Eye troubles HELP!!

Eye troubles HELP!! - 09/17/05 06:12 AM

Seems to be one thing after the other, Kiki lost her joey last night now Gizmo has a horrible eye problem. I am not sure if it's an infection or what! I KNOW I need to get her to a vet ASAP but there's nothing I can do until tomorrow morning, we're driving three hours to get her to a specialty vet five towns away. I called every vet in the phone book (and some that wheren't) and no one can do anything until tomorrow. So right now I have neomycin polynyxin B sulfates and dexmethasone ointment to keep her eye moist as she can't blink. Has ANYONE seen ANYTHING like this before? I havn't!! I have no idea what happened. I just had her out yesterday!! Why do things keep slapping me in the face like this

Sounds like maybe an injury to the eye. Like a scratch. I am glad you are taking him to the Vet in the AM. They can look at it with a light and tell what's going on. Sounds like you are doing well with him now. Just hang in there a few more hours.

Please keep up posted.

And yes, there have been many eye injuries on the board. You can do a search if you need more info.

We will be waiting to hear from you.

That kind of looks like what vets call cherry eye in dogs. Poor baby. Keep an eye on him. (((((HUGS))))) Please let us know if he gets worse, or what the vet says in the morning.

Re: Eye troubles HELP!! - 09/17/05 06:35 AM

I know, I'm farmiliar with cherry eye in doggies. But I've never seen anything like this in suggies. Her eye is very buldgy, or atleast it looks that way to me maybe because her eye lid is so screwed up? What I thought might have happened is that she scratched or got her finger nail caught on the inside of her bottum eye lid while grooming or something and the cut irritated her and she fiddled with it more and it got inflamed and possible started to get infected. Its just amazing that something like this can happen is SUCH a short time period. I mean I keep such a close eye on everyone, if you ask anyone who I'm good friends with I'm always with the gliders. I play with them like three times a day! I mean, I pay such a close eye.

Re: Eye troubles HELP!! - 09/17/05 11:58 AM

Have you flushed her eye you with plain saline eye drops yet? Ian has a male, Bean, that is prone to getting irritated eyes. Usually, flushing them out helps a lot and reduced swelling enough so that he can blink... We've never been able to figure out why Bean's eyes get like that, but the vet has suggested allergies. We think that he may be allergic to cats...

Re: Eye troubles HELP!! - 09/17/05 05:42 PM

Really? Well the kitten was in the glider room the night before last while I was feeding them. But only BREAFLY. Maybe she's allergic too? I do already have expiriance with gliders with allergies. LOL we have a rescue hose hold here, so I am prepared with vets and such, I just couldn't get her in until today. Then the other delema is that I have NO money, just have to keep my fingers crossed my vet will do it for free until I can pay next week.

Re: Eye troubles HELP!! - 09/17/05 09:13 PM

Well I'm back from the vet with sad results. I guess her eye ruptured out of socet (no one is certain how this happened!) and it will have to be removed entirely, not to mention I'm sure they'll jam me around $350 and up for the surgery, then it's high risk aswel and she could bleed to death because of the artaries connected to the nerv endings of her eye.

Re: Eye troubles HELP!! - 09/17/05 11:34 PM

Thanks Becci, it will be a hard choice, I actually think my best bet is to keep the eye medicated with the drops I got and let it implode and heal its self.

Re: Eye troubles HELP!! - 09/18/05 01:16 AM

[:"green"]I forgot to mention in my response to your other thread that my Pika was once attacked by a cat (when she was still with her former owner). Although I didn't see it, apparently her eye was severely damaged. The vet had wanted to remove it, and her previous owner decided to treat it with drops to see what would happen. I don't know all the details, but I do know that Pika's eye was saved!!! I have had her for 2 1/2 years & it happened about a year before I got her. She now has a cataract in that eye & so is blind, but she still has the eye & is perfectly healthy otherwise.
Maybe wait and see your regular vet on Monday morning for a second opinion before making your final decision???
Again, I'll be praying for you & for Gizmo,
Suz

Wow, I hate to admit it, but I would never have guessed a ruptured globe from that picture!

Do you mean it actually ruptured (like a balloon) or popped out from the socket? In the picture, the globe itself doesn't appear injured, just the lid and surrounding tissue. The light reflex on the cornea is nice and bright and everything.

I'm so sorry to hear about her eye and your recent troubles. Keep your chin up. Things are bound to get better!

It poped out

Re: Eye troubles HELP!! - 09/18/05 06:55 AM

I agree with PeeperKeeper, that doesn't appear to be a ruptured globe or an eye that left the socket. It actually looks more like chemosis. Maybe a deceiving picture?

The cornea doesn't look bad or scratched from that picture, either.

One thing to keep in mind, the eye is developmentally a piece of brain that migrated out and became more specialized. The retina and optic nerve are contiguous with brain tissue. An infection around the eye is an infection bathing the brain, and puts one at great risk for sepsis and meningitis. Systemic antibiotics may be indicating for coverage.

If that is chemosis, the eye drops may help.

Chemosis is when the membranes that line the eyelids (conjunctiva) are swollen. They appear to have fluid in them. Sometimes, the conjunctiva becomes so swollen that the eyes cannot close properly. Chemosis is a nonspecific sign of eye irritation. This symptom is often related to an allergic response, infection, or severe exposure.

To treat allergies, consider the use of over-the-counter antihistamines. If these don't work, topical antihistamines from your veterinarian may help. There is a steroid in the eye drops you have.

Chemosis may also be associated with infections of the eye such as viral conjunctivitis (pink eye). In these cases, the eyes are also red. Treatment for the infection may be needed. Your eye drop has an antibiotic. What about oral meds to be safe?

Now that's what it looks like! Pink eye! My kids had that when they were little..looks just like it! I agree, the eyeball itself looks fine (to me)..just the surrounding tissue looks infected. Please get a second opinion. Prayers and HUGS!!

Well this post can now be moved to real storries!
I took Gizmo in for the surgery and when they got the eye out they found a tumor, which was what caused thy eye to protrude the way it did. They had to put her down.
