Male gliders have a scent gland on their chest and when it secretes oils, it will look like a wet bald spot about the size you are talking about. Could you possible post pictures for us? We might be able to offer more help if we can see what you are talking about.

i will try to put a picture up in the next day or so, but i know about scent glands and this is a bigger area than that. he was at the vet for three days and they really didn't give a cause or what it is. so he's on three meds too try and see if he stops and heals. they ran blood work and x rays but didn't see anything that would cause this. when i got home tonight my two year old female glider kelly was not moving hardly and looked really bad so we took her to the after hours vet, she also has a bald patch on chest down to her belly ,sorry the vet just called and kelly passed away at 10:30 pm . if you have any information or know anyone who might be able to help please let me know and thank you for replying my email is []mboydjr2000@yahoo.com[/] or call me at 919-358-4921 my name is mike and again thank you and i'll try to give another update tommorow

Oh my! Im so very sorry to hear about your little girl passing. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />
Hair loss, or over grooming could be a number of things.
Hmmm, I dont know what to tell you since youve been to the Vet. I dont know what all the Vet has said or diagnosed. Is the Vet really experienced with Gliders? (I know many are not really that knowledgeable when it come to our little ones.)

You mentioned 3 medications?
I wonder what the Vet feels it is and what kind of meds they are?
Is there perhaps another Vet nearby that might help shed some light on this for you?
I sure wish I had some kind of answers for you or something. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Sending good thoughts and a prayer for your little guy.
Please keep us updated. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Re: excessive grooming chest area - 06/24/05 04:23 PM

a little more about the meds they are smz and trimethoprim, homeopet anxiety stress, metronidazole, and avix soother ointment. The vet is the only one that has worked with are gliders because of there experience with exotic animals and its the only vet we know of in nc that works with gliders. The meds are too cover all the bases. This is the report from the vet "The only potential problems we found were a low white blood cell count(low immunity?), blood-cell evidence of parasites or allergy, and suspected pathogens in the stool (however, stools and gi functions appear to be completely normal). The plan for now is to treat the skin both topically (Soother), and orally (pink antibiotic). The rasberry Metronidazole is for the stool organisms. The calming herbs are for his "stress"-the reason we think he is over-grooming his chest. Pleaseschedule Clay a recheck for mon or tues next week to monitor his progress. A final, unlikely explanation could be skin cancer or similar problem, but this appears unlikely." I hope this is enough info, if anyone knows of this problem with other gliders please any information helps thank you for your concerns.

Clay is over grooming his chest and tummy area still despite the the meds he is taking. He know has a large bald area from his scent gland down to his private parts. He go's back to the vet tomorrow and hopefully they can come up with something.

Im not sure where Butler,NC is but i have an awesome vet in SC that sees sugargliders if you would like a seocnd opinion. I haven't dealt with this before so I really don't have any other advice for you. DO you know the main cause of death of you little girl?Did they tell you what caused the bals spots in you little girl? It sounds like the samething that has happened to your little boy too.

Re: excessive grooming chest area - 06/28/05 09:59 PM

just wanted to update clay's condition. I took him to the vet yesterday and they decided to keep him for three more days because he has lost wieght since last week. they called me today and told me that his condition is getting worse and that he is not moving heardly and his white blood cells are still low. they have been given him fluids and meds but still no cause for why this happening. they done more test and still every thing comes back neg. so know i have to decide on what to do now. I've already spent 1300 dollors on him in past two weeks and still no answers and they say they came do a bone marrow test but they dont know if he'll make it through the percedure. I don't want to put him down but i dont want him to keep suffering. i'll wait till tommorwow and see if there any changes then i'll make my decision. i'd like to thank every one for there concerns and comments and hopefully thing will change for the best for clay

Wow, so sorry you and your baby are going through this.
I don't mean to sound uncaring or anything but have you considered doing a post mortem testing to determine what caused this problem? It could be helpful to others if you did.

I hope he gets better...

Re: excessive grooming chest area - 06/29/05 09:43 PM

i have bad news the vet call about 9:30am this morning and said clay was doing worse. then about 11:00am they called back and told me that clay had passed on they done everything they could for him but he just kept getting worse. They are going to do a post mortem test and the results should be back by next week. and we really need to know what is going on because we have seven other gliders but only one of them show signs of the same thing but not as bad so she on meds till we have some answer. and i will update as i know something thank you again and now clay can have a peacefull life at rainbow brigde.

Re: excessive grooming chest area - 06/30/05 02:57 AM

With multi gliders involved... sounds like some sort of contamination of their food source.

Since you are in N.C. are your gliders housed in a glider room that has high humidity?

Spores of mold or fungus is what I am thinking of... that would be airborne and settle onto the gliders food. Or perhaps a bag of dry feed that is damp without one knowing.

Suggest a C&S of the wet area of the remaining sick glider.

Re: excessive grooming chest area UPDATE - 07/02/05 04:04 AM

I'm still waiting on clays nacospy results and let everyone know what i find out, but i've noticed something else about my other female glider (kimberly). she is on an antibotic like clay was until we find out what it is, but i've noticed she is losing hair around her eyes and a few small spots on her head and there is no signs of scratching she also has the bald patch on her chest but she does not seem to be bothering it and it is not getting any worse so i'm puzzled as to what is going on. all of the adults but one have shown signs of the bald patch on there chest. ruben is the only adult glider that has no signs of this condition and also he is the bigest of them all. none of the babies have signs either. so again i will share what ever i find out and if anyone again has any ideas please feel free to share them. thank you.
