I have seen videos on this site of gliders eating bones. What kind of bones are they able to chew on? I have read alot about glider diets but I have not found alot about what "people" foods gliders can have and digest well. I have read the list of don't foods like onions but other than fruits and veggies do you feed them food from the table? I am still learning so bare with me plz.

its probably chicken drumsticks you see in those videos. i will make a cornish hen, NO BUTTER or anything on it, and give some to the gliders! they love em! they strip the bones clean!

What is the reason you would give the gliders a bone? Is it so they can chew on it, or so they can eat the meat off of it?

I'm not sure I understand why you would give them a bone at all. dunno

I read many threads here on GC where people were giving chicken bones to their gliders. I think more as a treat/toy on rare occasions. I had some pork rib bones leftover and let my gliders have them for one night while in the playroom. they went crazy!

They were very excited about getting the marrow out of the bones.

My girls LOVE Chicken bones! They will chew off the bone part to get to the marrow inside. They actually seem happier n have more energy on the nights I would give them a bone. But I can say they wouldnt give it back to me until they were done, they get a lil nutty over it

I divided up the turkey neck that was boiled with the giblets (no salt) for gravy stock at Thanksgiving (after pulling off the meat I could for the gravy.) They stripped every speck of meat off the bones and seemed to have a blast doing so. There was a lot of happy chirping going on Thanksgiving night.

I give chicken bone with a tiny bit of meet on for my gliders as a rare occasional treat. I only do it supervised, but I know many leave it in the cage overnight and no traces to be found the next morning.

They love it!

Does the chicken have to be boiled? can it be roasted? Can it only be the drumsticks or can it be other bones of the chicken ie: wings? Do you leave the meat on it or strip most of it off?

Sorry for the questions, but I'd love to give it as a treat & i'm sure my boys would love it too! lol!

I remove the skin and boil the chicken drumsticks, I strip off most of the meat since it's a treat and give it to them supervised. You can also bake the chicken. Remember not to use any spices or oil.

Your suggies will absolutely love it!

I use drumettes and strip off most of the meat. I do it as a fun, nutritional treat once every couple of months. They absolutely love it!

We cook a whole chicken in a slow cooker about once a month. We do this to make broths. We boil it quite a long time so the bones are brittle. My gliders get the scrapes (grissle and some bones, etc.) They LOVE it. Since we use organic chicken, I know it's good for them and since the bones are almost soft, they aren't dangerous. I wouldn't feel so confident if the bones were still hard. But that's just my experience.

That's a great idea! I'll bring out my pressure cooker and start doing this. Thanls for the idea!

Ok, not sure if this would be the same thing or not.

I try to keep my way of thinking "What would they do in the wild?"

Wild dogs will kill their meal, or find a carcass, and eat the entire thing, right? Well, my husband just cooked some meat for the dogs a couple of nights ago. The next morning, one had diarrhea so bad, she couldn't help but go in her kennel ~ and she needed a bath. The next day, the other dog vomitted ~ bones and all in his kennel! NO MORE for these guys!

With that being said, since our gliders aren't quite like they are in the "wild", has anyone ever fed bones and had any issues similar to what my dogs just experienced?

(I'm still not convinced that we should be giving bones to our gliders, even if they do love them.)
