I'm dropping my boys off early tomorrow morning to be neutered and the voicemail reminder from my vet's office brought up a big issue. They're closed for the day so I thought I'd ask my question here. The receptionist said in her message that the boys can't eat or drink anything after midnight, which was never brought up when I scheduled the appointment. I know that's standard procedure for people and other animal surgery, but do gliders also need an empty stomach before surgery? I'm very worried about this because I'd always heard gliders can starve and dehydrate very quickly. Did the receptionist just give me her standard pre-surgery instructions and not take into account what type of animal I have? I know a lot of people here have had their boys neutered so I'd really appreciate some advice.

Those were my pre op instructions. I woke my boy up before midnight to give him a chance to eat and took the food and water away at midnight. He did just fine. Good luck to you and please update us. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

Yep … did the same thing here…. I would recommend that you take a grape or to with you when you pick them up… check with your vet too… but mine said it was fine to offer when I picked up Mango, I handed him half a grape and he just sank back down into his pouch and enjoyed it!

No, the receptionist wasn't giving the "usual" pre-operative story----you DO need to cut off all their food & water after midnight. I was concerned about the dehydration issue after Ernie had his surgery....BUT....when Willy Wonka had to have an emergency tail surgery last week, things got complicated because he vomited when he was put under. (I was wondering why it was taking so long.....glad the vet didn't tell me til AFTERWARDS. He knows me well enough to know I would have FLIPPED OUT!!!)

You can be there when he recovers with your water bottle handy. Of course, give him a chance to "come to" completely before offering anything to drink.

Good luck to you & let us all know how things turn out.

[:"green"]My vet has never had me withhold food or water for any of my gliders and they've never had a problem while under anesthesia. However, I would follow the advice of your veterinarian...

My vet has always aaked that I take food out of the cage by @ 3-4 am. He knows how easily gliders can dehydrate tho, so has not asked that I remove the water from the cage.
