Ok, I see quite a bit of discussion about one being better than the other lately, I would like to know why any of us feel stronger toward one or the other. I'll make a bullet list of my own thoughts on each here, and everyone else please chime in your own! Feel free to elaborate as much as you can. These are my current perceptions of the two procedures:

Pom-on
- aesthetically, glider looks more like an un-neutered male, not mistaken for females
- glider feels less like "something is missing" so less likely to SM
- usually done with a scalpel, closed with a spot of glue
- faster healing w/smaller inscision

Pom-off
- less chance of "botched" neuter - definitely removed testes!
- can be done scalpel or laser
- still a very short healing time
- closed with glue or stitches
- best choice for chronic Sm cases
- less mating drive afterward

So, what does everyone else think? I know some of us don't get a choice and must rely on what procedures our vets feel comfortable and willing to do, I am just curious if one is better than the other or if it really goes on a case-by-case basis.

I have had both procedures done and I really have no preference. I was a bit worried with an over groomer I had neutered, they sent that poor guy home with the ecollar around his waist.

Pom on can be done with a laser as well (the tube cut). The reason I like pom on is because the incision does not need stitches or glue (my vet does not use either). None of my boys were interested in their incision site at all, once they came out of anesthesia all the way.

My Bandit had a pom on and I was very happy with it. He was back home with me same day and by that evening, it was as if nothing ever happened!

My first vet did pom on and all went well with those 3 boys.

The last 5 I've had done was with my other vet and she does pom off and I have had no issues with those either.

Out of the 8 neuters (both ways), none has ever had to have an e-collar and ALL 8 have went back in with their families immediately after getting home.

My personal preference is pom off. But there is no particular reason why I like that procedure better, just do.

I did not know it could be done both ways! And how cool that you would not need stitches or glue - avoiding introducing a foreign substance!

You can see pics of both neuters on my site. Neutering information

I prefer pom-on. I've had to have two pom-off neuters done for medical issues. It took much longer for them to heal, which meant longer in the ecollar because stitches & glue had to be used.

I've had both procedures done, and have no real preference either way. I've "heard" that pom-on is better for the glider, but not really sure.

However, either method, my preference is to never use glue. The only time I've had an issue is when glue was used. The glider tried to clean the glue off, was afraid he would end up SMing, so he went into an e-collar. JMO
