Glider killed finches!!!

Glider killed finches!!! - 05/04/01 02:02 AM

I mistakenly put my two new finches in my gliders cage for an overnight emergency stay and by morning, one was partially eaten with not much left of her and the other, although alive, died of unseen injuries an hour later!!
I think the male finch probably died of fright!!! Don't ever put anyother small pet in the same cage with a glider!!! I feel so stupid!!!
Now I read that they eat pinkies (baby mice)!! I am assuming that she got hungry and grabbed one of them. There was hardly anything left of her:0
I never expected this to happen. I hope she hasn't developed a taste for blood!!! Well, thanks for letting me get it off my chest!!

Im assuming your a new owner of gliders as well if that situation happened with your finches...as any amount of research would have made it very clear that little birdies and gliders = lively snack.
Sorry to hear about your finches...but thats what happens when you put two different species that arent compatible in one cage. But im sure you learned, all be it the hard way...as we all have with different issues in the past.
Christine

I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for your loss. While we have the best interests of gliders on our minds on this board, I'm sure your finches were very dear to you, too. It's a good warning to remember -- thanks, and again, I'm sorry for your loss.
------------------
Lucy

What I meant by "mistakenly" was meant in a way other than you interpreted the word to mean. I made a "mistake" by putting the finches in the same cage as the glider.
I did not "mistakenly" put them in the cage because I figured it was the "finch" cage and did so without realizing that there was a glider named "Honeyface" in there.
In other words, you don't put a bird in an aquarium full of water. This would be mistakenly done. I intended to place the finches in with the glider because I figured it was safe for just one night. It's not like I didn't know who's cage it was!
Thank you for the sympathy. Although I had just gotten the finches and didn't develop a relationship with them, they were really sweet. A woman who raises them had just given them to me as a gift.

I am so sorry to hear about your Finch. What a wild glider. He must have thought it was a great day, but that is another story. (I knew what you meant with the mistakenly thing as well). It was not your fault. so don't beat yourself up. Thank you for the information.
Happy Gliding
Michael []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/cool.gif[/]
& Gabe []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif[/]
I too am sorry for your loss.
I do believe though that Lacenut1 understood what you meant when using the word "mistakenly". Gliders are carniverous and birds are on their list of prey in the wild. You might as well have put a cat in there with the birds! I don't mean to offend, and again I am sorry, some times life's lessons are the hard ones. You definitely don't want to put anything other than gliders in your glider cage.
Jennifer & Chris
Fizzgig & Mia []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif[/] []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif[/]
Gelfling & Kira []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif[/] []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif[/]

OK. I am not going to be hard on myself. Accidents happen. I didn't really read the book I bought when I got her.
I didn't know they were carnivourus, I thought they liked seeds, fruits, some veggies and that glider food they sell in pellet form.
Andy :0
Honeyface []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif[/]

Although it was probably horrific for the birds you have to look for the good in it. The sugar gliders had a chance to feel wild and free again like the little hunters they are in the forests and if only once, im sure they now find pellets very boring.
And i am very sorry about your finches, sugar gliders are so cute its hard to believe they could do so much damage, many people have made this mistake []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif[/]

Just wanted to say sorry about your birds. It is kinda of crazy that these cute little guys can do so much damage though.

Luckie, I find it odd that you were just crying and vomiting about Gliders in cages (I don't know the situation and I'm not attacking anyone involved here) and now you're saying look on the bright side, the finch that got devoured and the one that later died from unseen injuries and probably a very traumatic experience provided a Glider with a lively hunt. Just think it's odd is all.

Honeyface, read the book! []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif[/] Gliders have a lot of special needs. Try to look into getting them on a better diet. Dry food is not the best way to go.
My gliders have been on BML since early this year, and i

Well, I found a vet to take Honeyface.
I am sad but at least she will live to be well taken care of. I didn't have the time she required of me.
Working one job and running a business simply didn't allow me the luxury of enjoying her. She was too much for me to handle.
After several attempts to make her feel at home and surving several painful bites, I realized we were not made for each other. I just couldn't afford the time.
I was given two finches for free and they are more compatible with my lifestyle(and their's too!).
Finches are no replacement for Honeyface as far as being able to return love or anything but their needs are much less complex and we get along fine.
Thank you all for the great responses. I guess this means I am no longer eligible to be a member of this board but I will keep it in my favorites list because I love all animals and would like to come here once in a while.
Andy and Honeyface []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif[/] []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/sad.gif[/]
