#110750 - 06/16/06 12:45 PM Too much calcium

I read somewhere that too much calcium can produce the same symptoms as not enough calcium (like hind leg paralysis).

Does anyone know if this is accurate?

What too much calcium can do is cause a build up in the kidneys and other organs. Tiny crystals can form and if there are too many they can cause pain when the glider trys to pass them.

The only time a glider needs a higher dose of calcium is if they are recovering from HLP.

[:"green"]What you may have read is that too much calcium in the bloodstream can be a symptom of HLP... When my Pika had HLP, her calcium level in bloodstream was very elevated. This was because the calcium was not being absorbed into her bones where it was needed. As Lorna said, elevated calcium levels can result in kidney, liver and heart problems as well as others...
Hope this clears it up for you...

Since calcium is an ion used in nerve signal and muscle depolarization activation, too much or too little causes movement problems. In HLP, the thought is a chronic depletion by long-term inadequate diet causes bone loss of calcium as the body taps bone stones in order to maintain normal blood levels. Blood calcium level might be normal and often does not parallel the total body depletion evident from x-rays.

In a septic or critically sick one, the immediate blood levels can be low. High blood levels in the face of HLP makes one suspicious for lab error or misdiagnosis.

when a glider has a bacterial infection it can also cause the same symptoms as HLP, the infection creates a vicious circle not allowing the nutrients to be absorbed properly.

with hlp type symptoms, if it is sudden, then it is usually an injury (xrays) or a bacterial infection. (bacterial c&s)

if is slow and comes on slowly it is usually seen in minor changes for about 2 months.there is never a definitive answer to anything.. each symptom can possibly be a number of causes.

hlp symptoms can mean a numberous number of causes, so can crystals in the urine.

If your glider is showing symptoms of hlp, then a vet visit is in order with quite a few tests to determine exactly the cause.

Thank you! That clears things up! My gliders are nice and healthy, but I'd rather know more beforehand then find out information too late.
