New Wheel

New Wheel - 11/17/05 08:15 PM

I rescued a 3 year old female glider that I thought was SM because she was missing hair and had sores/bruses on the last inch of her tail. Given her care before this didn't suprize me so I got her on a good food and have been working with her and it has helped. However I am beginging to think her wheel might be the proublem. I was watching her run in her wheel (a hamster car) and noticed that the end of her tail hangs out and hits on the frame while she is running so I took out the wheel and am looking for a new one. Any suggestions? It also needs to be very quiet since her cage is kept in my room and I don't want to be kept up all night by a squeeky radely wheel. I have heard so many things about whats good and whats not that I am soo Thanks in advance.

Definetely (DEFINETELY!!!) get the stealth wheel!

It is a little expensive but it's well worth the money. We have 2 wodent wheels and 3 stealths- and only the stealths are allowed in the bedroom

I personally think wodents are a waste of money when you can get a stealth for like another $15 or so.

PLEASE do NOT let her use the hamster car! That very well could be the problem. Has she been to the vet? She probably needs an antibiotic. (It could be infected or itching her) I also use Wodent Wheels and the gliders LOVE them

When we put our kid's Wodent Wheels in their cages...we put a drop of vegetable oil on the rod...that was almost a year ago..they are right smack next to my bed and we've NEVER heard one sound from the wheels.

I have to add in my vote for the Stealth wheel. They really are the best. However, if cost is a factor and your are a little crafty, there is a thread with directions to make a stealth clone. I have made several of them and they are great. NOT as good as the REAL Stealths but better and more quiet then any other I have tried.

Re: New Wheel - 11/18/05 12:40 AM

What is the real difference between the two wheels? Other than one is totally open? ..and more expensive. I've never had any problems.

Re: New Wheel - 11/18/05 12:47 AM

Well- with the wodent- all their pee & poo stays in the wheel and starts to get stinky where as with the stealth it falls through.

The stealth is completely silent, both wodents we have can get really loud. I've tried the veggie oil and it never has done any good for me

The wodent has to be taken completely apart to be properly cleaned, which to me means more parts to take off, lose, then try and put back together. I just put our stealths in the sink or tub and scrub it with soap and water- then rinse. I think it's impossible to thoroughly clean the wodent without taking it apart.

Also since it's totally open you can see them run in it much better. I think they can go around in the wodent but with the stealth they can hang on and go around a lot more. The most we've ever seen Jupiter go around was 8!

I have made my stealth clones and it took me about 10 minutes to assemble since I had the right tools. I have pics if you would like?

Re: New Wheel - 11/18/05 12:59 AM

hmmm...well don't laugh..LOL Hubby cleans the wheels. He gets home from work late so I haven't seen them being cleaned. One night, I get up and walked into the bathroom and saw all this stuff in my tub. I got mad at him...he said it was the wheels..I said the what? He said yea, the wodent wheels have to come apart to be cleaned. I yelled at him cause I didn't think he should have taken them apart...oops!

Okay...since the pee and poopies fall through the Stealth wheel..is there anything like a screen or something they could catch nails on? I think I'll get one for Grace then.

Re: New Wheel - 11/18/05 01:17 AM

Yep there is a sand paper that can be added to the out side of the stealth… and it only covers a small area so stuff still falls through….

***** Sara … he he I agree with you, and very well answered…..

You know the material Kayla (and everyone else) is using to make toys? The mesh they run on is similar to that- although it's not the same... I don't know what it is. But no, they can't (that I can forsee) get their nails caught on anything.

You won't regret buying the stealth & then you'll see what I'm talking about.... and think about all that extra time your hubby will have to dote on you!

Re: New Wheel - 11/18/05 01:46 AM

i am glead with my crittertrail.
it actualy a hamstercage, but for my gliders it is perfect.

No poo or other yakkie stuff stays in the cage and is collected in a littelbox benith it, so you can trough it away.
it is also big inough for more gliders, i think when they real want they can run with 4 (with 3 they do!!).
so you can imagin it a realy big wheel.
a cage how is less silent i don't know.
and it is gliderproof.
they can't fall of it or get stuck with there tail.
i's real fun to see when they are running en clung to it so they make spin (first i found it sorry for them, but i noticed that they lik it).
It has also room for a hous, feedingbowl, and a drinkcan. (all included)

Re: New Wheel - 11/18/05 01:56 AM

I used to have a crittertrail, it worked pretty well. It was a little small so I got a silent spinner. I'm going to get a couple WW for X-mas for them(me personaly, I would feel better if the wheel was a closed one)

Sarah..yes! The kids have some of Kayla's things Never a problem with them. I'll get Grace the Stealth wheel..but now what? The other kids will want one too! LOL

How can you make these? The clones?

Re: New Wheel - 11/18/05 02:23 AM

One thing I did to make my wodent bearable was to put that mesh stuff in it. I'll attach a pic for ya.

It was kind of hard to do- and the mesh can't really be cut the exact size (width) but it all still works, the wheel is just a smidge harder to turn but they can still run it. Also, I definetely am not taking the wodent apart now that I got the mesh in there! It was too hard & I don't wanna have to redo it, so I just clean it like the stealth and get in the mouse holes as best as I can

I've never made a clone! But at least that's something you can do with your wodents if you want!

Edit: I always forget to attach the pic!

Re: New Wheel - 11/18/05 04:49 AM

Ok stupid question. But what is the difference between the stealth Xtream and the stealth kit? Is it just that you have to assemble the kit? Which is better? Ok several stupid questions but please bear with me you guys are helping me and my little ones out soo much! *thank you*

Re: New Wheel - 11/18/05 03:45 PM

yes- the stealth kit is self assembly.. also the stands are different.. and the extreme is height adjustable...

I love our stealths- I fill the tub with very hot soapy water, let them lay in it and soak while I clean the cages, then go back and stand upright and spray with the hose to rinse thouroughly and it gets all the gunk off with no scrubbing and no taking anything apart!

Thanks for all the help I just ordered my stealth. I can't wait to get it! Maybe I will actually get to sleep through the night without a radly wheel waking me up! Tanks again from me and my furry kids
