toilet ladder?

toilet ladder? - 05/29/11 10:23 PM

I was wondering how you make a toilet ladder and if they actually work? I am very good about keeing the lid down but my fiance tends to forget and in the event he ever did escape if there are any precautions I could take to help him I would like to make sure I do. My baby is my whole world and I just want to make sure he is safe!

Toilet ladders can be made out of several things...it could be several 1/4" PVC tubes strung together with Rexlace. I got several from Elena at her "goodbye sale": hers are made out of 3/4" square coated wire & would be VERY EASY to clean as needed. The wire is bendable to fit over the rim. (I plan to bring them to the SGGA to sell and send the proceeds to her, along with a couple other "things" grin )

To answer the question of whether or not they'd work, use a little imagination here. Your glider falls into the toilet and is paddling to keep his/her head above the water. What would he/she grab ahold of to get out without having a toilet ladder?

Here's something else to make you look at the world from a different perspective: I used to keep a gallon jug of water in the gliders' room for filling their water bottles...one day I came home from a gathering and heard an odd scratching sound...turns out one of my joeys had fallen into the jug which I was EXTREMELY FORTUNATE had only an inch of water in it..... upset Not ALL water threats are in the bathroom! worried

Yea I am becoming increasingly aware of thisb lol, along with the fact that not allb threats are water. I guess we will be making a ladder just to be on the safe side! Does anybody have instructions for how to make them that u could pm me?

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 02:55 AM

I have never heard of a toilet ladder before. This is most likely just a stupid question but do you leave it in all the time. Or drop it in when a glider falls into the toilet? Strange the things we so for our fuzbutts.

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 02:57 AM

You would keep it in all the time. I want to make one, my 20 year old son keeps leaving the lid up. shakehead

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 03:00 AM

LOL - OK this made me giggle! There are no stupid questions, just questions that need to be answered. If you see your glider in the toilet, please scoop him/her out immediately! No ladder needed!

These "ladders" stay in the bowl all the time. I use a 1/2" x 1/2" green coated wire mesh from the local hardware store, bent to fit over the rim, and an inch or so above the water level. Gliders can swim, but they will eventually drown.

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 03:07 AM

It seems like a good idea to me, its just weird to think about it being in the potty all the time, cause the water goes round and round.
The things i'm visualizing are horrifying!!! I am not cleaning that!!! ew.
Though its a wonderful idea!!!
I would like to see one in the potty bowl to see how it looks

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 03:13 AM

How.... how does it get cleaned? We leave the seats down and bathroom doors closed and play in my bedroom with the door closed. How often do these get replaced? I just.. I just feel like after a night of spicey foods, drinking, or stomach flu it would be a horrifying sight... yuck.

I have heard of these, I just never used one/never saw one. And am getting some pretty gross visuals.

oh me too! Is anyone currently using one. If so can you please post a pic?

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 03:18 AM

Yeah, I know what you're thinking Dizzy.....and I agree with your EWWWWW!!!! shakehead

Let's amend the 24/7 concept to maybe read "when you're not already occupying it" (that helps a little?) and the material that Elena's is made out of sounds just like what you described Nancy. I'll let YOU furnish the visual aids here. (I'm still working on potty training around my house...or at least still TRYING roflmao )

Trust me Ssuver, I wouldn't care WHAT's in the toilet if a glider falls in......I'd be fishing him/her out PRETTY DOGGONE QUICKLY and not looking for the Playtex gloves first! cry

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 03:18 AM

OK... here is the visual! Now don't be too critical, I haven't cleaned the toilet in a few days. blush I just spray it down with bathroom cleaner every week or so. If it gets nasty, just replace it. I'd rather have this than a drowned glider. My daughter and I are pretty used to putting the lid down, but visitors, not so much even though we have a sign.

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 03:25 AM

Ok dumb question but how do they get out if the lid is down over it?

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 03:26 AM

I would have no problems sticking my hand into ANYTHING to get my gliders out, but I guess I just pictured something MUCH worse than that LOL. We started keeping toilets down and bathroom doors closed about.. 10 years ago because of our cat & dog. The cat fell in the toilet all the time because she loved batting at the water, and the dog(s) like to open up the trash can and dump everything everywhere (if there was stuff in it). Plus like I said before, they're in my bedroom when we play.

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 03:28 AM

Thank you for the visual it does help. and it is such a great idea. Better safe than sorry. I too would put my hand in the pot for one of my gliders. So worries here.

I had a scare just this morning. That is why I am asking. My daughter apparently tried to play with them before we got up this morning (even though she knows that they are off limits).

Anyway I got up this morning made my way to the bathroom still groggy because it was only 5:30am. and as I am sitting on the pot. Max my boy lands on my head.

Let me tell you it just about scared me to death. Funny enough as soon as my heart beat slowed down all I could think about was that the potty seat was up.

We do play time in the bathroom and there are toys (and I am sure stray yoggies) So I think that is what he was after. He climbed the shower curtain and went onto one of the fleece vines which he apparently laid in weighting until an appealing victim came into view. lol

But I ramble. Thank you for this idea. I will be implementing it in my house. I wonder if I can find some white wire...

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 03:32 AM

I don't know if they can get out of the potty, but at least they can get out of the water. and depending on where you placed it. I think a person would notice an animal in the toilet when they went to relieve themselves.

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 03:33 AM

If the lid is DOWN, then there are NO WORRIES....the space between the porcelain base and the lid is pretty small. If I had small joeys, I'd be VERY worried & would probably adjust the ladder so it's almost level with the water.

What's important to note here is that a glider has something to grab onto so they can get out of the water....which gives them a MUCH BETTER chance of surviving.

If the lid was down, they wouldn't be able to get into the toilet. This is for those times when the lid is accidentally left up and the glider falls in.

Again, no dumb questions here! Hopefully if the lid is down, they won't fall into the bowl. If they do manage to maneuver under the lid, the ladder can keep them out of the water and from drowning until they are rescued.

Totally meant the seat, not the lid. I sit to pee. wink

Even with the seat down, if the ladder is in place, they can at least get out of the water.

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 08:55 AM

Signs are helpful too. My mom has a terrible habit of leaving the lid up. I HATE it.
She came over the other day and went to the restroom. When she came out of the bathroom I asked her if she put the lid down and she says 'Yep. I saw the sign and closed it'.
She told me after that at first she thought the sign was ridiculous, but after thinking about it (all while going potty) she realized how necessary it is, especially since I've had my fair share of escapees. roflmao

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 05:07 PM

That sticker is too cute! We currently live with my parentsso the only toilet I'm worried about is the one in our bedroom because heis NEVER outside of our bedroom without me but if he did happn to spring loose from his cage one day (though I doubt it would ever happen) I would just like to rest assured that all precautions have been taken! That visual helped a lot cuz I was envisionin like a handmade mini rope ladder lol and I was like I have no idea ho to mke one smile doing the wire mesh is much simpler, I will be getting some this week to place in there! Thanks for all the input, sometimes it is rlly scary being a new mommy bcuz I'm always scared that something I don't know will lead to him getting hurt.

Re: toilet ladder? - 05/30/11 09:26 PM

Megan,
The point of the toilet sign is to have ALL lids closed, and remind the users to close the lids, regardless of if the gliders are allowed in that area of the house or not.
My gliders aren't allowed out of their cages without me but tell them that if I accidentally forget a door open in the cage. lol

Shelly,
That's the poster I have. I printed it off of Suz's site and put it in a protector and taped it above the toilet on the wall.

Re: toilet ladder? - 06/01/11 05:33 AM

Living proof toilet ladders are a necessity with furr butts I lost my zena that exact way last night the one time I forgot to close a door and no you potty being on the opposite end of your home does not make a difference once again I discovered this last night as well and you best believe I combed my entire home to reinforce glider safety including lofty sink and vent ladders don't think I could handle another situation like my xena drowning

Re: toilet ladder? - 06/01/11 06:09 AM

I keep mine in a seperate locked room so people cant accidentally hurt them or they escape and get hurt in addition to a secure cage. and it gives me a safe place to play with them =). though I know not alot of people have an extra room for that so sticky and ladder your toilets and secure your cages, they are escape artist

Gliders can still squeeze under doors.
