I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!!

I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 10/31/05 10:36 PM

I took on the responsibility of a very, very young sugar glider yesterday and I need some advice. He seems to be about 3 weeks out of the pouch (open eyes, vocal, slightly--but not completely active...etc.) but cannot maintain his body temperature, so we keep him close to us at all times. My dad is getting a heat lamp so I can keep his cage warmer. He is eating baby food and drinking water, but I need to know if there is a milk formula (like for human babies) that I can make up for him to drink. I got a variety of baby foods--some with chicken, some with veggies, and some with different fruits. Please let me know ASAP if I need to have a supplement of some sort. I think that I read somewhere in the past that there is a kitten milk formula that is able to be used for this sort of thing.

Thanks in advance!

Isn't it called KMR? Does that work?

btw...I feed my sugar gliders BML, but I don't think that that is sufficient.

I don't know if he's old enough for baby BML yet. I'll try to find some help for you quickly.

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 10/31/05 10:43 PM

Yes, you can use baby bml for him. It is the same as regular bml, but no eggshells or wheat germ. He needs to be warm or he won't eat, and you will have to potty him. He won't be able to go on his own.

Yes, feed the baby bml, with the puppy milk replacer. Also make sure you don't use the wheat germ!!!

We keep him warm and I have helped him go to the bathroom several times. I do not have the time to make the baby bml tonight, that will have to be done this weekend, but in the meanwhile, is the KMR okay to use?

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 10/31/05 10:47 PM

Is it the puppy milk replacer or the kitten one?

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 10/31/05 10:49 PM

Here check out this link. No, don't use the kitten, only the puppy replacer!

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 10/31/05 10:52 PM

You will need to make the baby bml before this week-end. Tomorrow if you can't tonight. It is my understanding that the puppy replacer alone is only okay for 2-3 days.

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 10/31/05 10:58 PM

He is also big enough to drik the puppy replacer out of your hand instead of using a syringe or bottle.

Sheila help me learn this and it is great just look under rejected joeys and it will show you how to feed them from your hand

Hope this helps

Thank you all so much for all of your help! He is big enough to drink water and eat baby food on his own, but he is just too small to be on his own.

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 11/01/05 05:48 AM

Please make the baby BML before the weekend. Poor little guy is working against the odds being so young without mom. Give him every chance you can.

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 11/01/05 06:05 AM

No kitten replacer. Puppy is fine.

My website at the bottom of my signature has information on hand raising joeys. I have 2 that I have been handraising since they were 6 days OOP. Also, contact sugarglidersuz on here for more info. She was a great deal of help with my joeys. Here website is: www.suzsugargliders.com

I did not feed mine puppy bml b/c I do not feed BML in this house (I used to). There are other things you can feed if you do not use BML as your staple diet. Just letting you know. Don't feel pressured into the BML b/c I didn't use it and my babies are doing just fine.

Also, I'd go ahead and go to your local pet store and get a 10 gallon tank and a top for it along with a SMALL reptile heat pad (8x8inches) for the warmth and add lots of fleece in the incubator. The heat light will get too hot if you are using one for a reptile. Sometimes, it might not add enough heat b/c of where the bulb is positioned.

PM me if you need anything.

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 11/01/05 05:46 PM

I use the Puppy Replacer Esbilac and the Wombaroo, both are fine. You can find the Esbilac at most pet stores and I believe I've even seen it at Wal-Mart.

I also found, along with Suz's great information, the below listed site also offered quite a bit of details in hand raising and the care of rejected joeys:
Joeys
Also, how to, step by step, set up your incubator if necessary:
Incubator set up

PS: Kitty milk has way too much fat and causes diareah, subsequently leading to dehydration and eventually death, so be careful not to feed the kitty replacement.

I have been using the wombaroo milk replacer as a suppliment for my joey. She is 12 days oop now.

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 11/02/05 04:41 AM

I made an incubator out of a large plastic critter keeper container (I do not have the counter space for a 10 gallon tank at this time) and I bought a standard heating pad set on low. I bought the esbilac and I do have time to make the BML tomorrow afternoon, so that is what I'll be doing. He is doing great otherwise, though! He is moving around and making small leaps (although usually quite unsuccessful...lol ). Thank you everyone so much for all of your help! I'll keep you posted on the status of the little guy.

P.S...His name is little bear and he has a midget tail, but is he cute as ever!

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 11/02/05 05:09 AM

I didn't mean to "pressure" her to use BML. Wombaroo, or whatever, I was just worried about using an incomplete formula for too long.

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 11/02/05 05:15 AM

Hehe...it's alright! I didn't feel pressured at all! I already use BML, so it's no biggie for me to make more, it's just that I need to put a half hour aside tomorrow to do that. I've just been really busy...especially since we're moving in the next few weeks, but the new house is only about 10 minutes away.

I'll post pictures when I can. My dad took a few the other night that are absolutely precious!

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 11/02/05 07:22 AM

Oh I wasn't saying that you in particular pressured her. When I was researching formulas, everyone said that the only one was puppy BML and that was the only thing I should use. I just wanted to make sure Alyssa knew there were others out there is all.

Just to let you know, make sure you put lots of layers of fleece on top of the heating pad so it doesn't get too hot. Have fun and lots of luck.

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 11/02/05 01:54 PM

I have carefresh beddding in the bottom, so the litle one will not get burnt. He does dig around in it a bit, but he doesn't ever stay on the bottom. The heating pad is not on hot enough to burn him, though

Re: I NEED INFORMATION ASAP!!! - 11/03/05 01:42 PM

The webpage is great! It had quite a bit of information on it. I'm feeding him the baby BML, esbilac, and a couple of different types of babyfood and he eats quites a bit! He's a funny little guy and I look forward to seeing him mature and bond closer with me. My guys have been very good with him and clean him and such. I do not keep the him with them 24/7, but I will put him in their pouch for a few minutes at a time every now and then. He's doing great, my guys are great...everybody's happy!
