Sugar Ant Season

Sugar Ant Season - 04/13/08 03:41 PM

Okay. So every year my house is explored by tiny black sugar ants that somehow get in the house. Christopher's cage was in another room last summer and we moved him several months ago into a different room. While just this morning I noticed that the little buggers have discovered his food bowl. There arent a lot of them. It just makes me worried about him maybe eating one just cause it moves.

If it's in his cage he's going to attempt to eat it. The first time he discovered Monkeys in a Barrel, he grabbed a monkey and sniffed it all over to see if it was edible and then dropped it when he realized it wasnt.

Back on topic. Any ideas on how to keep the ants away from his food bowl?

Try placing Bounce fabric sheets around the perimeter of the cage (on the floor mind you). The ants hate them. They HAVE to be Bounce tho!

also, if the cage is on a stand and it has legs, try placing each leg in a very shallow dish of water (even shallow will be a LAKE to an ant!) once the legs are in the water, the ants won't be able to get to the legs to crawl up into the cage! Hope these help! smile

I'm having that problem now and they've invaded ONE cage, I'm taking the food bowl (with ants) out and leaving in the sink every morning and wiping down the shelf and the bars - I've put ant traps around the outside of the cage but that doesn't seem to help - I'll have to go and invest in some bounce sheets - worth a try!

My cage is on rollers. When I found we had ants, after cleaning the cage and getting rid of them, I put a bounce sheet under each of the rollers. I haven't seen a single ant since (it's been about 2 weeks). Hope it keeps working! It is an easy cheap fix!

Just a little update for those interested - I had ants in just one cage - every morning I would come out and the BML bowl would be full of the little buggers - I tried the Bounce sheets like Taylynn suggested and she was so RIGHT!! I haven't had a single ant in days - not since I took the sheets and put them all around the outside bottom of the cage - my hubby thought I was crazy but it does work!! thumb

Re: Sugar Ant Season - 05/01/08 07:16 PM

i heard from a glider breeder who is pretty knowledgable (sp) that the smell of the bounce sheets are bad for gliders cuz i have ants massivly bad and i put 1 or 2 in between the pages of newspaper that line there cage. it keeps the ants away so far but is the smell safe...I dont have legs on my cage so i cant put the sheets around the legs any answers?

Re: Sugar Ant Season - 05/07/08 08:45 PM

My house is built on a sand mound and every year when the weather gets warmer, the little ants come a-crawling. They are everywhere and i feel like there is no stopping them. I read this post and decided to try the bounce sheets. I wrapped them around the legs of my computer desk, hoping the ants weren't going to climb up anymore. Though they have decreased, i still see a couple of them running around on top of my desk here and there. I'm thinking they are running up the wall and/or climbing up the wires... I don't know what to do to make them completely go away. I am worried that when i bring home my sugar gliders that there will be an ant problem in their cage too, considering their cage will be going on my computer room. I told my landlord that its a serious problem in here and he said he would have an exterminator come by and spray, but because i have a dog, he'll only spray outside the house. This isn't going to solve my problem and it drives me crazy. Maybe i am doing something wrong with the bounce sheets? Should i just lay them on the floor under the legs of my desk? and what do i do about the wires from my computer? Any suggestions?

Re: Sugar Ant Season - 05/07/08 11:38 PM

We've always used borax and powdered sugar to kill sugar ants. But I'm wondering if it'd be okay to use now that I have the gliders...

The mixture is 1/4 cup of confectioner's sugar to 1 tablespoon Borax. It won't kill the ants immediately, so they take it back to their colony...which kills the entire colony in about ten days. It's very effective.

As long as I make sure the gliders can't get to it, this should be fine to keep using, right? The bounce sheets never seemed to work in my house...and we've never had a problem using this with the cats and dogs.

problem is at this point i can't tell where they are coming from. what do you do with this borax and sugar, sprinkle it around or should i leave a small pile of it in a corner somewhere?

Ants won't cross over salt either.

With the borax, we just sprinkle it around wherever we're finding them. If they're getting up on tables...around the legs and anything else that might lead up to the table...if it's on the counter tops, we sprinkle it around the bottom of the cabinets and in the corners of the counters. You could also sprinkle some around the edge of the room if they keep coming. But generally, wherever you leave it they'll be attracted to it thanks to the sugar.
