Hi,
My glider's been having health problems for a while that have still gone undiagnosed by the vets. I know that she's not prolapsed now, but I'd like to know what it looks like just in case. She's actually been doing better from what I can tell, but sometimes I really fear she isn't. It's hard to tell, and this is my first one. Gliders are such fragile creatures.

Also, the last time I went to the vet he didn't test for a UTI, even though it wasnt the first time I had brought it up...she urinated while we were there, but it was as clear as water. I'm still not convinced though.

Can I give her diluted cranberry juice?? Is it too acidic? I know how it works in the bladders of humans, but gliders??

I would give her very diluted organic pure cranberry juice. Or could I giver her regular sweet cranberry juice, if I can even give it to her at all?

ALSO--could all this be stress related?? She's a happy glider who always has her ears up and purrs constantly, but she doesn't have a friend. I would love to get her one, but she's in an e-collar (due to tail biting) and I don't know how another glider would react or how she would react.

I also thought that if a glider was ill, it should be more or less separated from its mates.

I'm so confused!

I'm also leaving town this weekend (just a short trip and I plan on taking her with me) so I'd really love to know what to do before then.

Thanks so much!!

Starling and Zayda

well first of all i would take her or call a knowledgable vet. i think u can give cranberry juice but i would give dannon vanilla yogurt instead its very good for them especially if their stressed. u can always contact bourbons vet dr smith in clarksville tenn. 931 645 9890 your vet can even get advise from her.

What kind of medical problems has your glider had?
And how was it treated? This might help a little to know a little background.

Also...if you are taking your glider with you...check out the vet links in the area of where you are going and try to have some numbers with you just in case you should need vet care. Even if they are not exactly in the area of your stay....you would have phone numbers of knowledgable vets to consult with by phone should the occasion arise.

Prolasped rectum....there is a noticable bubble in the clocial area where normal fecal and urine come out. Straining and bouts of diarreah followed by severe constipation from either upper impaction or from protozoa infections.

Previous Post

I posted a while ago when Zayda's health problems began, however the topic seemed to fizzle out...

I'm going to be in the middle of nowhere...the closest "large" city would be Laredo, TX (I highly, highly doubt there are any vets there that would treat a sugar glider--in fact I doubt they'd even heard of one much less SEEN one ) All places listed are at least 3 hours from where I will be, but nevertheless, I will check!

I'm planning on taking her to the vet tomorrow for a follow up (again) and to get her e-collar changed. She's growing really fast!

Her diet has been good--still not eating bugs yet, but I keep trying. Fruit, veggies (mostly in babyfood form mixed with baby cereal), sometimes tofu...bml, and Rep-Cal (pink and white label).

Still see signs of straining and some loose stools, but they vary. I don't know what to do. She's been a real trooper so far, but if there's something really wrong that is going to go undiagnosed, I don't know how much more she can take.

So...could she be stressed? Can I get her a friend really soon?

Thanks,

Starling and Zayda

Forgot to add...

She's in a larger cage with more toys now and doesn't travel as much. She's been sleeping all day (except for her afternoon snacks) and gets up in the evenings to eat and play.

I also used to feed her cottage cheese--good source of protein--however, I think that was one of the things that gave her loose stools due to lactose intolerance, so I stopped. However, she's still having loose stools...

Maybe I should try cottage cheese/yogurt again?? She sure loves it...

Sterling,

Stick to the BML diet plan. Offering different foods is not helping. Not able to tell which ones are messing up her digestive tract.

No other foods...just the BML for now with a Small amount of fruit and veggies as she has got to learn to eat them. She is a baby...so expect her to eat the BML for now. You can offer it as a licky treat in place of other things. The BML has all the nutrients she needs at to proteins and fats and other essential elements. Bugs will come later when she is older.

Have you tried the vet clinic at TA&M by chance? They see a lot of gliders there and you should be able to get a vet with more experience there. I would have them do another saline slide on her stool as well as a urine. You can do the catch at home...just put your glider into a critter carrier and once she urinates ...draw it up in an insulin syringe and take with you to the vet. Perhaps...they can be more conslusive as to the problems with your glider.

When you go out of town...take the number of your vet to where he can be reached 24/7 just in case you have to resort to an inexperienced vet.

By the way... .10ml of Laxatone is not much. Antibiotics are very concentrated so...less amounts are given. When giving apple juice...dilute with 50%water. Apple juice for some gliders will cause diarreah. And remember...stick with a diet plan and for now....no other foods or treats till her tummy is well.

Thanks Judie! You've been a big help.

I'm still not quite sure if I'm going to go out of town yet, but we have a vet follow up tomorrow afternoon, so I will ask for that info anyway.

I will stick to the BML plan...she likes it a lot. She eats more of that than fruit/veggies.
Her stools have been consistantly harder the past couple of days. However, they still dont look quite like mouse droppings. They're longer and wider--kind of like minurature dog poo.
(Nice, huh... )

Is it okay if I add slight variations to the BML? Like adding small amounts of babyfoods (green beans, sweet potatoes, mixed fruit) so that she gets the vitamins she needs?

Or should I stick to plain BML and give her Nutri-glider?

Thanks again!

For now....stick with the BML. You can offer a little fruit and little bit of veggies. If her stool is starting to form that is a good sign.

Some gliders are lactose intolarent. Not many. But with your gliders having such a problem...I do not feel the yogurt is helping.

Today when you see your vet...ask for BenBac. It has a generic name but I am not good at generics. Anyway...it will help with adding new flora to her tummy. You will then mix it in her BML.

Good Luck with the vet today. Hang in there. She will get well. Just have to give her time to heal and perhaps adjust to her meds.

The vet appointment went well today. Finally the results from fecal tests and what-not.

Zayda has a bacterial infection (proteus vulgaris?--something like this) that is being treated. She's already been on antibiotics for ten days now and will be on them for another week or so.

She had normal poopies today at the vet and when we got home.

Her tail is getting better, but she still has a sore spot so the e-collar stays on indefinitely.

I asked the doctor about getting her something to replenish the flora in her intestines which he said was a "good idea" and told me to get some live-culture yogurt from the whole foods store. (live-culture? something like this...i'd recongnize it if i saw it...)

Her cloaca is still protruding a bit when she "goes"--after that it retracts and looks more or less normal.

Doc perscribed putting a small amount of preparation-H on her vent once a day.

So...scheduled a follow up for next week.

I *think* she's getting better. (crossing fingers)

Also, I think I am going to get her a little furball friend when she gets better.

Thanks for all your help!

The yogurt...with the live bacteria....is PLAIN. Do not get the flavored. Dannon I beleive does the "Live Culture" plain yogurt.

Remember ...be consistant with the diet thing. No changing or adding till she is back to normal. Greatfull the vet found the problem.

And thanks for the update! Such good news .

Dannon live bacteria--that's the stuff! I plan on getting some today.

Thanks for all your help, Judie. I'm so glad I was able to ask the vet the right questions to help my baby get better.

Her diet will remain consistant until we get a full bill of health from the vet.

She looked good this morning--no swelling and her bml was gone.

Thanks again for all your help!
