ok, I can't figure out how to add it here, but we just got necropsy results back on Wyatt, a 22 month old male sugar glider. The results were that he had a staff infection of his bladder and prostate that cut off the flow of his urethra.

The owner (I was the breeder) has a few questions that I cannot answer.

1. Could there have been any signs or symptoms she missed that could have saved him?
2. What could have caused it? I suggested sharp corners on the cage... but there must be other ways to contract it.
3. Is it contagious at all to his brother?
4. Could this have been in any way related to his neuter 11 months prior?... why would his prostate be effected?
5. Is there a way to protect/detect this in the future to prevent it happening to other gliders?
6. How long could this have been going on? Hours/days/weeks?
7. How often does this type of infection happen, and how often is it fatal?

The owner (I was the breeder) has a few questions that I cannot answer.

1. Could there have been any signs or symptoms she missed that could have saved him? Possibly. But, maybe not. Not all gliders show signs before the infection becomes unmanageable.
Signs of a bladder infection are strong odor, change in color of urine, decreased frequency of urination, decreased output with urination, lethargy, change in behavior and/or hissing while urinating.

2. What could have caused it? I suggested sharp corners on the cage... but there must be other ways to contract it. Staph bacteria are everywhere. This is a very common bacteria. Do you happen to know WHICH staph bacteria? It is likely that this glider had a decreased immune system.

3. Is it contagious at all to his brother? All bacteria are contagious. This does not mean that everyone exposed to it will develop an infectious response.

4. Could this have been in any way related to his neuter 11 months prior?. No way to tell. .. why would his prostate be effected? All systems in the body are related to every other system. Therefore, it is possible for an infection in the toe to travel to te heart and for an infection in the mouth to travel to the kidneys. This is true of all living things.

5. Is there a way to protect/detect this in the future to prevent it happening to other gliders? Watch for those above signs and symptoms and participate in the SUGAR Group's research so that in the future we can easily answer questions such as these.

6. How long could this have been going on? Hours/days/weeks? Yes, any of those. But, likely days or weeks.
7. How often does this type of infection happen, and how often is it fatal?

The SUGAR Group is tracking this very information through our incidence and census survey and our necropsy surveys. Last August, we reported that 13% of all necropsies were showing bacterial infection as cause of death. This is a significant number. It is vitally important for everyone to participate in this research. Every glider owner should complete the census and incidence survey every year. This information has not been tracked previously, but it is now. We are using this information in many ways, only one of which is to help answer questions just like the ones you have posed.

Please encourage your friend to complete the surveys and to submit her necropsy to the SUGAR group's research database.

You can view reports from the SUGAR Group and participate in our research via our website. http://www.sugargroup.org/ Reports are updated twice per year - both incidence and necropsy standings will be presented at the RRRoundup in March.
