Baby Eyes

Baby Eyes - 09/19/05 03:12 AM

I have read many places and have heard from people that joeys will usually open their eyes by the 2nd week... Since I am hand raising, do you think there will be a delay in everything including when they open their eyes?

Also, their eyes have been a little crusty kind of like when we all wake up with sleep in our eyes. The vet told me not to worry, but of course being me, I worry. Normal? I just gently wipe it with my finger.

When they open their eyes, do you think I should expect the worst and expect them to be mortified of me and my b/f since they have never seen anything??? I mean, we're giants compared to them. LOL They aren't scared of us in the least bit now, but who knows when they start seeing things.

Okay, sounds silly, but just wanted to know. Thanks!

[:"green"]Tina, they should still open their eyes at about 14 days o.o.p. I wouldn't worry about the crusty discharge from their eyes unless its really a lot of it. Just a tiny bit, probably normal.
No, they're not going to be terrified when they see you & Ben. They have no clue what they are supposed to see when they open their eyes. They identify you & Ben by your smell & so they will still know that you are "mommy & daddy".

YAY!!!!!!!!! Thank you... I was just thinking that if I were that small and I opened my eyes to find something or someone 5 million times bigger than me I'd be pretty freaked out. LOL I know, I said it was silly.

Nope, not heavy discharge or anything from the eye. It's probably normal, but I get paranoid if they sleep funny. I swear if I could have a camera in there recording them I would. hahaha

Thanks!

Okay, I don't want to sound stupid, but I've never dealt with joeys before except for Star who I got at 8 weeks OOP.

Do their eyes open at different times? Let me specifiy: Will one eye open before the other. (Example: Chance's left eye looks like it is sort of opened like a slit but his right eye is still shut.)

I don't think he can see out of his left eye yet even though I can sort of see his eyeball. Any ideas? Thank you!

Yes, it is very possible they will open at different times. They can open as early as 4-5 days oop and usually prior to 14 days. Just remember, every glider is different. So if one opens their eyes today and the other doesn't for a few more days, still normal.

Is it still normal that one eye opens before the other? Thanks for the other information Teresa. :o)

Update on day 14:

Chance still has his left eye slightly opened and the right eye is still [censored]. Hope has both eyes shut still...

Do ya'll think Chance can see me out of his left eye? He hasn't freaked out or spazed on me yet. LOL

I wonder if I accidently wrote a curse word instead of the word "shut" where it is censored. SORRY... Totally accidental. I meant to say SHUT.

Tina, sorry I wasn't clear on my answer. Me thinks I need more sleep!

Yes, the can open each eye at different times. And as for can he see out of the one, probably but I would guess things might be a bit blurry for him still.

(sometimes the censors are overly sensitive, not to worry)

Thanks Teresa! I hope he can see me... I bet I look like a big old scary monster to him. And you were clear, I think we ALL need more sleep. Today I'm averaging oh... 3 hours b/c of the crying joeys who want food every 45 min instead of 1 hour now... This is tough. LOL

I'll show you all pics and update you all on the joeys later when I get the memory stick out of the camera to show you all what I mean... Appreciate all the info!

[:"green"]Tina - I can't wait to see updated pix of these little wonders! You're doing an awesome job. Since the joeys are crying for food more often, you may want to increase the amount of baby cereal you put into the formula by a skosh.

Got it, more baby cereal. LOL Those suckers eat so fast! I swear, if they're not eating, they want to eat and if they are in my hand, they are sucking and looking around for a nipple.

Chance is still kind of looking at me like he is blind... Sorta bobs his head and then shuts his left eye when he eats.

Still nothing on his right eye or either of Hope's. :o(

[:"green"]Be patient, they'll open their eyes within the next day or two. It always amazes me to see how they can have one eye open & the other one stays closed for a day or so... I'd be closing my one open eye, too!

Ben calls him Cyclopse right now b/c he looks so funny! I think he can see now b/c I usually blow warm air on them while they eat, and today was the first time when I put them by my mouth, Chance started crabbing as if to say, "HEY LADY! Don't eat me!" hahahahaha
