Specimens Submitted: Submitted are the organs of one female sugar glider in two jars
Lab observation: Internal organs
Clinical History: 04/25/11: TSG's case
Glider found at bottom of cage with symptoms of lethargy, ears droopy, and seeming to have had a seizure. vet

DESCRIPTION:
The submission consists of heart, lung/larynx, GI tract, liver, pancreas, kidney, spleen and adrenal
glands.
Lung - The lung is distorted by the infiltration of abundant numbers of exudative leukocytes (neutrophils
and histiocytes) and some fibrinonecrotic debris that fill alveolar spaces and airways. Some amphophilic
to basophilic amorphous material (foreign body liquid) is present in the alveolar spaces. Multiple foci of
hemorrhage are found scattered through out the lung.
Larynx - There is necrosis with infiltration of exudative leukocytes found in the skeletal muscle about
the larynx.
Pancreas/mesentery - Necrosis with infiltration of exudative leukocytes distorts the pancreas and
adjacent mesentery. Mesenteric lymph nodes are hypercellular.
Small Intestine - There is necrosis of the mucosa and infiltration by exudative leukocytes.
Liver - The liver is massively infiltrated with leukocytes (lymphocytes, neutrophils and histiocytes).
Kidney - There are multifocal infiltration of leukocytes (lymphocytes, neutrophils and histiocytes) found
in the cortical interstitium.
Other tissues are not remarkable.
DIAGNOSIS:
Acute to subacute exudative bronchopneumonia.
Acute to subacute exudative necrotizing enteritis.
Acute to subacute exudative peritonitis and pancreatitis.
Acute to subacute exudative hepatitis.
Acute to subacute exudative interstitial nephritis.
COMMENT:
The histologic findings indicate the presence of a severe septic (bacterial) insult of the abdomen. Small
intestine, peritoneal surfaces, pancreas, kidney and liver are affected. The lesions in the lung are likely
secondary and may be the consequence of aspiration. The lesions found in the larynx could be due to
trauma associated with theraputic efforts to support alimentation. Together the lesions are interpreted to
be bacterial but opportunistic.

Veterinary Bulletin:
PIROPLASMOSIS TESTING AT TVMDL:
TVMDL can now test for Equine Piroplasmosis, a foreign animal disease caused by Babesia (Theileria) equi and Babesia caballi. For
an update on the status of this reportable disease in Texas, see the TAHC web site at: http://www.tahc.state.tx.us/ .
The tests "run days" will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with results normally in 2 days. Specimens must be in the Serology
Section by 11:00 AM on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. The required specimen is 1cc of clear serum for each test. The blood sample

must be drawn by and submitted to TVMDL by a licensed veterinarian. Due to the complexity of regulatory import requirements for
states in the US, by default TVMDL will run both tests when a "Piro" test request is received. Should you require only B. equi or B.
caballi, you must clearly define that on your submission form.
PIROPLASMOSIS TESTING LIMITATIONS - You MUST SPECIFY the reason for testing on your submission form.
TVMDL can test specimens for piroplasmosis ONLY for intra-state and inter-state purposes. Testing for international export
or for diagnostic cases with possible clinical symptoms, MUST be sent to NVSL.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ON PHENOBARB TESTING:
Phenobarbital drug concentrations are reduced when the sample is stored in separator tube for a prolonged period of time (>2 hrs). For
best results remove serum from clot or separator tube and send chilled or frozen immediately.

Q-Fever Testing by Phase I and Phase II antibody detection:
TVMDL College Station is pleased to offer the Q-Fever Phase I AND Q-Fever Phase II Complement Fixation Tests. Coxiella burnetii
(causative agent of Q-Fever) exists in 2 antigenic phases called Phase I and Phase II. Antibody to Phase II antigen generally indicates
a recent or early infection while antibody to Phase I antigen is indicative of previous or chronic infection. It is therefore recommended
to test for both Phase I and Phase II in clinical cases in order to determine the stage of infection.
The cost for EACH test is $12.00 / $18.00 (in-state/out-of-state) per animal. If not indicated at time of request, only the Phase I test
will be performed.
