Hurt glider please help - 08/05/04 04:17 AM

She said she had him out of his cage yesterday for 3 hours and he was fine but today when she woke up he was at the bottom of the cage and looked sick . I told her to bring him back and he is nothing at all like he was 2 days ago. He will not move but he will try to eat and drink. and he is bleeding from the opening at the base of his tail. My vet is closed until tomorrow. please help. I will be woke all night watching over him. If you can please call me at 219-879-6218 Please help!!!!!! Thank You, Dawnie

The vet looked at him and after doing x-rays and other test said that he must have been stepped on because his spine was broke and some of his insides were busted which caused the internal bleeding. Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/05/04 04:27 AM

This glider needs to see a vet ASAP! Any vet will do if you can't find yours. Here's a vet list. And here's a page with emergency contact phone numbers. If you don't see a vet on that list that you can get to just take out the phone book and call until you find a place that will see him tonight. Please keep us updated.

Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/05/04 04:32 AM

I notified a moderator, & hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I am will be along to help you shortly. Did she say anything about him making any strange noises? If he is bleeding from his bottom then it could be very serious and he could be self-mutilating for some reason. The best thing would be to get to a vet as soon as you can tomorrow (or to find another vet that can see him tonite), and to try to keep him away from his injury in the meantime. I hope your little one will be okay, he's in my prayers

Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/05/04 04:36 AM

Try to keep calm so you can help the wee one. You'll be more help to him if you can think clearly and get him to the vet. I know it's scary. I'm sending lots of (((hugs))) to you and your suggie. All crossables are crossed. Let us know what the vet says.

BTW, you said the base of the tail looks red. If you think he's been chewing himself he needs to have an e-collar put on him right away. Shot glass e-collar.

Listing of Indiana Vets

I see in your profile you mention something about Indiana, here is a search on Indiana vets, just start looking at them all find one open and that is close to you. You do not need a vet that takes care of gliders, all you need at this time is a vet that is OPEN, or has emergency hours. Call all of them till you find one that will see you, or that will tip you off to a place to find a vet.

You have gotten good information about an e-collars, but if there is active bleeding, not just dried blood or redness, be sure to add a bit of slight pressure to the area to stop the bleeding. Just with all wounds, animals or not. Keep this glider with you in a pouch where you can keep an eye on him as you search for a vet. Keep him warm and dry, add some extra fleece into a pouch, cut up a sweatshirt if you don't have any available or use tissues.
Offer plenty of liquids. You may have to wet your finger and let him lick it off you if he is too weak. If you should have to put him back in a cage, make sure to take all the bedding/whatever you catch his waste in, and place clean white paper towels on the bottom. This way you can catch any fresh bowel movements and can see what color his urine turns the paper.

I know there is more experience help on the way. Right now don't beat yourself up, try to stay calm and take advice given to you

Most important, find a vet.

It looks like he his bleeding fom the inside. I think it's called the clocal area. He's not messing with it . I think she hurt him and didn't want to say it.

Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/05/04 12:17 PM

So he's not bleeding from the base of his tail? right? I would have to say if he is bleeding from his cloacal area then there is def. something wrong with your little one. Not to scare you but he could have a UTI or could have even self mutilated for some reason. The best advice I can give is run this baby to the vet as there is nothing you can do at home to make him better.! If he did indeed chew himself then you need anitbiotics and a good e-collar to get him through this. Please keep us updated on him, my thoughts and prayers are with you!! Best of luck to the both of you!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Do you know if he was being watched while he was running around the room? It's not a safe place to be running around alone. Your baby will be waiting for you. In the mean time he will be free to rope dance with all the other gliders.

OMG when I talked to you on the phone I knew he was in bad shape, but had no idea that anyone would treat a suggie like that. That just makes me sick. You hate to think that way without confirmation as it just ruins your thoughts on humanity. I am so sorry that you had to go through this. Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/06/04 05:06 AM

I beleive she did not take him to the doctor because on the contract that we signed I always tell people they have 30 days to bring the glider back .So when she hurt him they just said that he was sick instead of being truthful about it. And it was cheaper for them to exchange it for a different one. I did not find out that it had gotten hurt until the vet told me. I couln't understand how all of a sudden he got sick. The vet told me that if it were a dog or a cat he would think that it got hit or ran over by a car. They told me he looked sick they at know time told me that they hurt him.

Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/06/04 05:14 AM

Chey , I really don't think she learned the right lesson. She hurt a innocent baby and instead of taking responsibility they lied and told me that over night he just got sick. I am so very hurt I've cried off and on through the day and my 13 year old still has not come out of her room.

Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/06/04 05:16 AM

i wouldnt give another glider to these people please screen people carefully and if they are young forget giving them a glider. i wish whoever did this to this poor glider gets the same suffering this little glider got.

Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/06/04 05:40 AM

I thought I did screen them . ( her parents) Her father called and asked if I had gliders and I said yes. I asked lots of questions and they told me that she had been reserching them for almost 6 months . They were buying the gliders as a surprise birthday gift. But that doesn't excuse her from hurting my baby. And then lied about why he didn't look right.

Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/06/04 06:02 AM

Dawnie, considering the damage the little guy suffered, and the attempted cover up, I'd think you wouldn't have to honor a replacement-contract or no. There is no excuse for abuse/neglect of medical needs (which not taking an injured animal to a vet is illegal in some states and even carries jail time). With the vet to back you as to the extent of the injuries, I believe the court would support you if they cared to take it that far. It's horrible to think someone would do this to an animal, wait on medical treatment, and then lie about it. IMHO-that kind of person should be taken out and shot. (sorry, it's how I feel). If they ask for a refund, give it Minus the vet bills. I feel so bad about this, and for you and your family!

Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/06/04 08:57 PM

such a sad sad story,my heart goes out to you.
I think with the fact that they did not seek medical attention but returned him to u and wouldn't tell you what happened to him,not only delayed possible treatment and pain therapy he could have had but this is also morally wrong. Contract wise,if you had one this could equal a breech. Regardless of that becuase of hiding it,even if it was an accident that makes it so much more wrong and seemingly puts it more under cruelty rather then accidental as far as animal rights go.I think, though it may be difficult they should be reported for what they have done, they need to learn a harsh lesson in this I think.
Your poor baby joey,I am so sorry for you and it.
Under no circumstances what so ever do to the obvious and proven injuries of either accident or intent, but inuries non the less you are under absolutely no obligation to return a single cent or replace the joey, you have the right to refuse to do that becuase they hurt it.
Only if the joey died of illness or of no explanation within your garantee period would u be required to do that.
I would choose not to give them another glider or money and would report them for what they did especially becuase they hid it from you. With the fact that there has been xrays etc you have proof of this cruelty to back up your side.
Again I am so sorry you have had to go through this and loose this little guy like this, its so heart breaking.

Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/07/04 02:21 PM

we all try our best to screen... and every once in awhile one slips through our fingers .. i've had it happen to me once too and it was horrible...

however, since they were dishonest they violated the contract and therefore they don't have to be able to get another glider.

this makes me ill

Re: Hurt glider please help - 08/15/04 02:33 AM

Dawnie, You did the best you could screening, as has already been said, sometimes people get by us, no matter how hard we try to screen them! I've had a few myself, luckily they were this serious, but could have been. The only way to prevent this from EVER happening is to not sell gliders or place gliders period. That would be really sad for all those out there that could and would provide a wonderful home. Don't blame yourself, you did all you could. I would also think that they would have to have upheld their end of the contract to for you to. Usually if an animal is mistreated and that causes death, that voids the replacement clause, that is only there if it's something you are responsible for. I only guarantee that the glider is healthy when it leaves my home, because I don't know what happens after it's out my door. If they can prove it's a health issue that I should have known about, that's different, but rare.
Hugs, don't blame yourself!
