Tucker and Now Allison

Tucker and Now Allison - 02/17/06 04:50 PM

I have a trio, a male, Tucker and 2 females. All are 3 years old. Tucker went to the vet Tuesday for what we thought may be a tumor. It turned out to be a huge abcess. Last night, Allison became very ill, very quickly. I found her cold on the floor of the cage. Within 2 hours she was in severe respiratory distress and was extremly dehydrated. We spent the night at the Emergency Vet, then she went to my regular vet first thing this morning. She is better hydrated now, but still in respiratory distress. At my last update from the vet, he found a mass in the center of her abdomen. At this point, I do not know if it is another abcess or a tumor, or fluid or gas build up in there. They have to knock her out to get x-rays and will try a needle biopsy at that time. Knocking her out has some drawbacks, due to her respiratory distress, but if the mass is pushing on her lungs that could be causing the problem. That is all I know right now. Please offer prayers for all 3 of them. Tuck and Reese were calling for Alli when I left last night frown Tuck is still very sick, and Allison could very well die any time.

When I got home she was already dead, with rigor setting in. My drive from the vet is over an hour. She wouldn't even have made it to the emergency vet.

As late stage as this was when it was found, there is nothing we could have done to save her.
So, the good news is, out of the three that I've had problems with, no bacteria found. None. So, this isn't contagious. Allie and Fuzzy's deaths were not related in any way. Tucker is (hopefully) on the mend.
When the histopath comes back, I will post that.

So sorry, Shawna. I know all of this has been terribly hard on you. You put so much of yourself into the care of your little babies and yet there are times that there is nothing anyone can do to save them. You're a very special person for caring so much and trying so hard.

Shawna, I'm so sorry to hear little Alli didn't make it. Are you having them do a necr.? It's just so weird that she and Tucker had such similar things going on at the same time.

You are such an amazing person, to do all you do for these poor rescues. There really aren't that many people (although many of them are on this board) who would leave in the middle of the night to drive nearly an hour to the vet for a sick glider, let alone do it as many times as you have.

I will be taking Alli in for a necropsy. Hopefully, her loss can be a gain for others this way. The trio were all three bought at the same time, at the same age, and have always been together. The third one, Reese, is not showing any symptoms of anything, but, she is going in on Monday for a check up anyway. They did get to say goodbye to Alli, when I showed her to them, they started grooming her. That about broke my heart.

Re: Tucker and Now Allison - 02/18/06 07:34 AM

Shawna,

I know how heart breaking it is to watch your animals say good-bye to another...it's also amazing...as so many people argue that animals don't have souls and don't understand death. But they do.

I had the pleasure of meeting this silly bunch, about 3 years ago...back when Marion and Anastasia still owned them. Tuck was a joey at the time. Anyway, I'm pretty sure all three of them were bought from the same petstore in Austin, and were about the same age. From what I remember, they were all bought within a small time frame. Perhaps this has something to do with their lineage?

I'm here if you need anything.

Sending lots of suggie hugs and kisses in your direction.

Shawna, you know Mary and I were pulling so hard for little Allison to make it. Keeping our fingers crossed for Tucker. This is all so strange. My heart breaks for them. They were too young for these things to be happening. We know you did everything possible. Sometimes we try so hard and still can't save them. Hopefully the vet will be able to give you closure on what Allison's problem was.

Re: Tucker and Now Allison - 02/20/06 03:25 AM

Tuck seems to be fine. He will go back on March 16th for a follow up visit. Their third cagemate goes in tomorrow for a thorough check up to be sure there is nothing going on with her. She has no symptoms of any kind. Hopefully she is fine.
