Un-Named Nematode - 09/08/00 10:17 PM

I just recieved more info on the unnamed nematode, and I do want to say in advance that the names of the vets involved are being withheld, I also wish to say that this is scarey as all get out... please don't try to self diagnose this, But is is important that this info be out there...
They were each dealing with cases of self-mutilation, and were trying to
determine the cause. She said that at this point there is no other way to diagnose it other than postmortem, or if you're lucky enough to get one egg in the fecal test. She said in the cases they found, there were
very few eggs (about 6) in the entire igestive tract. It's not really an irritation causing the biting, but the migration of an egg through the blood
stream to the brain, where it hatches, and then lays more eggs in the brain.
These hatch, which cause neurological problems, which leads to the self mutilation.
Once the neuro signs are there, there is no cure.
This is very scarey because we don't know how it is originated, not how to diagnose it.

Is there any known type of preventive medication to give to gliders that will kill/prevent this before it get full blown? ( like dogs, cats, horses, etc. )
Also, were ther any common denominators? Diet, cages, bedding, exposure, etc.?

Rosie, I am going to call the vets involved with this Monday, I have loads of questions and more help to offer them regarding this.. obviously expense is no object, we have been researching the self mutilation thing for so long and we run into road blocks, another has opened for us on this, and a glider is still alive, he was caught in the early stages, (no real damage was done. They do have an E-collar on him, hoping that will work till more info comes back, right now all the tests that are being done on him is coming back negitive, that is even scarier.. But without mentioning her name, I do wish to take this time to Say
THANK YOU.. she has been up with him in shifts 24/7 for the past week, and she is sparing no expense on the vet costs, she has had just about every test available run, and still is awaiting more results..
For the vets/ drs, and microbiologists that are helping in all this I too wish to thank them.. In All the years I have been researching Gliders and working with them, I have never found a more dedicated group. Many times the money and finances come from their own pockets and the time that is dedicated is theirs as well. There is no funding for this, so I do wish to thank all those that are trying very hard to stop this or at least find a way to diagnose it.
As for Kaya, I will email her for an update, she does write once in a while and Let me know how she is doing..last I heard she was fine..
I also wish to thank Renee (kayas person) for opening the doors on this issue..Without her ordeal, we may have never known this was a possibility..
[This message has been edited by Bourbon (edited 09-09-2000).]

Re: Un-Named Nematode - 09/12/00 05:00 PM

Due to the fact all these people have researched for the good of the glider, and these people have aided and helped in the research, and I will not post their names, then there is no reason for me to update this thread without posting their names and titles.
But since others feel that because of not indulging their whims of releaseing those names, that it draws doubt as to the validity of the research, then the research that is being done here is also being affected, as the team is very large, many of which, I don't have any contact with at all. But the good that has been done is apparant, and the relentless continuation of throwing doubts into the total research areas is not in the best interest of the gliders. That is what OUR goal is. So the information that I recieve regarding this, will be available by request only. Those that require that I devulge the research team will not have to bother requesting it. they can get their own team together and find the info on their own.
Now I request this thread be closed..
[This message has been edited by Bourbon (edited 09-12-2000).]
