I have a powder coated cage almost exactly like this, and, it's over 2 years old and looks brand new still. I personally love it. I know there have a few here that say they don't like it, but I can only speak for myself, I love it. As for painted cage, powder coating is a specific way they paint it, it's almost like an enamal to me, very strong, not like you would think painted would be. Welcome to GC, hope we see a lot more of you.

I have two of these cages and one very similar, but with 2 doors instead of one. I LOVE them. They are super sturdy and i have not had any problem with rusting...

Re: what about this cage? - 09/29/05 01:14 AM

the cage in the post above this one (hexogonal style) is nice, but it is similar to the ferplast models found here in the UK. I have 3 retired ferplast cages. Why retired?

First the finish on them is a paint, over time it will flake (less than a year for all three of mine in the lower body)

the cage comes flat packed. meaning each side will come off, a result of this is that the panels are thin and flexy and easily twist and warp.

if you look close at the cage you will see that the panels are joined together by a sliding rail, when you take this rail on and off to break the cage down to clean it good (which you will as there is crevices and cracks beyond belief) this also scrapes the paint away. Result= rust. In each joint of the cage is a gap.. a gap which holds urine and bacteria.

Now the coating on the cage wire is the same enamal style paint as the entire cage is coated in... and everything sticks to this paint... and cleaning it can be a major chore.

You probably could get away with cleaning it once per month max if you have only a pair of gliders... any more than that then it is going to be a every two week job minium.

I've recently broken down and having solid stainless steel and aluminum cages built to house my 16 gliders. The cages are aluminum frame with stainless mesh wire. The stainless doesn't allow food and urine to stick to it very well so it easy to clean. It won't rust, and your looking at a true lifetime cage... and I do mean lifetime.

I'm in the UK, so locating specialized facilities to build a cage to my designs was a nightmare. I ended up going through a friend that used to work for a lab that had kennels. He did some metal work for them on the kennels... so I lucked up in the end.

You can shop around if your budget will allow it and locate kennel companies that do vet/zoo type kennels. They normally can custom make what you want. Though custom often means money, but if you have gliders you already know they aren't cheap like a hamster. However these cages will last you a very very very long time.

go to google and search for vet kennels, zoo kennels, custom aviary, and other key words and you can locate several companies that will build to your specifications.
