Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help

Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 03:56 AM

I am going to start off by saying, I am going to the vet as soon as humanly possible. Our emergency vets here can only sub-q or give oxygen. I can sub-q and we don't need oxygen. My Chloe is a very sick little girl. I opened her pouch a little while ago, because she wasn't out eating like normal. She popped her little head up, and I said, "Hey, there you are!" Her cage mate climbed onto my arm, and she tried to come, too. She is so wobbly, she can't stand up. She looks like she would if she were incredibly dizzy or very, very drunk. She can be still if she doesn't try to move. The second she moves, even just her head, she is very wobbly. She will lose her balance and fall over, catching herself at the last moment. She acts like she cannot see. She doesn't react to my hand or fingers in front of her at all. She has no grip strength. She can hold something, but it is very easy to take it. She isn't dehydrated. She doesn't have any wounds that I can see. Her nose is purple, but she is breathing fine. I can't hear any popping or wheezing. She finds her way by smell right now. Her eyes are dull and her ears are a bit down, but just to glance at her, while she's still, she looks fine.
Last night she was out playing and eating and having snacks like normal. None of the other gliders, including her cage mate, are having any issues. We are going to the vet first thing in the morning. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I want to take as many suggestions in as I can, since I don't know which doctor I will see.

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 04:03 AM

Hi Shawna,
Lord knows what could be causing this. Is Chloe very old?
I hope she is alright. Hopefully someone else that might have more knowledge of something like this will come along soon.

She will be 9 in May, so she isn't young, but I have one that is 13, so she isn't old, either. I'm so worried about her.

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 04:08 AM

Toxin or infection comes to mind as possible problems. dunno Dehydration can cause that kind of behavior too, but I know you are on top of that. I am sorry that she is so sick, I hope the vet can figure something out for her, let us know when you know something. My prayers and thoughts are with you both. hug2

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 04:16 AM

I was wondering if she was old and all of a sudden acts like she is if they can have strokes? Maybe she just has a bad bug? I hope too that your vet will be able to help her feel better. My Boo-Boo will be 9 this summer and I worry about him. I will have you both in my prayers and I will be checking for an update tomorrow. angel

OMG! Shawna - that is heartbreaking. I couldn't watch it all.

It almost looks neurological? Maybe a stroke, as Pat suggested.

I'll be thinking of you two non-stop and praying for you both. I hope morning comes quickly.

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 04:46 AM

Shawna,
Sounds like she might be having a hypoglycemia problem. I had a glider that did almost the same thing and went into a hypoglycemia seizure, He was very unstable, lethargic and glassy eyed he couldn't see or respond to me. I snatched him up & used one drop of white Karo syrup, placed it on the end of my finger tip and got it into his mouth onto his gum's. It took a couple of minutes (felt like a lifetime) then he started coming around. I took him to the vet and he confirmed about the hypoglycemia. Please let me know if I can do anything. Keeping fingers crossed and you & Chloe in my prayers..... hug2 hug2 hug2 hug2 hug2 hug2

Anita heart

(note:)I used White Karo Syrup instead of honey because honey has 5 components in it that a gliders system has to break down before they get the sugar that is needed.)

Is she drooling? Or does she seem to be wet?

Oh, that just brings tears!

I wonder too if she's had a stroke?

hug2 You must be so upset.

I hope you get some more suggestions to take to the vet in the morning. How glider experienced are they? This may require a specialist.

Sending lots of good vibes for your precious girl.

cry The video is heartbreaking. hug2

Along with what others have said, I would also have her ears checked, just to be sure it isn't some type of ear infection, as I have seen dogs with ear infections list quite a bit and act very dizzy. (I'm just throwing out any idea that comes to mind). dunno

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 05:33 AM

Yeah, I sent Val the video, and she said stroke, toxin, ear infection! LOL Not funny, but I just keep going back to she looks and acts dizzy. I am hoping for an ear infection. Anything else, just doesn't have a good ending.

Cora, my diagnoses are always wrong! My vet says if anything weird is coming in, I'll be the one to bring it, so...here we go again!

Anita, she isn't wet or drooling.

She will come out, eat a bit, drink a bit, then go back in the pouch, which is laying down like in the video. She goes to the very back of the pouch and puts her nose down in the corner, like she's wedging herself in, and goes to sleep. Cooper, her cage mate, seems to be watching her, he will only go from the pouch to the food, because the last time he went elsewhere, she tried to follow him and fell into the water. They are in a hospital cage, with LOTS of fleece on the floor.

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 06:01 AM

Poor dear! I couldn't watch the whole video. Too hard my soft heart. worried

I only scanned the replies, but did anyone suggest an inner ear problem? In addition to a neurological issue or stroke, I would look into seeing if something is going on with the ears.

I'm praying for a speedy recovery!

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 06:31 AM

Shawna,

I just went back and watched her video over & over again. I am still thinking its a mini seizure having to do something with hypoglycemia and or she may have a severe inner ear infection. I know when I go through a situation when my sugar hits bottom I feel the same way she's acting especially when it gets really, really low. I start shaking so bad and I want to just go hide my head.

It might even be an epileptic seizure. (I have never heard of epilepsy in gliders). But we are seeing so many different illness in them. Have you been able to actually hold her in your hands and if so does her head and body keep thrashing around like this?

I know none of us are vets and we are all guessing. Keeping you and Chloe in my prayers. Let me know if you need anything.

Sending lots of healing hugs your way..... hug2 hug2 hug2 hug2 hug2 hug2 hug2 hug2

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 06:35 AM

Shawna, check to see if her pupils are dilating properly, a concussion will cause the same symptoms, as well as a bacterial infection..

will she take yogurt from you? that will help balance any bad bacteria.

the fact both back legs are not working points to head trauma, or spinal trauma, as well as being a symptom of a bacterial infection.

If it were a stroke, one side of her body would still work. the sudden offset of not using the back legs, points to injury or bacteria the not eating well points more towards the bacterial.

the acting as if she were blind, also points to those things as well.

Toxin also is a possibility, but usually dehydration accompanies it. as well as choking/vomiting and spasms.

since you said she is not dehydrated, not spasming/seizuring then toxins is less of a possibility.

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 07:01 AM

Shawna I am talking to Judy right now she can't get on GC With her nose being purple she said she's not getting enough oxygen which could indicate flood around the lungs or heart. She said minimize the glider stress if she is not dehydrated please don't try to hydrate her because just be adding to the floods..

Judy said also maybe try alittle orange juice if she'll drink but don't force it on her.

Has she pooped at all? What is her stool like?

What color are her foot PADS on the bottom of her feet?

Shawna,

How is Chloe doing? I have been so preoccupied with little Ginger I haven't been reading the other threads.

I will say a prayer that she gets better. Hang in there I know what your going through.

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 11:50 AM

If her nose is purple, indicating lowered oxygen getting into the blood stream, my fisr guesses would be stroke and/or heart attack/pulmonary embolism... because the neurological symptoms occuring WITH the purple nose indicating lack of oxygen would seem to point to a cardiovascular (blood vessel) BLOCKAGE of SOME kind, SOMEWHERE in her body, preventing proper blood flow to the brain and the lungs OR allowing proper bllod flow but with too little OXYGEN in that blood flow to the brain from the lungs. PLEASE upadte us ASAP... we will ALL be praying for your baby...

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 04:17 PM

Okay, we just got back from the vet. The vet does not have a diagnosis yet. He is thinking all of the above. The chart page says: trauma, infect (toxo), metabolic (calcium), malabsorbt leading to metabolic dz, neoplasia, degenerative, etc...

We gave her sub-q fluids, as she was dehydrated this morning, and much more lethargic. We gave her a B-complex shot, in case of Toxoplasmosis (SP?). I have antibiotics for her (TMPS) as well as an oral calcium suppliment. She doesn't have HLP, but the vet said we could not overlook the possibility of it developing or that she may not be absorbing calcium. He did say she is breathing fine, her lungs and heart sound good, so I don't think that is a worry any more.

I am realizing that I didn't make something clear last night. She can walk and move her legs just fine. I said in the video that she isn't moving her legs, so that you would realize how severe her balance issue is, as in, all of that movement you saw was just her being wobbly, not her actually walking.

She does have what looks like some minor swelling on her face below her eyes, straight up the bridge of her nose. That could be from a fall, or it could be an infection (doesn't feel like infection), so we can't rule out a concussion, either.

I am supposed to call the vet back on Tuesday, to give an update, possibly return. If she starts to get better, then my guess is she could recover. But if she doesn't, then I don't think it's good news.

I put them to bed, and will be checking her later today, and I'll check her feet and hands then, see what color they are. I'll keep everyone posted.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. I know she isn't feeling good. But, I can only imagine if this is an ear infection and she's really that dizzy, poor, poor baby.

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 04:26 PM

frown watched the video and read the replies. I hope your vet can get it figured out and help poor Chloe.

What came to mind was stroke or inner ear issues causing loss of balance/dizziness.

I hope it's something minor a little medicine and lots of love will cure!!

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/14/09 11:11 PM

Thanks for the update, Shawna. I would think as unbalanced as she was, she couldn't drink enough to stay hydrated. Or perhaps even regulate her body temp? So - I'm not surprised the vet SubQed her.

You and she are still in my constant thoughts!

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/15/09 12:13 AM

Thanks. I will be getting her up around 9 or so for her next meds and for a sub-q, and for food. I didn't mess with her too much earlier, because she spent 2 hours at the vet and needed some rest. I hope I won't have to force feed her. I'm always scared I'm going to aspirate them when I have to do that. I am hoping that she'll just eat on her own wink

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/15/09 02:25 AM

I just did her evening meds and sub-q. She hates it. But, she did demolish a 1"x2" chunk of cantaloupe. She also ate a tiny bit of yogurt and like 3 licks of HPW. I will go back in an hour or so and try to feed her again. I'm thrilled that she at as much cantaloupe as she did. I know it's cause she's thirsty, but it's a very positive sign in my eyes.

Thanks for your prayers and thoughts. We appreciate it.

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/15/09 03:26 AM

i do so hope that she will pull thru this.
hopefully, the meds will be kicking in & taking some of the pain &/or dizzyness away. if i was that dizzy, i would want my head to be as stable as possible, so sticking it in the corner was probably her only way to do that.
i wouldn't wait, i would go rite back in on monday if she hasn't shown any signs of improvement. they hide their illnesses so well, that she could appear to be getting better, but then not be @ all.
i want whats best for you both

Re: Very Sick Little Girl Needs Your Help - 03/16/09 12:52 AM

We had pee again. And the first poop I've seen since this started. It is cantaloupe colored! LOL, but she's eating. I mushed some cantaloupe and put it in some yogurt with a bit of HPW powder today, and she's eating it. Yippee!

She is still very wobbly, she eats a few bites, then heads for a corner to take a nap. It's rough to watch. We're doing this 3 times during the day, then again twice before I go to bed. She can and will walk to her own food bowl by herself. It's just very hard for her and takes a long time. It is also very messy, with her balance issues. She still won't drink much, as she falls in, and it scares her. We are going to use a trough tonight, and see how that works. I hate sub-q'ing her, as does she.

She is grooming. She had some food on her leg this morning, and next time I took her out, it was gone. She tries to play. She climbs the cage bars, and me. So, I am hoping the fact that she is grooming, trying to eat and play, and such, means that whatever is going on with her is just one thing, and not fatal.

She is still really dehydrated, but is now eating on her own, and drinking on her own. So, we will see. I work from home tomorrow and can do a better update then.
