WARNING: "Barrel of Monkeys" toy and CHEWERS!

WARNING: "Barrel of Monkeys" toy and CHEWERS! - 03/17/05 01:20 AM

MODS: I couldn't decide whether to post here, or in Behavior and Anatomy.

This evening I was cleaning Sugi's cage and cleaned up his monkey mess (he loves to fling his little monkey toys everywhere, and he hides some in his pouch). I was washing everything down when I noticed Sugi has been chewing on the "point" where the little plastic monkey's hands would be.

I took the scissors and cut off the rough stuff, and it occurred to me that these little toys COULD become a choking hazard for gliders who like to chew.

For now, the monkey toys are in good condition, so I'll let him play with them, but I thought I should just post in case anyone else has a little gnawing monster like my Sugi.

Just a reminder to check all toys, pouches, and stuff for any potential dangers. I'd love to have a reptarium (since my spring break is coming up, and I want to take a road trip), but I think Sugi would waste one within a half hour... he's such a feisty little furball!

my guys knaw on the hands of monkies a little and I've had to clip some hands to keep them safe; but my guys spent a month in a reptarium and had no problem... never chewed on it; and believe me, I checked it every single day to make sure they hadn't!

so you might be ok using it even w/ a chewer

Like Faery, I've had a little guy, Oscar, in a reptarium for a very long time now and he once gnawed up a toy soldier in one night. Needless to say he didn't get any more toy soldiers just in case, but he's never chewed his rept. If you suspect at all, though, that yours would I think it's wise that you're going with another cage to be safe....not to mention to save you from wasting your moolah.

Thank you for the heads up about the monkeys.

We made ours a tent toy-noticed the same thing and that a couple of those points were very close to having a piece come off. Having had a glider die of an intestinal blockage/perforation (not related to the monkeys) and what pain he was in, I think with a chewer supervision is a good idea-to be safe.

Thanks for the warning regarding these toys. I will have to snip these when I get home tonight.

My lil ones were doing the EXACT same thing so i restricted them to only being played with in the tent. Better safe than sorry
