Choking :-( - 06/24/02 09:53 PM
Well, Im freaked out now.
Ive been waiting and waiting on Mya's and Tony's baby to come out any day now, and if thats not stressful enough for me (cant sleep) wait till I tell you what happened saturday afternoon....
Saturday afternoon I had the "kids" in the kitchen with me for a snack as usual... I was standing there holding them in their cloth nest box and handed Mya a little treat then handed one to Tony...as usual Tony gets very excited if its something he really likes and shoves it in his mouth... I didnt even think twice about it.
I walked into the dining room and sat their nest box on the table and turned to talk to my husband for a sec as he was working on the computer. When I turned back around, I saw my precious boy sitting in the opening of his nest box with his tongue hanging completly out of his mouth and he was gasping and pawing at his mouth...
I went into emergency mode and I screamed "Oh my God! John help me!"...my husband turned and saw Tony gasping for air and he started to panic as well.
I had taken CPR classes etc for my daughter as an infant and I had also learned animal CPR etc. when I became a Vet tech. Which in the process I learned the heimlich maneuver.
I grabbed Tony out of the opening of his pouch and whacked him on the back....when I realized something had to be done because he wasnt getting air....I felt for his breast bone and with a finger started the heimlich...(My daughter and my husband stood by the table frozen not sure what to do.) After 3 quick upward jabs, Tony spit the food up and it flew all the way across the dining room table.
Then he took in a deep gasp of air and started breathing heavily...
My heart was beating so fast... I thought I was going to pass out, Im sure I was pale as a white sheet. I couldnt believe it!
If I hadnt been standing there with him I would never have caught it and he would have choked to death Im sure .
I sat with him for several hours afterwards and made sure that his breathing was normal and that he drank a little. I felt for broken ribs, sore spots, etc. (in case anything got hurt/broke from doing the heimlich.) Everything turned out fine.
I tried giving him another treat and he wasnt having any part of it...poor little guy! He did finally take a grape.
Afterwards after everything calmed down, I think I went into shock....and I cried and panicked. (Im pretty good in emergency situations and usually keep my head....afterwards is when I panic and say Oh my gosh what just happened?!!!)
I wasnt going to say anything, except now Im freaked out and REALLY cant sleep and check on the "kids" constantly throughout the night...I know, I know, like I can really keep it from happening if it should happen again and Im not there, but I am so worried... I cant stand it, his little face choking like that, and the look of fear on his little face...
Please, if you ever get the chance, take a CPR class, animal or human. It can save someones life... never know when you may need it! I certainly never dreamed of something like this happening! (and please never perform something like this on an animal (or human) unless your absolutly sure its needed and if your certain you know what your doing.)
Thanks for listening....
