Marky has Lymphoma

Marky has Lymphoma - 06/14/11 07:19 AM

Hello everyone. My name is Tommy. I have 2 gliders, Marky (apprx. 9) and Moe (apprx. 8). I am new to GliderCentral and recently read a very touching but sad forum from 2008 about a glider named Fawkes owned by Gina username "Monster". The forum topic was about Fawkes bout with cancer. I was unable to locate any posts regarding the final outcome, however the last posts I read did not look good as Gina mentioned she was preparing to have Fawkes put to sleep.
Apprx. 2 weeks ago I discovered Marky had a large hard lump on his right side near his neck. The lump seemed to materialize overnight leaving me in shock. I took Marky to the ER where an ultrasound was performed. I was advised the lump could be cancerous and was provided Baytril to see if it would decrease the size of the lump in the event it was just some type of infection. A few days later I took Marky to his vet (Dr. Castro in FL, who, by the way, is phenominal). Dr. Castro advised she wanted to remove the mass from Marky, however it was too large at that point making it a very dangerous surgical procedure. Dr.Castro gave me more Baytril to give Marky for a few days to see if it would help the size of the lump decrease. I took him in for his follow-up a few days later. The lump was still about the same size and Dr.Castro advised she wanted to go ahead and remove the mass. The surgery was performed successfully and Marky's incision was stitched and glued. I took Marky home later that evening with some oral pain meds. I was up all night monitoring Marky and his condition. I fell asleep for a few hours and woke to a horrible discovery. Marky's incision was wide open and I could see all inside the wound. I believe he scratched at it until the stitches broke. I immediately rushed him back to Dr.Castro who re-stitched and glued the incision. I took Marky home a few hours later. Everything was fine that night and the following day and the wound seemed to be healing well. I woke up the following morning and discovered the incision open again. I immediately took Marky back to Dr.Castro. (Just to back up a moment here, after the mass was removed it was sent to a lab for analysis.) When I arrived Dr.Castro met me in the lobby and was very upset. She told me the lab results were back and that the mass was cancer (Lymphoma). Dr.Castro glued the incision only, and decided against more stitches. She told me Marky would eventually need to be put to sleep. I was devastated to say the least. I felt hopeless. I took Marky home and cried.
This was Friday afternoon June 10. It is now 3 am June 14. Marky is healing well and the glue seems to have been very effective. I have not noticed any other lumps on his body. Marky is acting almost completely normal and showing no signs of being sick. He is eating,drinking,peeing/pooping, and even playing. The only thing I've noticed is he seems nervous lately when I hold him, but I think it is simply due to the fact he has been through so much lately, not to mention I have been giving him oral pain meds he absolutely hates. I refuse to give up on him or accept the negative diagnosis. I've read some posts and other articles about vitamin E, Immuny II (??), Prendisone, and even chemo. treatments. My research has given me hope but I am trying to be realistic. I am so desparate for any advice anyone may have to offer.
Please, anyone who may have any information...I would be forever grateful. I would also be interested to know what ever happened with poor little Fawkes.
I am very sorry this post is so lengthy, I am just hoping someone might read this and offer some advice.
Thank you so much in advance for any help. I love my little buddy so much and don't want to lose him. Moe and I would be so lost without him.

Tommy, I am so sorry that you and Marky are going through this. We had a member on here who went through a similar situation (although Leukemia) with his glider Rommy. I suggest that send a PM to Josh, screen name (romulusandremus). He has done extensive research while he was going through this and will be able to help you.

Here is the tread about Sweet Rommy

Don't give up hope, stay positive. hug2 If it has not spread and they were able to remove the lump, you still have hope. We will keep Marky in our prayers. I am moving this to Health & Hygiene for you where you will get better response. There are other members who have experienced this and will come along to give you advice. hug2

Hi Tommy, Sounds like you love your boy very much, Yes Fawkes died. I had my Rocky years ago that had a lump like you mentioned removed and he lasted for about a month and then One morning he was wetting all over himself and dragging his back legs, I took him in and an xray revealed he had tumors allover his bones, I loved him so much I let him go to the rainbow bridge. I have had other gliders with same types of lumps not removed and those gliders are doing well and have for many months. Look up Darcys diet in the diet section here

I hope Marky beats the odds!

Oh I am so sorry about your baby, I know how aweful you must be feeling right now but there are treatments for animals with cancer (grantd they are very expensive and sometimes difficult) they are sometimes possible so see if you can get any of those. I will pray for your little guy, good luck!!!

Tommy~ I am so sorry to hear about Marky!! When our babies get sick it is one of the worst things in the world! I went through cancer with one of my labs. It still is painful to think of years later but I know she will meet me at the Rainbow Bridge.

Re: Marky has Lymphoma - 06/16/11 06:39 AM

Thank you all so much for your thoughts, prayers, and suggestions! I am so happy to say Marky is still doing just fine. He is eating normally and is so active. I spoke to Dr.Castro today by phone. When I told her how well Marky was doing she could hardly believe it. I think she fully expected and feared it was all downhill for him. She told me she hopes maybe she got the tumor out before the cancer spread. Hopefully my observation and quick response (and our angel Dr.Castro) saved him. She suggested I check into shark cartilage for Marky. I will keep everyone updated.
Thanks again everyone!

Tommy, thank you for the update, sounds great! That was what I was hoping for right from the start, that they removed the entire tumor and nothing got a chance to spread. You deserve a pat on the back for your observation and quick response.

Still sending prayers that all will work out fine for Marky. hug2

I am so sorry that he was diagnosed with Cancer. I sure hope, like Dr. Castro said, that she got it before it had the chance to spread.

Sending healing thoughts to your little one!

Re: Marky has Lymphoma - 06/25/11 06:33 AM

Thank you to everyone who has prayed for Marky and offered support and suggestions. I apologize I have been unable to keep everyone updated. I am going through my own health issues and haven't had the opportunity to log onto my computer lately. I am taking very good care of Marky. I discovered a lump on his right side near his neck, so I'm concerned the cancer did in fact spread. I noticed it a few days ago. It has not grown, however I have been keeping a close eye on it. Marky still seems to be feeling okay, so that is a good sign. I will get back on here and update as soon as I can. In the mean time I will continue to take good care of my baby boy. Thank you all so much for everything! I am so glad to have you all to share with!

Have you been in contact with the members offering their help?

Re: Marky has Lymphoma - 07/05/11 05:12 PM

Hello everyone. Once again I apologize for not keeping those of you who have offered your prayers, support, and suggestions updated on Marky's condition as often as I would like to. I am so devastated to announce that my baby boy's battle with cancer officially ended today at approximately 10:45 am ET. The cancer was spreading so rapidly around his neck up near his head. I could see in his eyes that he simply had no fight left in him. I had to make the most difficult decision in what I felt was best for him. I kissed his little head, said goodbye and I love him, and left him with his angel, Dr Castro. Now Moe and I are left with the bitterest memories and emptiness of our best buddy. I know I did everything I could, and that my decision today was the right one, but I am so sad he is gone. RIP free of pain my baby boy. *Marky: 2002-2011*
If anyone has any advice for helping a glider cope with the loss of a lifelong friend I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you all.

Re: Marky has Lymphoma - 07/05/11 05:35 PM

Oh Tommy, I'm so very sorry to hear about your loss of Marky. There are no words, I know...but please know that you and Moe are in my thoughts. hug2

Moe will now need a good bit of attention (which I know you already give) - lots of treats, lots of cuddles and I don't know if it's even possible, but if he's able to see Marky one last time, that would help him tremendously.

I'm not sure of Moe's personality or demeanor but even though they were lifelong mates, he would benefit greatly (when your heart lets you) from another buddy to cuddle with. It may take him a bit of time to get used to another, your intros may or may not take a bit longer, but I do believe it would be the best thing for him.

Good luck...and again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Re: Marky has Lymphoma - 07/05/11 10:10 PM

Tommy,

I am sorry to hear that you had to make that difficult decision to help your beloved Marky over the Rainbow Bridge.

May you find comfort in your many memories of him.

Glide Free Little Marky :rbridge:

Did you allow Moe to say goodbye to Marky's body, it allows him to know that he is gone. Spend more time with him, even if it is just carrying him in a bonding pouch.

Again, I am very sorry for your loss.

I just recently lost our kitty to lymphoma. We held on as long as we could but I feel blessed that we had him the year we did. I have to say it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. Still is. It breaks my heart that any one has to go through that and I am so very sorry for you loss.

Re: Marky has Lymphoma - 07/06/11 12:42 AM

Thank you all so much. Your thoughts are prayers are wonderful and I am grateful for the support. Just looked through all the pictures of Marky on my phone and cried uncontrollably. I am so hurt I cannot even put my feelings into words. Poor Moe was frantic searching for his best buddy from the moment we left the vet and for about 2 hours after we got home. I've never seen him so upset. It was heartbreaking. He finally settled in the pouch around my neck. He is taking mealworms, crickets, treats etc from my hand, but otherwise has just been curled up and quiet. I can tell when I look at him how sad he is. This experience has been especially difficult since I only had the 2 of them. Of course I'm giving him plenty of love and attention, but its just not the same.
Anyhow, I just hope for better days. Bless you all.

Re: Marky has Lymphoma - 07/06/11 12:33 PM

Tommy, it's hard to let go of someone that you love so dearly, but when they hurt so terribly, then peace is the last gift you can give them.

Fly Free Marky

THE RAINBOW BECKONS

In loving memory of my angels who have crossed over the rainbow bridge

The rainbow has beckoned
It’s calling you home
To meadows and forest
In which you may roam

My heart it grows heavy
To think you might leave
I’d be all alone then
Alone then to grieve

I know deep inside me
That you cannot stay
The pain that you’re feeling
Grows more night and day

You look at me asking
In your silent way
To let you go home now
“Please let me” you say

You say there’s no pain there
No fear and no hate
Just peace and well being
Once you’re through the gate

You tell me you’ll always
Hold me in your heart
That time and that distance
Can’t keep us apart

And if I should need you
At my side you’ll be
Tho I cannot see you
You’ll be there with me

You promise to wait at
the rainbow for me
To wait `til I join you
Together to be

I just want to hold you
And beg you to stay
To ask please don’t leave me
Alone on this day

Yet deep in my heart know
I must let you go
You must make the journey
now to the rainbow

I bow down my head then
The tears fill my eyes
I give you my blessing
My love now to fly

So fly to the rainbow
And wait there for me
Some day I will join you
Together to be
