What types of sleeping pouches do you use?

What types of sleeping pouches do you use? - 11/17/15 05:00 AM

The type of sleeping pouches we have for Houdi have tiny openings. They remind me of beehives. Since we are unable to get him into a bonding pouch, we will hold him in his sleeping pouch. But it's a bit hard to interact with him given the type of sleeping pouch he has. I can get a finger in and give him scratches, which he seems to like. But that's about it.

I believe it was Phil who had said he and his wife will have their gliders in their sleeping pouch while they watch t.v. and take turns putting their hands in with them. That would be nice to be able to do.

What types of sleeping pouches are there and would be recommended?

Thanks!

Take a look at the selection from Critterlove . I am partial to what I call the flip top pouches or rather those were favored by my gliders.

Here are the Google search results as well.

Yes, my wife and I do put our hands in while watching TV, at least with our 1st pair. We haven't done that with the 2nd set of rehomes yet, they are still getting used to us and they don't like a hand shoved in their pouch.

We have something similar to the "Standard Pouch" from the Critter Love Link Karen gave you, not exactly the same materials for ours, but the concept is exactly the same.

Here is a pic of one from that site:

We put a C-link or a clip of some sort on the corner and then just clip it to the side of the cage. It works well for our girls, but I know there are many other options out there.

I started out with a hammock but switched to standard pouches. I prefer the deeper ones, as I believe that is preferred by my trio. I do have one cube, which they seem to love, so hope to get another one some day. I do find that the standard pouch is the easiest for me to access and remove them from the cage when they're inside to have daytime "pouch time" or even to transfer to bonding pouch or carrier.

We started with a standard pouch style. They seemed to like it just fine. They always pulled the top leaves into the pouch when they went to sleep. It was nice because we could fit it inside our large bonding pouch.

Then my son learned to use a sewing machine and we made this together. Kind of a parachute style hammock?

We added the fringe because they loved pulling the leaves inside their other pouch. Their first night they pulled in almost every piece of fringe.

They have both pouches in their cage now, but have only gone back to the old one once. We love the new one too since it's easier to get to them as well. We can slowly open it until it lays flat.

Both pouches are hung with carabiners because they are so easy to unclip to remove the pouch from the cage.

One thing we do is to add small pieces of fleece for them inside the pouch, like a blanket. I think it is similar to what Emiller's gliders are doing. It gives them something warm to curl up in and hide under as well.

I love both your pouches Emiller!!

Thanks everyone! I love those flip pouches! Thanks for all the pictures too!

I went through everything again that came with Houdi and I do have some other pouches. I definitely have a standard pouch, so I'll switch over and see how he likes it.

Then, I have some things that are fleece on the outside, but cotton (?) on the outside. They are purchased items. I will post pictures later (they are in the wash). I didn't think other materials were safe.

I finally took some pictures.

First...I just wanted to show a tube that matches what Emily has!

This is a set that came with Houdi. The inside is fleece, but the outside is like sheet material. Tightly woven. Is it safe?

Here are two sleeping pouches that came with him.

This is the type of sleeping pouch he has been using. Very hard to interact with him in there!

Oh, and this one is really big. I have no idea how to use it. What's with the clip?

The pouches and cage set in the first two photos are safe. I am not sure about the pouch on the left in the one picture, are the seams hidden?
If they are hidden seams it is safe if they aren't it isn't safe.

I am not sure about your last photo with that snap either.

Yes, the grey sleeping pouch does have exposed seams. I knew they were dangerous, but curious why? I'll toss that one.

Do you mean the one with the clip? That really big one? Yeah, I don't get it at all. Makes no sense.

So, the zebra print set is safe? The zebra material isn't fleece. Is tightly woven cotton safe? It sure is a cute set!

The concern about exposed seams where cotton is concerned is the raveling that is prone with using cotton. Gliders nails are apt to unravel, and can cause loose threads that can wrap around fingers toes, or wrists / feet and cut off circulation. This can happen while they are asleep.

it's important to check all their bedding for loose seams too. Especially after they have been washed. On fleece bedding, just cut any loose threads, turn inside out and make sure you get them all.

As you have probably already experienced, their nails even when trimmed are like tiny needles and can pick a thread easily. No need to be overly alarmed, just be watchful.

Cotton is fine as long as the seams are hidden, and it is good tight woven cotton. Flannel can be used too. same rules apply as for cotton.

Artemis is a loose thread detector. He's fascinated by them and won't leave them alone. It's an obsession. And he's really active and spastic. So all our cage stuff is fleece with hidden seems. It's better than worrying that something might happen when we're not there to help.

We added an extra layer of fleece as we sewed it together and then cut the strips after turning it right side out. Does that makes sense?

The exposed seems in the small pouch and also in both of the bonding pouches I have are fleece. They aren't unraveling, but I am not comfortable using the pouch in his cage.

Emily - I'm going to make a parachute like yours! smile

It was fun to make. Let me know if you have any questions. I started with 14 X 14 in squares. I think the fringe was a strip 5 in wide. Good luck! smile
