Wodent wheel pin danger? - 09/16/06 05:23 PM
I have a wodent wheel for each of my gliders and they absolutely love them. However, I've been concerned about the pins holding the glider wheel together (the one on the outside of the wheel you have to remove to take the wheel apart, if that makes sense) because I think my gliders have managed to get their patagiums scratched by the pin with their wheel antics. They like to go from riding on the inside to gripping the outside of the wheel, and I think they are managing to scratch up their wing membranes on the pin...I can't think of anything else in their cages that would cause the injuries to their patagiums.
The scratches aren't very serious, no blood or gaping holes or anything, but I can see small slices of hair missing from a couple of thin slices of their patagiums. I debated on bringing them to the vets but haven't as of yet because I didn't think the vet would be able to do anything for the scratches (they wouldn't require any stitches, it's not an area you could bandage, my gliders are using the membrane and are not in pain, and I am monitoring it closely for infection).
Anyways, the point of all this is does anybody have any ideas on what I can use to cover up that pin so my gliders are not getting scratched up? I am worried they might injure themselves more seriously (I remember seeing a thread on here about problems with that pin where the glider had some serious holes in the patagium). I tried those little plastic backs to dangly earrings and slid them on, thought that would work but upon cleaning cages today I found them missing (and now I'm worried as to where they went!!!)
Any ideas to make my wodent wheels safe would be greatly appreciated. I think they're a great product but I might be buying other wheels soon unless I can make these ones safe <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worried2.gif" alt="" />
