Even stranger Glider noises than usual!

Even stranger Glider noises than usual! - 06/10/03 05:34 PM

My glider Sadie is pregnant with two babies, and I'm guessing that pretty soon they'll be dangling arms and legs and tails and all of that good stuff out of her pouch.

But in the meantime (and for the past few days in particular) I can hear a strange rattle-snake type hissing noise coming from them. Lately, they've taken to curling up deep in one of the long fleece tubes I made for them rather than their easily accessable pouches, as they did prior to her pregnancy. In other words, they're pretty far removed from me, and its not visible as to whether Poe (male), Sadie, or both are making the noise. My guess is Sadie, just because I recognize it as more like her "voice".

Have any of you, who have had pregnant gliders, heard this distinct noise before? Like I said, it's not a crab, and it's not a standard glider hiss. It sounds more like an angry rattlesnake (or what I imagine one would sound like).

I'd be grateful for any input! Thanks!

Well I am unsure if my one is preggie or not (still trying to figure that out as I just got her and we are not completely bonded) but if she is it is from a glider other than my male. During the daytime she will do that too but when I look at them in the chin house they are just laying there......

It sounds like a normal momma sound. My mothers do it AFTER the babies come oop. Are you sure those babies aren't out already? It is a rather startling noise, and I thought something was definitely wrong when I first heard it. More than anything it's the mommies communicating to her babies. I think she is trying to get them to adjust their positions on her nipples when they do that.

Since they aren't easily accessible to you right now, perhaps her babies are out and she is just talking to them.

No need to worry!

Thanks so much for the assurance and shedding some light on what that noise could be BabyDevilsAngel! I'm so excited to know that maybe it's a form of communication between momma and baby(ies!). Gliders are such amazing creatures, arent they I know that the babies aren't out yet, i was actually holding Sadie yesterday, cupped in my hands against my chest, when i noticed she was licking her pouch. The pouch opening expanded as she did this, and i could actually see a little earth-worm looking tail! It was so exciting! I get the feeling that Sadie will be a great momma, and the fact that she's communicating with the babies even before they're out just reinforced this notion:)

Thanks again!!

My littl Lexy has 2 babies and I noticed her making the same noise even before they were oop. I agree she is just talking to the babies. I have also noticed Logon (their father) make the same noise a couple of times when he was the only one in the nest box with them.

I'm so glad to hear that you guys know what i was talking about. Granted I wasn't *too* afraid, just because of how vocal Gliders are in general, and I assumed it was just yet another noise that meant something to them. The only thing i was concerned about was that it sounded like shivering, and I was concerned about maybe her being sick, though that really didnt' make much sense. Just a momma's paranoia!

It is so awesome to hear their sounds with their babies. Gliders make such awesome parents!! They sing, the noise I think you are referring to, sounds like they are telling the joeys to get off the nipple or move from where they are at, in the pouch, if they are oop, they are wanting them to stop nursing. Everything is ok! Enjoy their sounds! I wish mine made more of them!
