tkreth - I keep checking too! When I spoke with Mary she said they would post when they returned from the vet. I'm sure they will do so soon - keep positive thoughts for that wee one!

Re: What about Baby from MS? - 07/17/03 10:24 PM

Spent a lot of time at the vet with Baby today. The x-rays showed a seperation of the spine right behind the shoulder blades. It has already started to heal about a week ago. Will take another two or three weeks to heal. The muscle mass in that area will keep it in place as long as we do not allow him to become too active. The x-rays showed the density of the bone structure to be a little weak but not light enough to cause HLP. However the weakened bone structure was probably a contributing factor in the spinal seperation. She also said that he would probably never have use of his hind legs again. The objective at present is to heal the spine. This will not repair the nerve damage. After
the spine is healed we will try trating him further with steriods. These have been very succesful in treatment of dogs and cats. They will help strengthen his muscles. Also we want him to live pain free. We are still giving the Baytril for the infection on his feet and treating with the Silvadine ointment. We have cleared up his BM by giving him Peadilite and water. This morning he was very active. I had him out on the kitchen table and gave him a piece of pecan. He grabbed it and scooted under a snuggle blanket to hide and eat it. He is very alert, his eyes are bright and he does not show any signs of having pain. Just in case we got a new bottle of Torb. Melissa, we also got a new dose of the Baytril just to be sure it is the proper strength for him.
For the time, we are going to keep him in the small 12X12 cage. This to keep him from moving around too much before he is healed. Once the spine is healed, I am going to make him a cage with a lot of floor space but not much height. The floor will be padded so he can move around without injuring himself. He has captured both of our hearts. It's just amazing to see how much spunk the little guy has for the condition he is in. Mary will be back with more later. Right now she is up to her elbows in glider food.

I was so worried talking to both you, and Melissa, that Baby was in very, very bad shape. You guys are, without a doubt, the most wonderful, caring, giving, loving glider parents there ever was!!!!! You are both Angels!!! Glider Angels at that!!!

Mary,

I am glad that there is hope for Baby. I sort of expected that he would lose the use of his hind legs. But I am so pleased to hear all of the positive progress that you are making with him. Keep me posted, and I will try to call you tonight.

P.S. The little toy that he plays with - the hide and seek pouch thingy that you brought - it was the favorite toy of the daughter that I lost and was telling you about. That is very special that he likes that so much.

Many hugs

Re: What about Baby from MS? - 07/18/03 01:58 AM

Mary,

Did the vet say anything about the extent of the infection in his paws or the sore on his side? The places all looked better after just one day of putting the creme on that you suggested...definite miracle workers.

Also, what did he say would cause a spinal separation? I may have already asked that. If so, just forgive me....I have a hard time remembering my name sometimes!

Talk to you soon.

Re: What about Baby from MS? - 07/18/03 02:27 AM

Melissa...please don't let all this make you feel bad. You did
the very best you knew to do and not having a vet who knows
about gliders, worked against you. You did your best by contacting people to help and finding a place for Baby to go
where vets know about gliders. We know that you love Baby and want him to make it and you did the best you could...I
still think you are a champ and we love ya...
Lucy...John...all of you...we have done nothing that the rest of you wouldn't have done if faced with it. We all love
the gliders and we all want to help them. Charlie and I just
happened to be the lucky ones on this round.
Since he has to stay in the small cage for 3 weeks until
his back heals...Charlie is building him a special cage and
we are going on a hunt for things to put in it that will
entertain him and yet can't hurt him. He is a little toughie
and he goes all over...he is eating good and we are not yet
giving up hope for his future. We still want to have a little buddy for him when he has healed on the outside.
No...right now we don't know what all lies ahead for him...
but as I have already said...we are not giving up the fight
for him to be happy...

Mary, what causes a separation of the spine?

Re: What about Baby from MS? - 07/20/03 02:10 AM

poor diet is what caused weak bones. Mary is the best person baby could be with to make her well again. I just wish there were more people like Mary out there.

Re: What about Baby from MS? - 07/20/03 02:16 AM

...tkreth...
Not getting the calcium and the body sucking it from the bones
...the bones weaken and the least little thing can break them.
In this case...it was the spine up close to the shoulder blades. He will never be normal again...but he is a fighter.
He's having to deal with the shape he's in...a new home...
trips to the vet...a change in diet and while it's hard for
him he taking it better than I probably could.
He weighed 77 grams when he came...this morning he weighed
82 grams...he is eating good.
We don't know how it's going to turn out...but we are going to do everything in our power to make it good.
Thank you for your concern...this little boy needs all he can get. We've been faced with some heartbreaking situations
...but this one tops them all...
