't know how long such a flight would take. If it takes too long, I'd be afraid to ship a young joey. It would be ok for an adult if it was shipped in the morning so it would arrive before dinner time.

I don't like shipping, but in your case, you wouldn't have a choice. I'd make sure to buy from a reputable breeder who has experience with shipping gliders. They'll be able to work with you and answer your questions.

Any suggestions to find a reputable glider breeder with possible international shipping experience?

Maybe post a wanted add in the classifieds section of the type of glider you want? Have you already checked with your country's laws to see what you'll need first? Like, does the suggie have to be quaratined for any amount of time? I think they quaratine for a month in some country's to make sure animals shipped don't have any diseases. It's worth looking into so you know what will happen to this baby.. smile

Long flights and how many plane changes are the first concerns with shipping. Second is quarentine laws. If the glider (or any animal) had to be held in quarentine, most "good" breeders won't even consider shipping.

I think your first step is to research quarentine laws.

With everything I've read from your posts, I wouldn't have a problem adopting to you except for the shipping and potential quarentine.

Our trip from Dulles in Virginia to Johannesburg in South Africa was 14 hrs. I'd say that was way too long for a suggie to be confined.

I believe you would also have to find someone with an Import/Export license. I may be wrong but I know that is why only certain places (such as Arlington, the place that just got raided in Texas)can receive or ship animals like that.

Quarantine can last anywhere from 24 hours to months. Definitely want to check on that.

I'm not too big on flying gliders to begin with, but that seems a little long to me. But I'm no expert either... smile

You can take a small animal as carry on many flights if you actually flew to the US and back yourself. I've seen it done for rodent shows numerous times and have walked past people carrying gerbils in the approved cages for planes when I was frequently flying back and forth from Moline, IL to Atlanta, GA. You still have all the import laws plus the cost for both you and the glider (shipping animals internationally is not cheap anyway) but it would relieve some of the stress. The glider could be reassured by the same person the whole time and stay in the cabin instead of being tossed about by strangers at every plane change and kept near who knows what other critters that are also being shipped. We want a rather rare native Japanese breed of dog and our plan if we ever import is to fly and get it ourselves rather than just having it shipped alone. I think it makes a difference even in that situation despite the fact it would be too big to keep right with us on the plane.

We gave it some thought and think that it will be unfair on the gliders - the long flight and possible quarantine that is. We will however keep on adoring your WFB and Ringtail gliders! ;-)

I also live in South-africa and have 2 normal grey gliders. I also love the different coloured ones, but have NO idea how to get them here...I have also wondered how they actually ended up in S.A if they didn't arrive via airplane

It is possible to have a glider shipped overseas, in fact, someone just posted about their overseas trip with their gliders. You also have to think safety first! A flight to S.A. is much longer than any in-country flight, so you will have to provide adequate food, water, and space since your new glider(s) will be awake during some of the flight.

You can do it, it just takes a ton of effort on your behalf to make sure that it goes smoothly. There is no standard paperwork, no tried and true method, you will have to start from scratch and make sure to cover all of your bases.

Each country requires different paperwork and health certificates, check with your local government to find out where you can get more information.

Good luck!

It's possible, my boys Pompeii and Patron came from Italy! So I am sure you can ship overseas! You just need an International Health Certificate done since they will have a long trip!

Best of luck!

There are Gliders in SA. I can't remember where I saw the article, but we were just in Namibia and I was interested in finding out if anyone down that way had any. Someone had them, but that was in SA. Perhaps you can contact some vet or agency or someone that might steer you in the right direction to a breeder.

Sure thing there are gliders in SA. We just launched our new SA specific sugar glider website at www.sugarglider.co.za to try to educate the SA glider owners. The hard work starts now. All for the good of the glider...
