Recent amputation

Recent amputation - 08/30/17 12:47 AM

Videl just had he hind leg amputated and my wife didn't get clear instructions when picking her up.

I know that if she is picking at it we should distract her with food. Is any level of grooming acceptable for the surgery area.

I have had to remove her bed to watch her and it appears to be a non stop effort to get her to leave it alone.

Anyone who has been through this and can offer me the do' s and donts would be much apprrciated.

You can use this thread or email me at McLaughlinBradley@gmail.com

Thanks in advance!

Edit/update

She wasn't going for the baby food and pain meds so I manually fed it to her. She then began shaking her head as if it tasted bad.

I'm hoping once that kicks in she wont feel any discomfort and stops messing with it.

Hi and Welcome!

Did the vet give you an ecollar?

No, they said they would just slip it off

If you don't have one, here are instructions on how to make one:

This will help keep her from getting to surgery area. You may have to help feed and give her water.

Are the pain med flavored? Did they give you a syringe to give meds?

They have do a neck, and their head is bigger than neck. If you get it on her snug enough, she can't get it off.

Great minds think alike, I was googling this. I'll touch base after it is made, thanks.

Yes, she is going to need an ecollar. Once you get it made and get it on her, it has to be tight enough to stay on.

If you get it on nice and tight, it will be on too tight if her nose turns dark purple.

Please keep us updated on her. I am moving this to Health & Hygiene now.

She can't seem to get it off, however she can get her paw through. It also seems wide like she can't lat down.

I may have installed it poorlt i think.

It needs to be snug as possible around her neck. She shouldn't be able to get her arm through. The E-collar will give you guys a chance to take a break and get rest.

She will continue to try to groom the surgery area if she can reach it.

Good luck and well wishes tonight. Let us know how she's doing.

Provide her with a lumpy bed. Pouch on floor of cage. Maybe clipped or propped open. She will find a comfy way to sleep. Be sure she gets some food and a drink. You may have to tilt a dish so she can reach inside.

How high up did they amputate her hind leg. If it real high you may be able to use a e-jacket.

Can you post a picture of her surgery site?
