A long time

A long time - 08/10/04 11:42 AM

It's been a long time (almost a year) since I've started a post here, but we lost Portia this morning. When I woke up and went in to say hello to everyone, I didn't see Portia, so I opened the cage, and she was lying on one of the shelves, still alive, but barely. We immediately tried to get pedialite into her, but her mouth was clenched shut, and we didn't have any luck. I knew it was too late to make it to any vet, so we just held her for a few minutes, and she was gone. I believe something must have been wrong with her liver, because her nose was very yellow, and by the time she passed, so were her feet. Her feet were pink at first, but in the 10 minutes she lasted, they became very yellow.

I will take her in for a post mortem today. Her cage mate seems fine--we checked him over thoroughly. Her last vet visit was in June, for a wellness check, and got a 'thumbs up' from our vet. Brutus, her mate, went to the vet at the same time.

These little folks hide their illness so well, that by the time we realize it, it's usually too late. I can't stress enough the importance of having regular wellness checks with a good vet.

Portia was 7 (almost 8) years old. Still, I know something was wrong because of the yellow nose. Maybe the liver gets involved once the dying process begins--I don't know, but I do know that we watched her feet go from pink to yellow--it happened very quickly.

I feel some comfort knowing that she didn't die alone. My husband and I were with her, and she passed away in Steve's cupped hands. We will miss her terribly. She was a sweet little girl.

Re: A long time - 08/12/04 11:54 AM

Thanks to all of you. Portia is with Dr. Thomas now. When she completes the necropsy, she will return Portia to us for burial in our little cemetery. When I learn the cause of death, I'll post.

Steve and I are okay, but I'm very worried about her mate, Brutus. He seems to be okay--certainly no signs of illness of any kind. He was in his wheel this morning, so that's encouraging. I worry so much about my gliders getting depressed when they lose their mates. Brutus seems to be okay, tho--his ears are up and so forth. I hope to find a friend for him soon.

Thanks again for all the support. Y'all are the BEST!
