My Sweet baby holly is gone... - 03/12/06 09:08 PM

This morning around 10 am I woke up got the bowls out of the gliders cages noticed that holly hadnt eaten anything. I opened up h er pouch, only to find a hole in the pouch, with strings around it. I check my pouches EVERY night, and this hole was NOT there last night. My poor baby was inside, strangled to death in her own bed. I purchased these pouches from glidermom102. Please be sure to check your pouches for loose threads..I have always been ontop of my pouches, and i'm still in shock this happened! I am crying my eyes out right now I cant beleive this happened to me she was sooo young too I got her no more then 3 -4 weeks ago and she was just starting to bond with me.
Please everyone Pray for Holly

Ohmigosh, Kris, I'm so sorry to hear this happened!!!!

I make pouches for my fuzzies & some for other friends, and that is the #1 thing I guard against when I'm using any kind of material other than fleece! I learned a couple years ago when I had a fuzzy catch her foot in a frayed piece of material.....now ANY loose ends get zig-zagged down or simply folded over THEN zig-zagged down.

My heart is aching for your loss.

Kris I am so sorry to hear about Holly. I am truely sorry it was one of my pouches that she got hurt in. I check all my pouches and they are glider safe and you said in your email to me that you checked it yourself and it was fine. These pouches are almost 7 months old. You have been happy with the pouches to this point. It hurts me to hear you call them cheap. I would never make a pouch or toy that was not safe for our gliders. I am hurt that you think I would. Any pouch that has been used and washed several times needs to be replaced at least by 6 months if not sooner. I would think with the order you were fixing to place with glidermom_pet_pouches you were happy with them. I can not control if a glider chews a hole in a pouch.

Again I am sorry this happened.

I was not saying that it was your fault or anything just saying it was the fault of the pouch and not that its a bad pouch... Just she chocked on a string...

If ANYONE thinks this is donnas fault dont because if I would have thought this would happen I woulndt have sold her my favorite joey I have produced..... And I talk to Donna on a regular basis... so this was NOT her fault!

Re: My Sweet baby holly is gone... - 03/13/06 12:35 AM

First, I am sad you lost your glider. That would be such a heartbreaking thing to go through.

I have had gliders get stuck or caught up in things other than pouches. Sometimes they get caught after the nails have been trimmed. I have gliders that will CHEW through anything and one that literally CHEWED UP a Stealth Wheel.

I have several pouches from glidermom102 that I've had for awhile and have been washed MANY times. NOT ONE of them has a loose string. They are exceptionally well made.

I have also met Donna in person, she is the sweetest most caring person and all her gliders are well taken care of, not to mention TAME and spoiled rotten with LOVE. She is a person that goes out of her way to help anyone.

Since you checked the pouch and no strings were there that day, it sounds like she may have been a chewer since there was a hole there? This is so sad, one thing to consider with gliders that like to chew is the plastic nest boxes such as the apple etc. They can still chew them to a point but wouldn't be able to get caught up in them.

Accidents happen, I had a glider get caught up in a curtain of all things the other night and was twisted so bad I had to cut the curtain into and work to free her. She is fine but just saying..I can't blame Sears. Also, there is much more to how this happened as there usually is in cases such as this.

KristopherDeRose, God speed to you and yours.

Re: My Sweet baby holly is gone... - 03/13/06 06:14 AM

Kris, So sorry you lost Holly. I have two gliders in my home that are rescues, they both lost a leg in a pouch, had it not been caught sooner, they would have both died. I know several peole that will not use pouches for that reason. And I am a pouch maker. I do think the pouches are the best, but you have to know what type of glider you have, and be careful in what you buy. I am sure kne/did both, but, accidents can and do happen. I am so sorry for your loss.

I did want to say, you can make the best pouch, double stitch like I do, use good fabric, and if a glider is determined, they CAN chew through and they can die. It's a huge fear for me to see someone say my pouch caused a gliders death. It has never happende but I know it could. So I can understand her panic when she read that.

I have never used her pouches, or seen one, but know that there is no perfect pouch and the only way to keep a glider from never getting caught in one, is to not use them at all. Judie uses containers with fleece scraps, which, is not a bad idea. Glidermom, sorry you have to go through this too.

Good luck to you both. Again, so sorry to hear about Holly.

Re: My Sweet baby holly is gone... - 03/13/06 06:21 PM

This is not Donna's fault. I for one and very sad. I bonded with Holly before she left here a month ago. Nails were trimmed when she left. This baby did not get a nail caught up, but choked on string. With washings a tiny string can be pulled on by a glider and she probably pulled and pulled until she ate the thing up. I have called Donna and re-assured her that I do not blame her. I have advised her to put the seam on the side of the pouch, rather than the top. After two gliders climbing through the top, I had to change the design. It can happen to anyone. If you only have a couple of pouches per cage, get more so that they don't wear out as fast. The gliders are smart and particularly HOlly! She knew that there was a place to get through and play with strings. She is over the rainbow bridge. I commend Kris for checking his pouches every day cause I don't. I only check them once a week when changing them out. I am sorry Kris.. Holly was a wonderful little girl and I loved her so much. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />

Thank you to Sheila and Kris. I know both of you are trying to make me feel better but it is just a horrible thing. I hope everyone knows that I realy check my pouches before they leave here. I am so sorry that Holly had to pass.

I am glad we can get over this together. Breeding these little ones is a hard job sometimes exspecially when things like this happen.

My prayers are with you Kris and Sheila

I am so sorry for your loss Kris. If anything good may come out of this...it teaches us to remember to check our pouches because we never know how fiesty and mischevious our babies may be. Praying for you and your family.

Re: My Sweet baby holly is gone... - 03/14/06 11:28 PM

Just an observation I made this weekend.....I was sewing d-rings into my tent to hang toys from and noticed that my gliders would play 'attack' the string as I was sewing. They were MESMORIZED by it. I'm assuming then, that if one found a string, it would be like a dog with a bone and it wouldn't give it up. They sure can be persistant, but I will be checking all of my items tonight. I am so afraid of something like that happening. I know Kris isn't blaming Donna, but I can understand how Donna's initial reaction was to feel hurt by the post. It's just one of those things that can happen and it sucks. Plain and simple. My thoughts and prayers are with you both today.
