Seaweed for gliders?

Seaweed for gliders? - 03/20/04 10:23 PM

I was just thinking, I've never seen seaweed on a list of glider foods. Is it because they won't eat it, it's not recommended, or no one has ever considered it before?

As we all know calcium intake is very important for gliders. Most seaweeds have very high calcium:phosphorus ratios so it would seem those who feed "fresh diets" would be very reliant on calcium.

As far as serving seaweed, I think most people would get nori sheets cut into little strips and soak them in water. Wouldn't it be cute to see a glider sucking up little green noodles?

Seriously, am I the first one to think of this?

That sounds YUMMY!!! But I would only give it only on a FEW occasions. IT's very gassy. I am sure they would love it. But it is one of the foods that I would feed only severeal times a year. Perhaps I am over protective. But to have a "gas" build up in a glider is not good.

What a treat that would make. Just be conservetive with it.

I have never heard of seaweed causing gas. I do know that Kombu seaweed is frequently added to beans to reduce gas, but maybe other types of seaweed do cause gas. I suppose it would be important to know the differences between the types.

I have been thinking that the salt content might be a deterrent though, I've been doing a little more research and it does look a bit high in salt. But that depends on the kind of seaweed too.

Huh, maybe seaweed is good for gliders as long as you buy the low-salt low-gas kind?

I just checked my package of Sushi nori (yes I make sushi at home) and it says its only ingredient is seaweed and it has 0mg sodium, so I am assuming seaweed sheets are glider safe. It also has Vitamin A 8%, vitamin C 6%, Calcium 2% and Iron 2%, 1 gram of fiber and 1 gram of protein (and only 10 calories!)

I tried wakame seaweed a couple times ... the 'kids' were having no part of it... It ended up being more of a 'toy'
(It does have a good amount of sodium, so Id only offer it every once in awhile. )
