Choking :-( - 06/24/02 09:53 PM

Well, Im freaked out now.

Ive been waiting and waiting on Mya's and Tony's baby to come out any day now, and if thats not stressful enough for me (cant sleep) wait till I tell you what happened saturday afternoon....

Saturday afternoon I had the "kids" in the kitchen with me for a snack as usual... I was standing there holding them in their cloth nest box and handed Mya a little treat then handed one to Tony...as usual Tony gets very excited if its something he really likes and shoves it in his mouth... I didnt even think twice about it.

I walked into the dining room and sat their nest box on the table and turned to talk to my husband for a sec as he was working on the computer. When I turned back around, I saw my precious boy sitting in the opening of his nest box with his tongue hanging completly out of his mouth and he was gasping and pawing at his mouth...
I went into emergency mode and I screamed "Oh my God! John help me!"...my husband turned and saw Tony gasping for air and he started to panic as well.

I had taken CPR classes etc for my daughter as an infant and I had also learned animal CPR etc. when I became a Vet tech. Which in the process I learned the heimlich maneuver.
I grabbed Tony out of the opening of his pouch and whacked him on the back....when I realized something had to be done because he wasnt getting air....I felt for his breast bone and with a finger started the heimlich...(My daughter and my husband stood by the table frozen not sure what to do.) After 3 quick upward jabs, Tony spit the food up and it flew all the way across the dining room table.
Then he took in a deep gasp of air and started breathing heavily...

My heart was beating so fast... I thought I was going to pass out, Im sure I was pale as a white sheet. I couldnt believe it!

If I hadnt been standing there with him I would never have caught it and he would have choked to death Im sure .
I sat with him for several hours afterwards and made sure that his breathing was normal and that he drank a little. I felt for broken ribs, sore spots, etc. (in case anything got hurt/broke from doing the heimlich.) Everything turned out fine.
I tried giving him another treat and he wasnt having any part of it...poor little guy! He did finally take a grape.

Afterwards after everything calmed down, I think I went into shock....and I cried and panicked. (Im pretty good in emergency situations and usually keep my head....afterwards is when I panic and say Oh my gosh what just happened?!!!)

I wasnt going to say anything, except now Im freaked out and REALLY cant sleep and check on the "kids" constantly throughout the night...I know, I know, like I can really keep it from happening if it should happen again and Im not there, but I am so worried... I cant stand it, his little face choking like that, and the look of fear on his little face...

Please, if you ever get the chance, take a CPR class, animal or human. It can save someones life... never know when you may need it! I certainly never dreamed of something like this happening! (and please never perform something like this on an animal (or human) unless your absolutly sure its needed and if your certain you know what your doing.)

Thanks for listening....

It is a good thing you knew CPR and the Heimlich Manuever. What was the treat that your glider was having trouble with? That would be a good thing for everyone to know as a precaution. I am just glad evering turned out alright for both of you. They do learn fast about what to eat and what not to eat. Thank goodness everything turned out OK.

Re: Choking :-( - 06/24/02 10:39 PM

I should have mentioned what it was he was eating... he was eating a tiny peanut butter flavored yogurt disc (about the size of a baby aspirin) that I had broken in fourths, which made it very tiny... They adore them...we call them Glider candy around here. Ive been giving them to them as an extra special treat for almost a year now with no problems. Their hard but once in the mouth for a few seconds or once chewed they are creamy and easily swallowed, like yogurt. He must have gotten a little too excited this time and shoved it so far in his mouth that it got stuck in his throat, or covered the opening to his windpipe. When it flew out of his mouth across the table, I picked it up and it was still whole and hard. I dont know how he managed to get it stuck like that, it was awful! Poor thing, his eyes were huge as he was gasping for air and pawing at his mouth...

Im almost afraid to go to sleep at night now, Im afraid him (or her!) might choke on somthing at dinner and I wont be there.

This happened to me once with my precious Bandit. He ended up getting a piece of a peanut stuck to the roof of his mouth. I FREAKED at first because I did not know what happened. Thank God my husband was home. When I realized what happened, he held Bandit and I got a softer plastic type toothpick and dislodged the peanut.

If any of you watch Animal Planet - Emergency Vet--- let's see what would those odds be!!! HA!!! -- a similar thing happened to a Hedgehog, but the owner had no idea. I don't know how long it had been there and they thought he had an abcess.

Thank God for your quick thinking,

Way to keep your cool there BMXgirl. I must say I'm impressed you managed to clear his airway without breaking him in the process. You did good. It is refreshing indeed to see someone stay calm and handle the problem at hand saving the panic and whiney feelings for afterward. You should seriously be proud and your gliders are luck to have you watching over them. I just hope no future problems creep up and test you again.

BMXGIRL: I'm an EMT and I don't know if I would have been able to perform like you did on my own pet. I'm certified to teach human CPR/First Aid/AED and am waiting to become certified to teach pet CPR/FIRST AID. I am SOOO HAPPY that you were there and your little guy will be OK...

That is AMAZING!!! I'm going to take animal CPR now I think. I've taken human. I don't know how you kept your cool. And I don't blame you for crying when it was all over, that was traumatic I'm sure. Congrats on an amazing job. Hope your little guy is doing well today and isn't sore or anything. Like said by others... I want to live next door to you too.

WOW!! BMX you are an amazing woman, I knew you could do cpr on a dog. But, I wouldn't have thought it was possible on a tiny glider. Let alone the heimlich!!

Re: Choking :-( - 07/04/02 01:23 PM

To all of you ... Thank you.

(Tony has been just fine... he seems to be a little more slow in cramming food in his mouth now... hehe, cant say I blame him.)

As for living next door to me... No way! I dont wanna have to EVER do something like this again...LOL. (Of course thats a joke, No I dont want to have to ever go through this again, but if I have to, of course I will.)

Oh Alice... I would love to explain the Heimlich to you... I encourage everyone to learn CPR (which always includes the Heimlich Manuever) If you ever get the chance to take CPR class, animal or human (pretty much the same principal, just a little difference sometimes), please do so! Ya never know when you might need it!

Oh Hope I'm so sorry!! But I'm glad to hear that little Tony is doing well now. I'm sure he knew that his Mom would save him and that's why he came out looking for you! Give him a chin rub and a kiss for me!
