Hanging wheel in reptarium?

Hanging wheel in reptarium? - 09/30/05 01:42 AM

Has anyone figured out a way to securely hang a Stealth kit from the top of a reptarium? My babies would far rather run at the top of their cage than have it sitting on the bottom. Any ideas? And if you've figured it out, could you post a picture of it?

I myself do not have rep's, but I am sure someone who does will be along to answer this for you soon.

Xglider gave me a great idea tonight!

I haven't tested it yet but I don't see any reason as to why it wouldn't work.

You know those wood rods that usually come with bird cages? Well I have two laying around from Jupiters cage so what I'm planning on doing is setting it on top of my rep. so it rests on two of the parallel sides. It would kind of make an H shape. Then just get a zip tie (or 2 or 3) that is long enough to hang the wheel from, go through the rep, around the wood piece and still be able to close.

I'm using mine to hang a feeding station from but I don't see any reason as to why it wouldn't work For added support you may want to use 2 rods to help balance the weight of the wheel more evenly!

I hope that makes sense! I got a great visual in my head- it's just explaining it that's tough!

Thanks for the idea. Not quite 100% sure what you mean, but I get the idea.

I'm gonna try to rig up my idea tomorrow & I'll post a pic so you can see!

I really think it will work- I don't know what the base of the exact wheel you're talking about looks like. Does it have the pvc frame or does it have that plastic base with the holes OR does it have the metal post base thingy like the wodent wheel has? LOL I'm sure that made no sense!

It has the PVC frame.

Well.... I took a picture of my reptarium with the perch across it. Hopefully this will help you understand what I mean. It's a pretty basic pic but I couldn't hang a wheel for a demo because it was dinner time!

I modified my original idea, so I'm not using this method anymore for the feeding dish (see my other post!) but I still think it would work for a wheel.

All you have to do is place the bar/perch/whatever you find across the top like I did in the pic.

Next- from the outside/top of the rep. push at least 2 zip ties through the mesh but don't make any loops yet.

From the inside hold your wheel *upside down* and with the other hand try to make a loop around the frame of the wheel, then back up through the rep.

Connect the two ends but make sure you include the bar/perch/whatever in the loop.

I think the PVC frames on the stealths are like a square or rectangle- so maybe you should consider using two bars/perches/whatevers for added support & stability. Just place them parallel to each other.

I hope this makes sense- and if you try it, make sure to share your pics!

When the colony is moved to the 5' cage I'll convert the rep back into my normal travel cage for Roxie & Stitch- and I'll probably use this method to hang their wheel when we go on trips!

If you check out the cage link in my signature you'll see how I got my wheel to hang in my homemade rept.

Oooooohhhh.... Where did you get the cage in your link that is on wheels? It's nice!!!

I also really like your playroom! I wish I had room for something like that- 2 bedroom apartment next time

That shelf is awesome! I've never thought of doing it that way- I'm going to check into this!!

As for the wheel- is it just attached with zip ties? I couldn't really tell?

Yep, you're right. I used good old zip ties to attach it to the bottom of the shelf. You can find that shelving at Home Depot or Lowes. They'll cut it for you for free and you can get the tiny plastic pieces to go over the ends that they cut. That way the pieces that were cut won't get them cut on a jagged edge. I attached the shelving with zip ties as well.

The cage that's on wheels was a purchase I made at a Bird Fair. They have some awesome deals at those things.

The HUGE cage was a project my hubby and I put together after some frustration from tents. It's fairly easy to build one if you have lots of time and zip ties. It's easy to clean only if you have a portable steam cleaner, though.
